1 Blackspace CONTACT Tarish Pipkins 208 W Markham Ave. Durham NC Project Budget Grant Request $6,000 $3,000 NA PAST GRANTS AWARDED jeghetto@gmail.com theblackspace.org 501 (c)(3): African American Dance Ensemble 5P1N0K10 5P1N0K10 (Spinokio) is a Hip Hop infused, multi-medium, sci-fi puppet show about about a robot-boy who wants to become human. In the distant future, when robots are used for war, engineer Jeghetto built 5P1N0K10 an android who fights for humanity through music and dance. VIDEO SAMPLE Title: 5P1N0K10 filmed December 30th, Artists: Tarish "Jeghetto" Pipkins - director, writer, puppet master. Brentton Harrison - puppet captain, dancers. Mashallah Salaam - youth puppeter. Pierce Freelon - writer, narrator, musician. Description: These clips are from our first time workshopping scenes from 5P1N0K10 in front of a live audience. This 30-minute sneak-peek of the work-in-progress production debuted last holiday season in front of an intimate audience at the Nasher Museum of Art. WORKSHOP
2 Project Description The project is an Afrofuturistic puppet theatre drama called 5P1N0K10. The title is a spin on Carlo Collodi s Classic Pinocchio, however, the main character in 5P1N0K10 is a android. The story is set in a distant, post-apocalyptic future, after a world war has devastated Earth. The creator of our protagonist is an engineer named Jeghetto. 5P1N0K10 is an Artificial Intelligence who fights for humanity through b-boying and hip hop, in an attempt to become a human like his father. The performance, which includes hand-crafted puppets by Tarish Jeghetto Pipkins and projections and a live score written by Hir-O and Pierce Freelon, is a mix between the sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix, and the Hip Hopinfused broadway sensation Hamilton. 5P1N0K10 is an ambitious and experimental multi-media puppet show, which incorporates bunraku, marionette and shadow puppetry; as well as video, spoken word, dance, African drumming and DJing. The puppets are a mix of robots and humans that stand between 3 and 4 feet tall. Rod puppets and marionettes will be manipulated by between 3-and-4 puppeteers. The shadow puppets will be projected upon a scrim, or projector screen. The puppets are constructed from recycled materials such as wood, pvc pipe and cardboard. We are also experimenting with adding special effects to the show, with strobe lighting and a fog machine. The video aspect of the production includes stop-motion and green screen effects to portray scenes and backgrounds as well as video clips that assist the storyline. The Shadow puppetry will be both filmed, and projected live. All of the videos will be in black and white. The story will be narrated by a spoken word artist, while a DJ and African drummer score the performance live. 5P1N0K10 is being produced by Blackspace Planet Puppet and fiscally sponsored by the African American Dance Ensemble, a 501c3 organization, which advocates African-centered art projects, based in Durham North Carolina.

4 Biography Tarish Jeghetto Pipkins Tarish Pipkins has built and breathed life into his puppets for 13 years through his mission statement: promoting ONENESS through the magic of puppetry. He has built puppets for, and performed alongside multi-platinum Hip Hop artists Missy Elliot and Pharrell on the television show The Voice. His puppetry has also appeared in their music videos, garnering over 40 million views. His work has also appeared in commercials for Amazon featuring Alec Baldwin. Born in a small steel mill town in south Pittsburgh, PA, Jeghetto is a self taught artist who has been creating art from a very young age. As a teenager, he moved to the East Side of Pittsburgh and graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School. In the late 90 s Tarish joined the BridgeSpotters Collective and became known for his live paintings and poetry. He moved to North Carolina in 2005 where he launched his career in Puppetry. There, he fine-tuned his skills by doing street performances with his puppets. In 2008 he started working with Paperhand Puppet Intervention and using his puppetry to teach children with special needs at Just Right Academy. Pipkins is a renown puppeteer, visual artist, playwright and educator. Pierce Freelon Pierce Freelon is a musician and professor. He is the creator of Blackspace - a digital makerspace based in Durham, North Carolina; and the co-founder of the Emmy-award winning PBS web-series Beat Making Lab. He has taught in the Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies at UNC Chapel Hill, and is the front-man of the jazz/hip hop quartet The Beast.
5 Organization Description Blackspace is a hub for Afrofuturism, digital media and social entrepreneurship based in Durham, North Carolina.
