Mississippi Current September 2012 Lt. Rose Compton Captain s Log September was a particularly busy month for the members of the Mighty M., with summer coming to an end and fall fast approaching. For the next two months, we are up to our nacelles in projects and missions and will be very occupied and focused. It should prove to be an active, but fun fall season. The temperatures in the mid-west finally returned to a normal range and we got a bit of a break from the high temps, humidity and drought. We still need more rain, but don t have much say in that matter. We continue to seek out the one with the environmental controls for this area. Our ship hosted our first every TREKnic and I think it was successful. TREKnic is a star trek themed pot luck picnic for area ships, which in previous years, had been hosted by the USS Lobo Moline. This year we added more of a regional flare and had a great turn-out. Photos and details can be found in the REC-DEC section. This month s edition of the NL is short on articles, so that we could share several photos with you. Words of Wisdom We have them just where they want us. Captain Kirk, Star Trek
REC-DEC TREKnic Lt. Rose Compton Saturday, September 8 th was the epitome of a beautiful late summer day. The temps in the morning hours dipped to a chilling 51 degrees and the afternoon high, with sunny skies was 75 degrees, with a breeze. A perfect day for a picnic in the park. Star Trek fans and SFCQ1 members from as far west as Des Moines to as far east as Chicago joined together to celebrate the 46 th Anniversary of Star Trek, to share a meal and to enjoy each other s company. A total of six ships and Starbase 03 were represented by 20 members. From USS Riverside (SFI); Aaron, Michelle and baby Trent Clark attended. SFCQ1 had several delegates Coy Turner from USS Gorkon, Indiana and USS Lobo Moline representatives was its ambassadors, Liz Robinson and Brad Smith, Captain Bill Van Brunt and senior officer Mike House. Alan and Heidee Thompson represented Thompson Ship Yards and Tom Webster and Pamela Covell; along with their K-9 units, Fozzie Bear and Duke; arrived for USS Iowa. Commodore James Olsen with members Trish Pelarenos and Marc Domask covered Starbase 03. The host, USS Mighty Mississippi was represented by Rose Compton, Ed Ciccarone and Les Pullman, as well as their guests Alex and Katie Haugen.
TREKnic 2012 Our table centerpieces were provided by Thompson Ship Yard s Alan and Heidee Thompson. We applaud the effort they put in making these. Our grill master was Coy Turner of the USS Gorkon, with assistance from Trish Pelarenos, SB 03, and USS Mighty Mississippi s Les Pullman and Ed Ciccarone giving pointers and keeping the conversation flowing. Along with burgers and franks, the menu also included gagh, owon eggs, cellular peptide cake, graviton bombs, dragon fruit and so many more dishes than we can possibly name here. Along with a meal, events for the day included a scavenger hunt, starship dirty deeds, and a trivia challenge. The scavenger hunt was won by the team of Coy Turner and Alex and Katie Haugen. Second place went to the team of Les Pullman and Alan and Heidee (Gypsy) Thompson. Starship Dirty Deeds was a series of 5 challenges with first place going to Alex Haugen, second was Pamela Covell, with Brad Smith and Coy Turner tying for third. The Trivia challenge was won by Tom Webster with second place going to Coy Turner. <<<< Alan Thompson working on warp cores with Les Pullman, Heidee Thompson and Ed Ciccarone in background. The objective was to toss as many coins as possible into a shot glass, buried in a pan of water. >>>> Coy Turner chatting with SB 03 Commodore James Olsen
>>>>> Dressing quickly during a Red Alert! Heidee Thompson, Coy Turner, Alex Haugen, Tom Webster and Brad Smith. The objective was to collect the coin in the toe of each hose, using only their hands. <<<< Capturing nannites are Pamela Covell with assistance from Katie Haugen. The objective was to collect marbles with a spoon, one at a time and transfer them to another container, while blindfolded. A meal worthy of Admirals!!! Trish Pelarenos collecting samples for the Scavenger Hunt. Pamela Covell and her babies; Fozzie Bear and Duke.
<<<< Alan Thompson (center) checking out his cell reception, with L-R: Mike House, Ed Ciccarone, Heidee Thompson and Aaron Clark Setting the table Ambassador Liz Robinson with Heidee Thompson and Mike House. >>>> <<<< Trish Pelarones, Marc Domask and Brad Smith. >>>> Pamela Covell and Tom Webster meeting Alex and Katie Haugen <<<< Les Pullman III with Bill Van Brunt, discussing map legend lengths.
Rose Compton playing with fire! As the Commanding Officer of this fine vessel, I d like to thank everyone who attended TREKnic. Those that traveled to attend, or brought a dish to share, participated in the events/games and helped behind the scenes. Ensign Les Pullman and Lt. Jg. Ed Ciccarone of USS Mighty Mississippi, THANK YOU, for backing your Captain and being a sounding board for ideas as well as helping to pull it all together. I d also like to thank USS Lobo Moline, Sr. Officer Mike House for arriving early to help with the set up and returning later and hanging until the end to finish with clean-up. Thanks to Commodore James Olson and Cpt. William Van Brunt for also arriving early to help with set-up. A special Thank You goes out to Lt. Col. Coy Turner for manning the cook- fires and to Thompson Ship Yards for supplying our table centerpieces. As a team, we made it work. Comments can be sent to: USS.MightyMississippi@gmail.com
