1 Mustard Seed School Summer Reading List for Students Entering Fourth & Fifth Grade in A Matter of Perspective Thinking Ahead to Next Year: What would it be like to see through another s eyes? How am I perceived by others? How does the place where I stand affect the way I see the future and the past? In history, what is the story of the Colonist? The Loyalist? The Patriot? The North? The South? The Farmer? The Merchant? The Slave? The Abolitionist? What did they really see? What do I see happening now? Next year, students will explore and contemplate the human perspectives that have been lived and expressed throughout the history of New Jersey and the U.S. We will consider the insights of Native Americans, British, French, Spanish, Mexican and Colonial Americans and we will study the views of explorers, colonists, minutemen, pioneers, more. The view of both the land and the city will come together often. Sometimes the people we study will see eye to eye and sometimes they will not. Throughout the term, we will become familiar with the biographies of notable Native Americans, European Americans and African Americans. We will record events on timelines and maps, examine the relationship between natural resources and human migration, and delve into the nature of human decisions in history. Through biblical texts and other resources, we will also become acquainted with the religious, cultural and social settings of each age that our state and country have passed through, especially noticing people in history who were called to lives of faith and courage at critical moments. Summer Reading! As always, one of the summer reads is required. Students entering Grades 4 & 5 will all read The BFG by Roald Dahl. In the Clonkers Home for Girls, young Sophie can't sleep, and she discovers a giant, cloaked man blowing fairy dust into bedrooms. When the ominous figure spies Sophie, he snatches her and takes her to his lair, where she's sure she will be killed. Instead, she's treated to a scrodcumber, a drink that makes her whiz pop, and a song from the big and cuddly Big Friendly Giant (or BFG). The BFG adopts Sophie and takes her on an adventure through the fearsome world of giant country, the ethereal dream way, and his dream cave, where he stores the dreams he's captured. There, he mixes together bits of dreams and delivers the sweetest ones to children around the world. Loveable BFG gives the very serious Sophie a welcome dose of silliness, and the opportunity to dream. But when the other giants threaten to eat children, Sophie and the BFG hatch a plan to save them with the help of the Queen of England. And believe it or not, it just gets more surreal from there. Along the way, the BFG and Sophie learn about courage, loyalty, and love. (From commonsensemedial.org ) In addition, your child should choose three books, each from a different genre, from the list below. Once the books are ready, your review to the homeroom teachers: mmcallihan@mustardseedschool.org, achoi@mustardseedschool.org, and eemma@mustardseedschool.org. Your review will be posted on the class blog for other classmates to read! Maybe someone will read your book based on your review. Parents
