We wish to thank our generous angels whose donations have helped us to continue to grow as a ministry of The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration since Without the hard work of our volunteers and supporters we would not exist. From ticket sales, set and stage building to our volunteers both on stage and off who dress us, feed us, collect and even hand us our props, they also sell tickets and advertise our shows. The gigantic undertaking of producing and performing our shows is made worthwhile as these folks are also our audiences and friends. In the past few years the FTC has grown in a way that has made it possible for us to give back to our community by performing for local schools as well as our own Parish School and assisting in other ministries of Transfiguration. 3 The Big Broadcast For 30+ years of the 20th century, radio was THE popular mass medium, offering millions of listeners an imaginative audio buffet of comedies, dramas, news, music and more. Until television arrived in the 1950s and relegated it to the diminished role of music and talk that it offers today, radio was King. And the shows that aired then still echo in popular culture today. Tonight s Big Broadcast recreates five classic shows from Radio s Golden Age, each highlighting a different radio genre. Each show spawned subsequent television and/or movie adaptations, in many cases right up to the present day. Taken together, these shows and their characters add up to almost 400 years of pop culture... The radio series was introduced in 1941, and in our studio tonight, you will believe a man can fly. THE GUIDING LIGHT This, the longest-ever running television soap opera, started life as the radio drama of a smalltown preacher in Although the cast and storyline evolved, The Guiding Light continued to be heard -- and beginning in 1952, seen -- until just five years ago. THE SHADOW The perfect hero for radio also appeared in decades of pulp magazines, several motion picture serials, a TV pilot, and a big budget 1994 movie with Alec Baldwin, with reboots undoubtably yet to come. But can he conquer Death by Television this evening? Only the Shadow Knows... BURNS & ALLEN George Burns had the longest comic career in show business, from child vaudevillian to an appearance at 98 years old in the 1994 film Radioland Murders. His real-life wife and scatterbrained comedic partner Gracie Allen was an essential part of the act from vaudeville to TV. THE LONE RANGER America s best-loved western hero was an instant hit on radio right from his 1933 beginning, and later for generations of kids raised on TV reruns. The recent big-budget movie epic with Johnny Depp was just the latest retelling of legendary masked man s story.

Tonight s broadast is produced by The Generic Radio Workshop, a loose-knit group of radio artists who have been performing vintage radio shows in North Texas for just about longer than the Golden Age of Radio existed in the first place. Associated for years with the National Museum of Commuications in Dallas, the GRW performed our first radio recreations back in 1981, and have kept going at intervals just for the art and the fun of it. The Workshop s website, genericradio.com, serves as the Internet s original and largest library of old-time radio scripts. Audio theatre groups literally from across the globe visit the GRW website to find material for their upcoming productions, and share scripts that they have produced with others.
