2 My Mum was a science teacher and I have always thought that science was just something that girls did. Dr Jennifer Rowntree Senior lecturer School of Science and the Environment I love being a biologist as there are so many amazing things to learn about the natural world. Being able to play even a small part in the preservation of that wonder is what motivates me.

4 I became a scientist because I never wanted to stop learning about the world around me. Dr Emma Coulthard Lecturer School of Science and the Environment I ve often found that as a woman you have to work harder to be acknowledged for what you do, but then that also means you can surprise people and change their perceptions. That s a great feeling.

5 "When I was younger I thought I d get into research in order to protect the natural world. More recently I realised that even if we hadn t pushed the environment into its precarious state, I d would be a biologist anyway, because living things are just too cool!" 6 I was obsessed with dinosaurs when I was a little kid, but forgot all about them as a teenager. It was only when I went to university that I rediscovered my interest in fossils. Dr Charlotte Brassey BBSRC Future Leader Fellow School of Science and the Environment At every step, I ve made the career choice that excites me the most. I am a scientist because every day is different. I can t imagine a job more diverse and rewarding than this.

7 Kirsty Atkinson, BSc (Hons), MSc I pinch myself every day because my career in Molecular Biology is so enjoyable. Knowing that the wide-ranging work I am involved in can make a difference, from Forensic DNA Profiling to Conservation Genetics, fills me with pride

8 As a child I was feral - spending all my spare time outside collecting things. Around the age of six, a friend told my mum that 'I was the best grasshopper catcher around' - I'm still proud of that accolade. I am happiest in the field, butterfly net and binoculars at the ready, hopefully enthusing students with my passion for the natural world. Dr Lesley Lace Senior Lecturer

9 How nature works has fascinated me from a young age when I would dig in the garden with my grandparents Emily Schofield PhD student and The James Hutton Institute I love how creative science can be taking a problem and finding a new way to look at it

10 Dr Sarah Whild Senior Lecturer in Plant Ecology This is my laboratory thigh waders are obligatory! Whether I m researching water plant assemblages or teaching students plant identification out in the field, every day I feel as if I have the best job in the world. Even when it s raining

12 I ve always loved landscapes why and how they formed, how they have changed over thousands of years, and how people have created what we see today. As a Geographer I find this endlessly interesting find your passion and keep asking questions! 13 Dr Hannah Mossman Lecturer in Ecology I ve always loved the coast since spending childhood holidays there. Now I work to restore coastal habitats and protect them from the threats of sea level rise.
