1 THE LAIRD CUP COMES TO SOUTH MUNSTER! Hugh Twomey and Brian O'Sullivan (Cork Bridge Club) were worthy winners of the Laird Cup at the National Intermediate A Pairs' Finals in Athlone. In the Davidson Cup (National Masters Pairs' Final) Mary O'Brien and Carmel McSweeney (Macroom Bridge Club) won the 2 nd Session and Tom McCarthy and John Russell Cork Bridge Club came overall. REGIONAL NOVICE COMPETITION MANDEVILLE NOVICES COME UP TRUMPS Noel Bradfield, Regional President Rose Tobin, John Lyons, Tournament Organiser Eleanor Hipwell 23 pairs from nine Bridge Clubs across the South Munster Region competed for the Novice Trophy. There was a great atmosphere and all the players thoroughly enjoyed the event, and vowed to return. Novices are the life blood of our clubs and it was marvellous to see the level of interest and enjoyment. Carmel Connolly acted as Tournament Director and, as usual, did a superb job. Thank you Carmel Regional President, Rose Tobin was on hand to present the winners with their prizes and to utter those words of encouragement and praise to winners and the runners up alike. 2 WHITE HOUSE JUNIOR INTERNATIONALS TO The 10th White House Junior Internationals (Het Witte Huis), Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 26 teams from 19 European countries, plus teams from China and Japan will play a three day (17 matches) round robin, producing four semi-finalists who will play a 42 board KO-match on Thursday 3 April resulting in the final on Friday 4 April. From every session a match will be broadcasted live on BridgeBaseOnline. It was carried off in Curraghcrowley style - good Bridge, good Food and great craic. There was enough talent to run their own Voice of Ireland or talent show, but I won t give any secrets away, (not even the FF Ard Fheis which was held in close proximity) took from it. The organising committee did an excellent job. Club Secretary Margaret O Flynn to be commended on choice of venue, and the extra little touches that add to the occasion, Jerry O Flynn double jobbed acting MC and Tournament Director. Who knows what will be next - it is a long year lots of events to come.
