4 Reader Reactions A double-entry journal is below. Excerpts from this week s cover story are in the left-hand column. In the My Ideas column, write your thoughts, reactions, and inferences based on the text. We did the first one as an example. In the last row, choose another passage in the article, then write your reaction to it. From the Article It kind of takes stress off my shoulders, says Grady. I don t have to worry as much about getting sick and falling behind in school. (paragraph 4) In the classroom, if one kid is sick, if there s a sniffle, a sneeze, a cough, Grady will get sick within a couple days, says Grady s mother, Tami. (paragraph 6) My Ideas Active Reading Common Core RI.4.1 I can infer that Grady felt overwhelmed by the amount of schoolwork he missed when he was sick. It can be difficult to make up work when you miss a lesson in class. Tami estimates that Grady missed about 45 days of school each year from kindergarten through third grade. (paragraph 7) For Grady, learning to control the robot from home took some getting used to. Sometimes, he would bump it into desks, or it would topple over. (paragraph 8) They just think it s me, says Grady. They treat it like it s a normal person. (paragraph 13)

But she is most famously represented by the Statue of Liberty. The timeline shows some important dates in the history of the statue. Study the timeline, then answer the questions Statue of Liberty Timeline 1871: A French sculptor named Frédéric Bartholdi travels to New York. He chooses a site for a statue that will honor the friendship between France and the U.S. He picks a spot in New York Harbor called Bedloe s Island (later renamed Liberty Island). 1876: Bartholdi begins construction of the statue in France. 1884: The statue is completed. The French officially present it to the U.S. ambassador in Paris on July : The statue is separated into 350 pieces and shipped to the U.S. 1886: The statue is reassembled in New York. It is dedicated on October : During World War II, the statue s torch is no longer lit up at night to prevent enemy aircraft from seeing it. 1984: The statue is closed for renovations to prepare for its 100th anniversary two years later. 2001: The statue and Liberty Island, which sit across the harbor from the World Trade Center, are closed after the terrorist attacks on September : The statue is reopened to the public, but the crown remains closed for another five years. 2012: Flooding from Hurricane Sandy covers 75 percent of Liberty Island, causing major damage. The island is closed for repairs. 2013: The statue and Liberty Island reopen to the public. 1. Who was the sculptor who chose the site and constructed the statue? 2. Why was the statue created? 3. Once construction began, how long did it take to complete the statue? 4. Why do you think the French chose to officially present the statue to the U.S. on July 4? 5. In what year was the Statue of Liberty s 100th anniversary? 6. List three reasons the statue has been closed in the past 40 years.
