1 NEWS FROM THE EDITOR Hi All Thank you for the feedback and advice I have received to date with regard to the newsletter. Our attendance has been down lately due to some members being away interstate and others have succumbed to the flu that is rife in the community at present. We hope the later make a speedy recovery and are back playing bridge soon. Well the Territory Gold is over for another year and I am pleased our PBC team accepted the Challenge and received bottles of wine for coming Second in the Restricted Pairs with less than 300 Master points. Our team comprised of Mike Butler, Connie Christrup, Mary Madden, Carolyn Cooper and me who substituted at short notice for one session. I experienced first-hand by filling in as a substitute on the Thursday afternoon session what it s like to play in such an impressive competition. Initially it was a bit daunting playing 30 boards against good players especially as Carolyn and I hadn t teamed up before but once the nerves had settled a bit, I quite enjoy the challenge. I made a few errors but tried not to let it faze me and just moved onto the next board. While it may not be everyone s cup of tea, I think it was worth having a go after all, it s only a game. Perhaps more people may consider having a go next time it comes around. If you have any interesting ideas or articles send them via s to me prior to the end of the month. Looking forward to your feedback. Regards Sue Duffield suejduff@hotmail.com CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of this event, Greg Nicholson & Jean Barbour FOTHE C COCO CONGRATULATIONS to Handicap Winners: Rosika Grahl, Mary Toner, Pat Brisch & Shaz Winders

2 Territory Gold Bridge Festival Dates: August st DoubleTree by Hilton, Esplanade (ie the old Beaufort) was a hive of cerebral activity during the last week in August. Over 150 players from most States and New Zealand participated in 3 bridge events. We even had 2 players from Poland who came especially for Territory Gold. There were 48 NT players who did the Territory proud. Directors Matthew and Ed impressed us with their calm manner and seemingly effortless directing and organisation. They ensured a pleasant atmosphere and friendly Festival. Unfortunately (for us) interstate visitors took the major prizes but Territory players walked away with Restricted prizes and much of the wine and chocolates. I was amused by one well regarded interstate pair who, in the Swiss pairs, took over 5 minutes and more than their share of the bidding slip to bid to the inferior contract of 6 Spades (which only makes when the opponents trumps are 3-3) when 6 Diamonds is cold. So, don t be overawed by these southerners who pretend to know what they are doing! Next year Territory Gold is in Alice Springs for me this is great as Eileen Boocock does the organizing and there are plenty of special places in the Centre to visit. She has arranged for great accommodation options even better when booked this year see our website ( for details and contacts. Pam Nunn CONGRATULATIONS to our Palmerston team, Second Place in the Restricted Pairs section with less than 300 master points Team comprised of Mike Butler, Connie Christrop, Mary Madden, Carolyn Cooper & substitute Sue Duffield

4 INSTRUCTIVE HAND OF THE MONTH Bridge: September 05, 2014 By Frank Stewart Tribune Media Services Tribune Content Agency (C)2014 Tribune Content Agency, LLC. "You won't believe this," Unlucky Louie told me, "but I actually won two finesses in the same deal." "That sounds too good to be true," I said. "It was, in a way," Louie said sadly. "By the time I won them, I was already down." Louie had been declarer at today's 3NT -- a scary contract -- and West led the deuce of spades. Louie consulted his personal oracle and played low from dummy. Alas, East took the queen and returned a spade, and the defence raced off five spade tricks. DOWN ONE "Later, the diamond finesse worked and the club finesse worked," Louie sighed, "but I was still down one." Louie should have taken full advantage of his good luck. To make 3NT, he needs East to hold both minor-suit kings. If East had A-x-x-x-x of spades as well, he wouldn't have opened the bidding but, at favourable vulnerability, would have had an easy one-spade overcall at his second turn. Louie must put up dummy's king on the first spade, assuming that West has the ace. DAILY QUESTION You hold: Q J 7 6 K 3 K 5 3. Your partner opens one diamond, you respond one spade, he bids two clubs and you return to two diamonds. Partner then bids two spades. What do you say? ANSWER: Your partner has extra strength and game interest (even though your two-diamond preference showed at most nine points). If he had a minimum hand with spade support such as A K 4, 5, A , J 7 4 2, he would have raised directly to two spades. Bid four spades.
