4 Dear Parents/Guardians: Because reading is a fundamental part of everyone s education, we are offering summer reading lists for rising grades 6-8. We hope that your child will both enjoy and benefit from a summer of reading. Included with each list you will find the following information: author s name, book title, book genre, and Lexile level. This information is provided to help you and your student make the best possible choice when it comes to summer reading books. Lexile Levels In the Fall of 2007, each middle school was given the opportunity to test the reading level of the students using the Gates MacGinitie Reading Test. This test provided a grade-level reading score, which can be used to estimate the Lexile Reading Level for the student. The Lexile Framework for Reading is a scientific approach to reading measurement that matches readers to text. The Lexile Framework measures both reader ability and text difficulty on the same scale, called the Lexile Scale. This approach allows educators (and parents) to manage reading comprehension and encourage reader progress ( The Lexile scale is provided for your reference. Lexile Scale Grade Level Lexile Ranking Grade Level Lexile Ranking Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Grade Post High School Assignment We recommend students read two to five books during the summer. To gain maximum educational benefit, we suggest that your student record information on the reading log that follows and also write a brief response to one of the questions for each book read. If your student is enrolled in an advanced level English class, we suggest that he/she read at least three books from the rising grade level and complete three response questions. At the beginning of the school year, the log and responses should be given to your student s English teacher. We also hope that your student will take advantage of Henrico County Public Library s summer reading program. This year, the public library is offering students the opportunity to record their summer reading books online at the YA Summer Reading Club. Please visit for more information. Thank you for your support of the summer reading program. Marilyn Royal, Director of Middle School Education Ann Marie Seely, Educational Specialist English/Language Arts/Reading
5 Summer Reading Assignment Response Questions: For each book read, write a well developed paragraph that answers one of the following choices. Turn your response(s) and your reading log in to your new English teacher. 1. Which event would you change? What would happen in your revision? 2. Which character was your favorite? Compare this character to you or to one of your friends. 3. Why did you choose to read a nonfiction book? What facts did you learn? List and briefly explain. 4. What would you say to the author of this book? (Critique two details of this book.) 5. Why did you choose a book that was not on the list? Defend your response with details from your book. Summer Reading Log Date Book Title Author Comments about the Book I acknowledge that my child has fulfilled the HCPS summer reading activities by reading and completing the assignment for the books listed above.
