2 Preciado 2 Outline I. Introduction A. Hypnosis is the induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction. Despite the loss of voluntary action, a person under hypnosis remains in one-hundred percent control. One would have thought otherwise due to media s portrayal of hypnotism including so called stage hypnotists. In fact, hypnotherapy is used world-wide to treat ailments and even to improve abilities such as memory, focus, and awareness. In the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the D.H.C. states The principle of sleep-teaching, or hypnopaedia, had been discovered (25). The D.H.C. was referring to an improved form of modern day hypnosis which consists of repeating audio statements to children as they sleep. These statements are permanently engraved into their mind and become a part of how they think. Research has shown that positive effects can result from hypnopaedia used in today s world. II. Body A.
