1 August Book Report: Realistic Fiction Book Report Due: Realistic Fiction refers to books that are made up(fiction) but could, possibly, happen. Be careful not to choose a book that has another element to it that overrides the genre of realistic fiction. For example, a novel that takes place during the Civil War would be classified as historical fiction because it takes place during a historical time period. Or, a novel in which there is a crime or mystery to be solved would be classified as a mystery rather than realistic fiction. Due to studentsʼ varying reading abilities, size of text, etc. I am hesitant to set a required number of pages. The book should be within studentʼs ZPD level. I do require that each student have his or her book approved by me by. For each day a student does not get his or her book approved by me he or she loses 5 points off of his or her final grade for the book report. If a student selects a book from the public library, he or she will get 5 extra credit points. " Upon completion of the novel, you will write a report meeting the following guidelines: First Paragraph:" " Summary of the book Second Paragraph:" " An explanation of characteristics in this book that proves its genre Third paragraph:" " Write a review of the book - be sure to support your review with specific " " " " examples from the book. It was funny is NOT specific. Rather, The " " " " main character, Johnny, was always pulling tricks on his sister. One time " " " " he put a tack on her chair... is much more specific. End of Book Project " See the back for details This report can be hand written, typed, or created in a powerpoint presentation. If you choose the powerpoint presentation, you must it to me by the due date and you may show it to the class. Students will be taking an AR test on their book on August 31. That score will be recorded as a grade in addition to the grade for the report they turn in. Some suggestions include: *Please note that these are some suggestions of popular fifth grade books. Which ever book you choose, it should be in your ZPD range. Title" " " " " " " Author My Side of the Mountain" " " " Jean Craighead George Joey Pigza Loses Control" " " " Jack Gantos Island (this is a 3 book series)" " " Gordon Korman On My Honor"" " " " " Marion Dane Bauer Angela and Diabola"" " " " Lynne Reid Banks Dear Mr. Henshaw" " " " " Beverly Clearly" " " " " The Landry News" " " " " Andrew Clements Project Mulberry" " " " " Linda Sue Park

2 September Book Report: Nonfiction Nonfiction refers to books that tells about people, places, or things that are real. These books will give you facts and information about the main topic. Often times nonfiction books will also have real pictures, maps, diagrams, or other pertinent illustrations. There are many subcategories of nonfiction (biographies, autobiographies, etc) but I want you to choose a book about something that interests you. BOOK REPORT DUE DATE: Due to studentsʼ varying reading abilities, size of text, etc. I am hesitant to set a required number of pages. I do require that each student have their book approved by me by. For each day students do not get their book approved by me they lose 5 points off of their final grade for the book report. Students must read their book at least 4 times per week. Each time he or she reads, s/he must write about what s/he read by noting the main idea and at least three supporting details for that main idea. I will expect a minimum of twelve entries in his or her book. Upon completion of the book, your child will create a photo album that captures 4-6 main ideas of your book. Under each photo, you will write a paragraph summarizing the main idea and supporting details. Be sure that each paragraph has a topic sentence, detail sentences, and a closing sentence. Lastly, be sure that you use your own words!!! On the back of your photo album, write an explanation of the characteristics in the book that prove its genre. Some suggestions include: *Please note that these are some suggestions of popular fifth grade books. That does not mean that it will be at the readability level of your child. Have them read a page aloud to you. Follow the rule of five. If, at the end of one page your child struggled through five or more words it is too difficult. Also, be sure that he or she can summarize what he or she read - if not, that may be another clue that the book is too difficult. TITLE!!!!!!!!! 3 September/October Book Report: Historical Fiction Book Report Due:" Historical Fiction refers to books that are made up but take place in the past, usually during a significant era in our nation or worldʼs history. For example, My Brother Sam is Dead is a story about two brothers in the Revolutionary War. The fact that this story is made up and takes place during the Revolutionary War makes it historical fiction. Be careful that you select a FICTIONAL book. Upon completion of the novel, your child will write a report meeting the following guidelines: First Paragraph:" " Summary of the book. This is NOT to be a lengthy retelling of all the " " " " events of the book. Rather, it should identify the major components of a " " " " narrative and plot. This includes, characters, setting, problem, climax, and " " " " resolution. You should also include the point of view from which the story " " " " is being told " (i.e. first person, third person limited, third person " " " " omniscient) Second Paragraph:" " A summary about the time period in which this story takes place and how " " " " that time period impacts the plot. You should also include timeline of the " " " " period during which this book takes place. That timeline should include " " " " 4-6 events of that period. " " " Third paragraph:" " This paragraph should explain why your book is historical fiction. It should " " " " also address how historical fiction is different from realistic fiction as well " " " " as how it is different from a nonfiction book that would give information " " " " about this particular time period. Fourth Paragraph:" " Write a review of the book. Be sure to support your review with specific " " " " examples from the text. I learned a lot is NOT specific. Rather, I " " " " learned how people have been studying the solar system for years. For " " " " example, did you know that many of the planets were named by ancient " " " " Greeks? is specific. 5 December Book Report: Biography or Autobiography Book Report Due: Biographies and Autobiographies are books that are written about real people (dead or alive). They tell the stories of someoneʼs life and his or her accomplishments in life. An autobiography was written by the person the book is about. Autobiographies are usually written in first person point of view. But a biography is written by someone else. For example, if I wrote a story about Mrs. Holt, it is an autobiography. But if Mrs. Frausel wrote a story about Mrs. Holt it would then be a biography. You may choose either a biography or autobiography about anyone you find interesting. Be sure it is appropriate for school and that it is someone that interests you. Due to studentsʼ varying reading abilities, size of text, etc. I am hesitant to set a required number of pages. I do require that each student have their book approved by me by. For each day students do not get their book approved by me they lose 5 points off of their final grade for the book report. Upon completion of the novel, you will write a report meeting the following guidelines: First Paragraph:" " Summary of the book. Give an overview of the personʼs life. Write about " " " " their childhood, schooling, why he or she was famous and struggles he or " " " " she had along the way. If applicable, write about your personʼs death as " " " " well and any long lasting impact on the world. Second Paragraph:" " Write about 3-5 character traits you identified in the person you read " " " " about. Be sure to include specific examples from the text that " " " " demonstrates these traits. Write about how these traits influenced " " " " decisions the person made throughout his or her life. Third paragraph:" " Write an explanation of the bookʼs genre and use specific examples as to " " " " " how you know the bookʼs genre. LASTLY: You will be expected to give a 3-5 presentation about the person you read read about. You will give the presentation as though you are that person and you are running for president (costumes are encouraged but optional). Be sure to create a visual aid for your presentation.

6 November Book Report: Mystery Book Report Due: A mystery usually has a crime to be solved. That crime can be a murder or some other mysterious event. The central character must be the detective following clues who ultimately solves the crime. Mysteries have many suspects for the crime, each of whom has a motive and a reasonable opportunity for committing the crime. Due to studentsʼ varying reading abilities, size of text, etc. I am hesitant to set a required number of pages. I do require that each student have their book approved by me by. For each day students do not get their book approved by me they lose 5 points off of their final grade for the book report. " " " " In addition, write about any red herrings presented within the book. Third paragraph:" " Write a review of the book. Be sure to support your review with specific " " " " examples from the text. I learned a lot is NOT specific. Rather, I " " " " learned how people have been studying the solar system for years. Fantasies usually take place in a nonexistent and unreal world and have incredible and unreal characters. Dragons, unicorns, or whangdoodles are all examples of characters that might be found in a fantasy. Due to studentsʼ varying reading abilities, size of text, etc. I am hesitant to. For each day students do not get their book approved by me they lose 5 points off of their final grade for the book report. Final Project:! Upon completion of the book you will create a cereal box book report. It should include the following: " Front Cover:" " The title of your book, author, your name and a picture " Back:" " " A trivia game with questions about your book " " " " A plot chart outlining the: characters, setting, problem, rising action, " " " " climax, falling action, resolution " Side:" " " An evaluation of the book - imagine you are a book critic.
