VICE CHAIRMAN S LETTER In 2018, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation s work to ensure that the National Museum of the Marine Corps tells the story of every man and woman who has earned the title Marine has continued to move forward, physical construction has been completed, new exhibits are being curated and plans for expanding our reach outside the Museum s walls continue. STATE OF THE FOUNDATION We are exploring new and innovative ways like the Distance Learning Lab, object-based lessons via video on demand and a new social media focus to take the Museum on the road and to educate even greater numbers of Americans on the history, traditions, culture and virtues of United States Marines. Additionally, the many programs supported by the Foundation continue to grow both in participation and recognition. This past year, the Marine Band Concerto Competition and the History Day event drew their largest number of students to date and the Annual Awards Dinner was filled to capacity. The Board of Directors has selected and welcomes a new President and CEO Major General James A. Kessler USMC (Ret). MajGen Kessler is an outstanding leader and is steadfastly committed to the mission of the Foundation. I am confident General Kessler will lead us into the future. I would also like to take a moment to thank Lieutenant General Robert Blackman for his exemplary service and dedication to the Foundation over the prior seven years. Rusty, we wouldn t be where we are without your leadership. On behalf of the Foundation Directors, staff and donors... thank you. Of course, none of the Foundation s work or programs would be successful at all without the unwavering support and incredible generosity of our supporters, donors and members. You have made it all possible. Thank you for all that you have done to make our National Museum a reality and to keep our programs alive. I know we can count on your continued support in Semper Fidelis, WINTER ANNUAL REPORT MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION 5

LETTERS FROM OUR OUTGOING AND INCOMING PRESIDENTS A TRANSITION IN LEADERSHIP Last year at this time, I wrote to announce that the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation had reached a significant milestone the successful completion of the Final Phase of construction of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. I noted that while the Medal of Honor Theater, the Combat Art Gallery and the Children s Gallery had opened, the Marine Corps would continue to fabricate, install and roll out a series of new exhibits where we could tell the stories of Marines who served from 1976 through today. This year, I am pleased to report that, thanks to the ongoing generosity of our supporters and the tireless efforts of our staff, Board of Directors and Museum colleagues, we have made great strides in our efforts to preserve and promulgate the history, traditions and culture of all Marines. Further, the year s success can be measured not only in the unabated continuation of programs supported by the Foundation but also by their growth. In addition, I am writing to announce that my time as President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation will come to a DEAR FRIENDS, As with every Marine Corps mission, that of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation to preserve and promulgate the history, traditions and culture of the Marine Corps and to educate all Americans in its virtues, is accomplished by a team of dedicated people, each doing his or her part. I am honored to have been selected by the Board of Directors to join this team as your next President and CEO and am eager to contribute to this vitally important mission. Having participated in some of our Corps most recent combat successes, I m keenly aware of the need to continue to tell the story of our Marines. The courage, resilience and fortitude shown by Marines from Beirut to Afghanistan will be on display as our newest exhibits begin to open. I m excited to be able to announce those openings as they occur in the very near future. I assume this new role at a point when the Foundation s vision of accomplishing its mission is transitioning from one of construction to one of expanding beyond bricks and mortar. The goal now is to develop a strategic plan for ensuring that the National Museum of the Marine Corps and Heritage Center remains a living testament to the depth and breadth of Marine Corps history and a lifetime destination for Americans of all ages and backgrounds, including those who are unable to physically visit this national treasure. 6 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT WINTER

close at the end of the 2018 calendar year. I have been honored to serve the Foundation, particularly in light of the many significant goals we have reached to ensure that there is and will remain a sacred place dedicated to the men and women who proudly served and are serving our Nation as Marines. Working here has been an extremely rewarding experience. Our Board of Directors has selected Major General James A. Kessler USMC (Ret) to lead the Foundation beginning on January 1. MajGen Kessler served a distinguished 33 years in our Corps. His military career culminated in his last assignment as Assistant Deputy Commandant, Installations and Logistics (Facilities) and, simultaneously, as the first Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations Command where he oversaw 24 worldwide installations with a workforce of more than 31,000 people and managed a budget in excess of $4 billion. Following his retirement, MajGen Kessler served as the in-country program manager of the Logistics Civilian Augmentation Program for DynCorp International in Kandahar, Afghanistan and then as Vice President of Materiel Management at LMI. Most importantly, MajGen Kessler has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the values our Foundation preserves. He is eminently qualified and ready to lead the Foundation. I have assured MajGen Kessler that he will find the Foundation s members and supporters to be faithfully dedicated to our mission. I know you will provide him the same level of support, enthusiasm and generosity that you have provided me for the last seven years. Your support has always been integral to the success of our Foundation and I am personally grateful for it. MajGen Kessler will take the helm at a time of transition and opportunity. Following the completed construction of the Museum s Final Phase, the Foundation is looking toward a future where we will take the history, traditions and culture of the United States Marine Corps to all Americans, extending our reach beyond the walls of the Museum so that the Heritage Center is an accessible destination for patrons of all ages and backgrounds regardless of their physical location or ability to travel. Thank you again for your support I am grateful for my time with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. Semper Fidelis, LIEUTENANT GENERAL ROBERT R. BLACKMAN, JR. USMC (RET) Retiring President & CEO, Marine Corps Heritage Foundation STATE OF THE FOUNDATION In addition to expanding the Museum s reach beyond its walls, the Foundation continues to enthusiastically support and assist in the growth of other programs and projects that contribute significantly to the core of our mission National History Day, the Marine Band Concerto Competition, Summer Concert Series, the Annual Awards Program, Museum educational programs and the many grants awarded to worthy projects aimed at enhancing the preservation of Marine Corps history. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors. I am excited to be working with an exceptionally strong and professional Board of Directors, the dedicated Foundation leadership and staff, and our superb colleagues at the Museum all of whom have been very welcoming. With your continued support, I am certain that we will be successful in reaching our goals. I remain, Semper Fidelis, MAJOR GENERAL JAMES A. 11 YEAR IN REVIEW NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MARINE CORPS HISTORICAL DIVISION EDUCATION DIVISION

YEAR IN REVIEW NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MARINE CORPS From the second deck of the National Museum of the Marine Corps, visitors can watch the development of the newest galleries as they transition from drawings and renderings into steel, interior walls, lights, and the largest of the artifacts that will be exhibited there. This is where we will tell the history of the Marine Corps from the post-vietnam War period through today s continued fight against terror. It has been especially exciting to see steel columns start to march across the floor, marking galleries and defining spaces, during the fall months. While the Museum had long hoped to be substantially complete with these new galleries in late 2018, federally funded fabrication contracts were not executed as promptly as planned, but we are pleased to predict that there will be at least one new Final Phase feature opening each year from 2019 through 2022 what a great incentive to give visitors so that they will continue to visit. To populate the new exhibitions, 30 life-like cast figures were created in 2018, guaranteeing the continued sense of realism for which our galleries are recognized. By Lin Ezell DIRECTOR, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MARINE CORPS

GALLERIES LEGACY WALK For the continuation of Legacy Walk the spine that connects all the galleries our fabrication contractor is producing some 150 graphics, artifact cases, and other support exhibitry needed for the exhibit stops along this pathway. Mounts are being made for the artifacts; oral history interviews are completed; 7 media units are under production; and the all-important but unseen IT infrastructure that connects all the dots has been designed and tested. In 2019, Legacy Walk will be ready for visitors. Next up will be the gallery dedicated to Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of the largest artifacts for this gallery are already in the building, awaiting their final placement. WORLD WAR I: BATTLE OF BELLEAU WOOD (CENTENNIAL) LEGACY WALK 150 graphics, artifact cases, and other support added to the Legacy Walk YEAR IN REVIEW 2018 marked the centennial of the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood. Given the battle s significance to the Marine Corps, the Museum remembered it in several ways, reacquainting visitors with the Great War in general and the Marines role specifically. On social media, we rolled out a series of Marine Corps Minutes short narrated films about the important places and fights of the war always encouraging viewers to come to the Museum s WWI gallery to learn more. The Education team spearheaded the WWI remembrances, which began in 2017, integrating the stories of that war into our public programming for two years. On 6 June 2018, the Anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood, visitors were invited to plant paper poppies, each of which was marked with the personal details of a Marine who was killed during WWI. A two-person living history team brought to life Floyd Gibbons newspaper reports from the battlefield. On Veterans Day, the Museum bell that hangs outside the Chapel joined bells all around the world as they tolled to remind us of the end of the fighting in Europe on 11 November 1918 at 11:00 a.m. Other important dates that were honored with special programming included the 75th Anniversary of Tarawa and the 35th Anniversaries of the Beirut bombing and Grenada Lifelike cast figures created in 2018 ART SHOW The Museum s second art show was installed in the Combat Art Gallery and also served to mark the centennial of World War I. Opening on 6 June, the exhibition was a collaborative effort with the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command. The 92 pieces were created by 42 artists, based on their own WWI experiences or from historical perspective. The show will remain in place until spring A companion line-up of paintings by Col Charles Waterhouse remembers Medal of Honor recipients from the period. Recognizing how important it is to capture images of Marines waging war, training, and helping those in need, the Museum with the support of MCHF sent several combat artists to the field to observe, sketch and lay the groundwork for finished works that will be added to the collection. Also opening in late 2018, two other artistic exhibitions that give visitors new glimpses into the collection included Hollywood Marines, a colorful and fun display of posters from movies that portrayed Marines; and A Tribute in Silver, featuring seldomseen silver objects. 92/42 92 works by 42 Marines became the focus of the second annual art show in the Combat Art Gallery WINTER ANNUAL REPORT MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION 11

ABOUT LIN EZELL Lin Ezell was appointed Director of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in July 2005, after having served 21 years with the Smithsonian s National Air and Space Museum. At the National Air and Space Museum, Lin held several senior positions, including Executive Officer for Development; Program Manager for the planning, design, and construction of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which opened near Washington Dulles International Airport in 2003; and Assistant Director for Collections Management. Lin retired from the National Museum of the Marine Corps at the end of December. COLLECTIONS Adding to and caring for our collections continued to be a major focus behind the scenes in All the artifacts needed for the continuation of Legacy Walk were carefully examined, conserved if needed, and measured for mounts. They are ready to be installed into cases where their stories will be told stories about 9/11, Marine family life, humanitarian support and American embassy duty around the globe. Curators have already selected the objects needed for the next two large galleries including two UAVs that were prepared for exhibition by our restoration specialists at the Museum Support Facility but they are still on the alert for additional objects with outstanding provenance and links to Marine Corps history. With the support of the leadership of the Corps, other spaces are being leased for the Museum at the off-site Museum Support Facility that will allow us to relocate more of the smaller collections to high-quality space, as well as move the collections team that cares for them. This is a major collections care milestone! And for the third year in a row, requests from other museums around the country were on the rise as they sought to borrow artifacts from NMMC for use in their exhibitions another way to share the wealth of our collections outside Quantico. SUPPORT FROM THE MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION In 2018, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation continued its commitment to supporting the Museum s education programs. The Distance Learning Lab is now hosting live shows that are broadcast to classrooms around the country and to Germany, too. This program has so much promise! Educators filmed several Trunk Programs and object-based lessons that will soon be available on demand, with plans to keep growing that library. NMMCKids, a new social media focus, was launched in 2018, another way to reach students and parents outside our walls. Homeschoolers with an interest in science came to the Museum to learn about simple machines, communications, hydraulics, the environment and reactionary engines but we did not forget about history. With every science lesson, students learned about how Marines have applied science and technology to their mission. In-classroom Trunk Programs, Summer Camps, Scouting activities, Pre-school Playdates, workshops and student tours all combined to reach over 53,000 students and teachers at the Museum and in the nearby region. VISITATION When we first opened our doors in 2006, we estimated that we would need some 300 volunteers to provide quality guest services by the time the Museum was complete. With some aggressive recruitment, especially for hospitality ambassadors, the visitor services team reached that goal in The Museum s Marine detachment, paid staff and volunteers combined forces to greet nearly 500,000 visitors, give tours, facilitate professional military education visits and prepare for hundreds of ceremonies. The docent-led outreach team took our message on the road to venues in the Mid-Atlantic but also as far away as North Carolina. We love having the opportunity to tell new audiences about the Museum on the road or under our roof. Our visitor services program is generously funded by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, something we are grateful for every day! Since coming on board as the first Director in 2005, the Foundation has always been there to support me, bridge gaps and give my team and me new opportunities for success. We have a solid plan in place to complete the Final Phase exhibitions, and we re already starting to export our programs beyond our walls always as partners. There is so much potential to keep growing stronger with the help of the Foundation and the leadership of the Marine Corps. I have never worked with a more dedicated can-do group of passionate people. As I retire at the close of 2018, I thank them all for the honor to have led such a talented team. Together, we make a difference! 12 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT WINTER

INTERNS ARE MAKING INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EFFORTS OF THE MUSEUM STAFF ACROSS A WIDE RANGE OF FUNCTIONS Our 2018 interns came from eight colleges and contributed their talents to the curatorial, education and public affairs staffs at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Their combined talents made a difference in the successful delivery of dozens of programs; added substance and content to our social media presence; and assisted in the care of and accounting for the artifact collections. They left with resumé bullets that may help them land their first professional job and, perhaps, an enthusiasm for careers in the museum field. The Museum is ever so grateful to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for supporting the intern program. 1 Abigail attends the University of Mary Washington. Along with other summer interns assigned to the Education Team, she helped with the centennial of Belleau Wood event, Summer Camps, Family Days and Pre-school Playdates. One of her special projects was redesigning the Little Leathernecks Gallery Guide and the animal scavenger hunt. Abigail also worked on an introductory video about the Museum intended for middle school students and teachers and created a Pre-school Playdate and Distance Learning video. She loved seeing how excited visitors got during the special activities. 2 Cameron attends Virginia Tech where she studies history and political science. She interned with the Education Team this summer which provided her the opportunity to assist with coordinating and executing several events, including the Belleau Wood Centennial and Summer Camps. She saw the internship as a wonderful chance to try something new, from programming bee bots to recording videos for the new social media platform for kids. She was able to use her photography skills to update brochures and add social media content. 3 5 ABIGAIL BROCK CAMERON BROWN ETHAN BURGESS Ethan recently graduated from Longwood University with a bachelor s degree in history and interned with the Ordnance Curatorial Staff, his second summer working with this collection. He researched and presented potential acquisitions to the Collections Committee and Director, cataloged artifacts and researched and rehoused a large component of the inert explosives collection. Ethan also assisted with the installation of artifacts on display in the Museum s galleries, but it was object-based research that most excited him. 4 LINDSAY DILLON Lindsay, a student at Liberty University, served as an intern with the Aviation Curatorial Team during the summer. She cataloged and handled hundreds of objects, conducted historical research and acquainted herself with the entire collections team and its responsibilities. Of particular note, Lindsay cataloged three large collections of more than 150 objects associated with famed combat photographer Norman T. Hatch. Additionally, she assisted with photographing over 460 pieces of art in storage at the Museum Support Facility; sorted and edited hundreds of photographs of objects; re-housed reference files; assisted with the triennial 2 per cent collections inventory; and researched, co-wrote, and presented an acquisition recommendation before the July Collections Committee. ERIN METCALF A public relations and Spanish student at the University of South Carolina, Erin was instrumental in welcoming and engaging more than 100,000 students and visitors via social media. As an intern working with the Public Affairs Team, one of her larger projects was creating a website timeline that showcased important dates in the history of Women Marines. After extensive research and close coordination with the Marine Corps History Division, she gathered more than 80 pieces of content, including copy, photos and videos. The timeline is now part of NMMC s website page created for the 100th anniversary of women in the Marine Corps. This was Erin s second summer with the Museum where she played a key role in developing strategies that increased the active fan base across several social media platforms.

6 ARIEL RUSSELL From May to August 2018, Ariel, a senior at Christopher Newport University majoring in art history, interned with Art Curator Joan Thomas. She had previously volunteered during the summer of 2017 and hit the ground running. Ariel supported the inventory, processing and cataloging of newly accessioned collections and those found in collection. She prepared acquisition reports and successfully proposed several works to the Museum s Collections Committee and Director for inclusion in the permanent collection. She and a special assistant re-housed several collections of works on paper, participated in the required 2 per cent random inventory and updated digital images of the collection. Ariel also served on the Installation Team for the Museum s second art show, A World at War: The U.S. Marine Corps and Navy in World War I. With her background in art history and as the daughter of a Marine, she was a tremendous asset to the combat art collection during her internship. Ariel noted that her favorite accomplishment was the opportunity to present artwork to the Collections Committee. 1 2 YEAR IN REVIEW 7 FERNANDO SOTO A student at George Mason University majoring in government and international politics, Fernando accepted an internship with the Education Staff. He prepared materials for the camps which included creating a lesson plan about the Continental Marines and pollination. He also assisted with the monthly Family Days and Pre-School Playdates. For these events, he directed families to the classrooms and ran activity stations. Fernando helped create a Distance Learning Program about the Montford Point Marines which will be featured in February for African American history month. He remarked that his favorite part of the internship was being a counselor for the Summer Camps EMMA VO A sophomore at Germanna Community College at the time of her internship, Emma planned to transfer to George Mason in the fall. During her summer with the Education Team, she helped with preparation for and directly supported the Belleau Wood Centennial events, along with the Summer Camps. Emma created a special gallery hunt for Girl Scouts and developed a message board on which visitors to the Museum can send holiday wishes to Marines. She was especially proud of the team s phenomenal remembrance of the 100th anniversary of such an important WWI battle TEAGAN WILLIAMS Interning with the Education Team, Teagan is a senior at George Mason University. She supported the well-attended Centennial of Belleau Wood event, assisting with the labor-intensive preparations required to make this a success. Teagan was also involved in the monthly family day events held on second Saturdays. She said, This internship gave me hands-on experience making lesson plans and teaching in front of an audience. I am currently searching for a career in teaching. My experience at the National Museum of the Marine Corps will help me in my career after I graduate. 8 9 WINTER ANNUAL REPORT MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION 15

YEAR IN REVIEW STATE OF MARINE CORPS HISTORY By Paul Weber ACTING DIRECTOR, MARINE CORPS HISTORY DIVISION The mission of the Marine Corps History Division is to preserve, present and publish Marine Corps history and the Division was quite busy meeting this mission over the past year. Division staff attended more than 20 different conferences and out-of-town presentations; provided lectures to Marines, Marine-centric organizations and other patriotic or historical associations; took delivery of a new production printer; and hosted a very successful First World War Historical Symposium in mid-july. For the first time in quite some time, Division The University of historians traveled to the Society for Military South Carolina has History s annual conference, held in Louisville, Kentucky. Plans are being made to attend the 2019 conference in Columbus, Ohio as well. Many of the presentations delivered by Division employees across the Nation the past year focused primarily on the Centennial of World War I. Ms. Annette Amerman, head of the Reference Branch, spoke at the Marines Memorial Club in San Francisco at the invitation of LtGen Jan Huly USMC (Ret), and a month later in St. Louis at the invitation of the Commanding Officer, Recruit Station St. Louis. Both presentations were on the topic of World War I. Mr. Doug Nash, senior historian, spoke at U.S. Marine Forces South about Guadalcanal and then

and Reference Branches. While we can quantify their accomplishments through the number of hours they work (more than 4,100 hours), it is the quality of their work that continues to advance the mission. The energy and passion they bring to the job might be their greatest contribution. REFERENCE BRANCH 11 Interns 2 Shaw Fellows 1 Digital Specialist The Reference Branch, with support from the Archives Branch and the Editing and Design Branch, hosted a First World War Historical Symposium during three days in July. It drew more than 150 attendees, including family members of World War I Marines. A wide range of speakers covered many topics, including Dr. Sergio Rezendes from the Azores, who related the history of the small Marine aviation unit stationed there to perform anti-submarine patrols. The Marine Corps Historical Company participated as well; their very detailed displays provided a concrete visual counterpoint to the lectures and presentations. The grandson of Thomas Alexander Boyd, author of Through the Wheat, attended and, in an act of overwhelming generosity, he donated his grandfather s diary to the archive. His contribution of this invaluable window into the past is historically important, especially when one realizes that, although the diary s existence was long known, no one had ever seen or read it. The diary will now be preserved for research into that important period of Marine Corps history Attendees at the First World War Historical Symposium PUBLICATIONS Two Journals Two issues of USMC History One comprehensive update of Women in the Marine Corps The Reference Branch assisted the White House in commemorating the 35th anniversary of the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon and the awarding of the Medal of Honor to retired SgtMaj John Canley USMC for his actions during the battle of Hue in Both projects required close and continuous communication with Marine Corps leadership and were accomplished with professional skill and attention to detail. ARCHIVES BRANCH Major accomplishments for the Archives Branch included the digitization of the official World War II records from campaigns on Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, and Iwo Jima making them more readily available to the public and easier for the staff to work with. General Roy Geiger s complete papers were digitized, primarily documenting his World War II service as commander of III Amphibious Corps. Additionally, George Barnett s photograph collection was digitized and made available on the archive s Flickr page. The collection has 379 photographs documenting his entire career, beginning with graduation from the Naval Academy in 1881 through his service as Commandant during World War I. It will also allow the Division to accommodate a sudden surge in interest in a particular volume without having to engage in the cumbersome commercial printing process. Delivery of this printer is the culmination of almost three years of work, combining the efforts of the senior editor, the fiscal clerk and the regional contracting office. Editing and Design completed two Marine Corps University Journals, two issues of Marine Corps History, World War I and Vietnam commemoratives, and a comprehensive update of women in the Marine Corps titled The Very Few, the Proud: Women in the Marine Corps, This last title was completed in time for distribution to each attendee at the biennial Women Marine Association convention in late August. Editing and Design also played a major part in the successful creation of the Belleau Wood book as well, providing essential and efficient editing and design of the manuscript to push through delivery of the entire print run two weeks ahead of schedule. HISTORIES BRANCH Histories Branch has worked on a variety of projects. Primary among them is the continuing effort to positively identify the Marines at the flagpole for the second flag raising on Iwo Jima. To this end, the Branch has more than doubled its holdings of photographs documenting the flag raising and assembled an impressive volume of documents relating to the event. Viewed in that light, the Marine Corps History Division may easily hold the greatest number of Iwo Jima documents outside of the National Archives. The Voices of the Corps project its outline proposed more than a year ago by several veterans, including Mr. Peter Linsert and Col George Zamka proposed to combine oral history clips of notable Marines with videos or still photographs to create short, YouTube-type clips for a virtual mentoring project. Histories Branch worked with the Marine Corps Association Foundation to bring these voices from the past to modern-day Marines. Dr. Fred Allison, oral historian, screens and selects the clips and the Marine Corps Association Foundation does the voice-overs and combines all the parts to create the video. Dr. Allison also conducted a series of career interviews with former Secretary of the Navy James Webb and started anew the practice of periodically interviewing the sitting Commandant, leading to a full career interview following his retirement. In sum, although 2018 has been a very busy year, it has also been a successful one. The entire division appreciates its mission to promote Marine Corps history, to preserve the history and to present the history to the largest possible audience. Although our primary customers are the Marines in the Marine Corps, we fully understand that, in fact, all Americans are our patron base. They support us and we support their Marine Corps. 22 INTERN SUPPORT Marine Corps History Division benefits greatly from the outstanding support provided by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. This support reaches across several functions, enabling the Division to better accomplish our mission. By PAUL WEBER ACTING DIRECTOR, MARINE CORPS HISTORY DIVISION As of the middle of October, the Foundation has generously supported over 4100 hours of intern work, 2768 hours of fellowship support and 1419 hours of digitization support. The support is invaluable as the work accomplished reaches across the entire organization. Progress continues to be made in digitizing the Reference Branch internal working files. Doing so enables branch historians to quickly consult an electronic file to answer questions, provide copies or create a CD to send to patrons. Although the Division retains the paper files, it is easier to an electronic file providing better service at less cost for labor, materials, and postage to the government. The digital files lend themselves to rapid cross-referencing, making it easier to quickly assemble information on closely related topics. The Master s Thesis and Doctoral Dissertation Programs continue apace, with two dissertation applications approved this year. This year, there was just one Master s Thesis application and it received an award. The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation generously supports the writing and research programs, which generate a wide variety of articles and other works covering Marine Corps History. Many of the pieces this past year focused on the 50th anniversary of Marine Corps involvement in Vietnam and the World War I Centennial Commemoration; however, the projects are not limited to those subjects. The semi-annual Marine Corps History is a good place to read the wide variety of articles being written on our history. Marine Corps History articles are reviewed by an editorial board. The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation s generous support allows History Division to better and more completely report the history of our Corps and make that history available as a study and learning resource. This summer, three interns worked in the Archives Branch performing the initial document screen for the Amphibious Vehicle Test Bed files, which was delivered on thirteen pallets, with records reaching back to the early 1970 s. This initial sorting is labor intensive but is an absolute requirement to properly begin the classification process and appropriately store them for greater usability. Annually, just before the Christmas holidays, we solicit interns through the colleges and universities with military history programs. We also send announcements to schools that previously provided interns; hence, a good number of our interns attend Mary Washington and Liberty Universities. 24 YEAR THE EDUCATION IN DEPARTMENT REVIEW By Christina Johnson NMMC PROJECT COORDINATOR The Education Department at the National Museum of the Marine Corps greatly increased its program offerings in 2018, reaching its largest audience yet for visitors under the age of 18. Whether greeting a school bus at the Museum or performing a Trunk Program at a school, the Education Staff takes pride in their important work with kids. In 2018, more than 52,000 student groups, families, homeschool students, and pre-school students visited the Museum. HISTORY TRUNK PROGRAMS For those students who could not visit the Museum, the traveling Teaching Trunk program served over 16,000 K-12 students, its largest audience to date. Trunk Programs cover Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum in addition to the History of the United States Marine Corps for elementary, middle, and high school levels. The elementary program covers aspects of Colonial Revolutionary War eras, while at the middle and high School levels there are five different Trunk Programs covering the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II and Cold War (Korea-Vietnam) Trunks. STEM TRUNK PROGRAMS This year the Education Department continued its newest Trunk Program, From Ships to the Shore: Keeping Marines Afloat. This program covers the beginning of the Marine Corps and life on a ship with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) focus. Students explore the density of objects and fluids through hands-on science demonstrations and attempt to construct a sea-worthy, load-bearing ship from construction paper. This program covers Virginia Standards of Learning curriculum for 5th grade science. In FY18 the Education Department performed 25 Trunk Programs for 625 local school students. Next year our goal is to expand our content offerings by introducing another new STEM Trunk based on methods of communication in the Marine Corps. 22 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT WINTER

FAMILY DAYS 2018 Family Days were again a great success and brought more than 7,000 visitors to the Museum. One of the largest crowd-drawing events was the Museum s 100th Anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Belleau Wood bringing in almost 4,000 visitors over a two day period. Our guests participated in a variety of activities including making and planting an individualized poppy which commemorated Marines who lost their lives in WWI. Visitors also viewed artifacts, watched a first-person skit about Floyd Gibbons, learned about WWI communication and map reading, and our young visitors learned the true story of Winnie-the-Pooh. Other well-attended events included Military Child Appreciation, Aviation, Secret Codes, Robotics, Halloween and Christmas Family Days. YEAR IN REVIEW SUMMER CAMPS In 2018, the Education Department continued its Summer Camp offerings, including Semper Fun Camp, Art Camp, Engineering Camp and Girls Rock History Camp. During Semper Fun, campers learned about Marine Corps history and enjoyed hands-on activities for each era. During Engineering Camp, campers built bridges, constructed tetrahedral kites and launched straw rockets. Campers at Girls Rock History Camp learned Marine Corps history through the lens of the American Girl book series. The campers made tri-corn hats, designed ships, programmed robots and made periscopes. Each activity was based on a theme of Marine Corps history as well as the time periods of the books. In total, the Museum hosted more than 70 campers. Additionally, the Education Department debuted a new two-day summer camp called Adventure Days. Two of these camps were held for children aged 3-4 and 5-6. Forty young students sang songs, watched a puppet show, completed science experiments and made crafts. The camp utilized the new Children s Gallery space as a way to introduce the young learners to museums. HISTORY DAY The Museum continued its sponsorship of the Region 5 History Day event at Mount Vernon High School in March and there were a number of students with Marine Corps-themed projects connecting to the History Day theme of Conflict and Compromise in History. 26 local Prince William County student, Pyseth Seumsouk, a 7th grader from Porter Traditional School, won the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation History Day Award for his design of an amazing website entitled The Battle of Khe Sanh which can be viewed at Pyseth s project stood out as being the most researched and creative entry with a military or Marine Corps focus. He told me he was very inspired by the National Museum of the Marine Corps for his project and he loves to read anything related to Military History. The 2019 theme will be Triumph and Tragedy in History. DISTANCE LEARNING STUDIO In 2018, the Education Department continued to work on its new Distance Learning initiative. This initiative will be a solution for teachers, local or out-of-state, and groups who want to host a Trunk Program but don t have the flexibility to do so at their school or in their community. With our new distance learning technology, teachers can book a virtual Trunk Program that can be broadcast live or downloaded remotely for ultimate classroom flexibility. The program will not only cover the same topics as our traveling Trunk Programs, but will include additional special topics such as the Montford Point Marines and Female Marines. The Education Department has already connected with over 300 students using this technology and looks forward to expanding it in HOMESCHOOL DAYS In February 2018, the Education Department began hosting Homeschool Science day. This program is designed for homeschooled families with children of all ages. The students learn about different science topics based upon Marine Corps themes. So far this year five programs have been hosted: lighter-than-air, simple machines, WWI communication, hydraulics, and environmental science. In December 2018, a sixth program reactionary engines was added. Homeschool Science days have been very successful with average attendance being close to 600 participants per program. PRE-SCHOOL PLAYDATES For our youngest visitors, the department continued to offer Pre-School Playdates, a program designed for children up to age 5. During the Playdate, students sing songs, color and make crafts based on early childhood developmental milestones and Marine Corps themes. The program has reached over 200 toddlers in 2018 and continues to be a great place for young children to play and learn. NMMC KIDS Over the summer, the Education Department began its own social media presence with the development of NMMCkids. With Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, NMMCkids is designed to allow families to dive deeper into Marine Corps topics through videos, hands-on projects, special topic trivia and games. In the future, NMMCkids will offer Education curriculum, Family Day projects, Pre-School Playdate crafts and more for those who are not able to attend programs in person. This year the Education Department performed 25 Trunk Programs, including a new STEM Trunk Program, for 625 local students and served more than 16,000 students with the traveling Teaching Trunk Program. 24 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT WINTER

YEAR IN REVIEW TEACHER IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM The National Museum of the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation have sponsored the Teacher in Residence (TIR) program for the past decade. The Teacher in Residence program allows selected teachers the opportunity to develop methods for teaching the rich history and heritage of the United States Marine Corps and introduce the National Museum of the Marine Corps to teachers and students from across the country. TIR Programs in 2018 included: STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM This one day program reaches both high level students trying to find leadership programs to help them as they assume leadership roles in their schools and prepare for college as well as at-risk students whose education is in jeopardy for any number of reasons. Participants in this program, both students and their chaperones, have raved about the experience and we are now seeing repeat participation from groups in the region. In 2018 we hosted three separate student groups totaling 75 participants. PWCS TEACHER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM As a liaison for Prince William County Schools, the Teacher in Residence continues to support the county by creating new curriculum. This year the TIR also helped expand the county s coaching program to show teachers how they can improve literacy and critical thinking skills in their Social Studies classes. This included developing online training videos and in-person training sessions for newer teachers. By merging Marine Corps history with Virginia Standards of Learning, the Museum continues to be a significant resource for local teachers. ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY DAY The TIR and Education Department members presented our Trunk Program offerings to more than 100 Elementary and Secondary School Teachers as part of their back to school information sessions. Teachers loved seeing the programs in action and enjoyed hearing about all of the other great educational resources the Museum has to offer. We also hosted a repeat session titled Commemorating WWI in your Classroom. This workshop introduced the Museum s WWI lessons and activities for middle and high school students. Teachers interacted with the new material and discussed ways it could be used in their classrooms. They also received class sets of our WWI newspapers which can be used for a variety of activities. MEDAL OF HONOR WORKSHOPS In October, the Museum hosted the Medal of Honor Foundation for a character development workshop. One hundred plus elementary and secondary school teachers learned how to use the stories of Medal of Honor recipients to encourage students to have positive behavior in the classroom and in the community. Teachers received a packet of resources and a flash drive with additional videos and activities to use in their classrooms. VIETNAM COMMEMORATION WORKSHOP The TIR partnered with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund to pilot a full day Teacher Workshop on the Vietnam War focusing specifically on the 50th commemoration of Khe Sanh. Teachers shared best practices for discussing the War with students and received a variety of resources to use in their classrooms. The twenty-five middle and high school teachers who were selected to attend gave meaningful feedback on future program offerings both at the Museum and in the classroom. 28 MARINE BAND CONCERTO COMPETITION By MCHF Staff This past year marked the tenth anniversary of the United States Marine Band s Concerto Competition for high school musicians. Supported by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the winning student receives a $2,500 scholarship and an opportunity to appear as a guest soloist with The President s Own. The co-winners of the first competition in 2008 included oboe player Timothy Gocklin and tuba player Ibanda Ruhumbika. After graduating from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Gocklin is currently performing with the Akropolis Reed Quintet, an award-winning ensemble that champions, according to its website, the next generation of maverick musicians. Tuba player Ruhumbika also made a career for himself as a professional musician. While he attended The Juilliard School in New York, he and some friends formed Stay Human, a band comprised of the unusual combination of saxophone, washboard, tuba, trombone, drums, piano, and harmonaboard (melodica). After several years of honing their sound in live performances and recording albums, Stay Human became the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in September Now, ten years later, a tuba player has once again claimed the top prize. On February 24, 2018 the Marine Band hosted its annual recital for the Concerto Competition for High School Musicians at the John Philip Sousa Band Hall in Washington, D.C. The panel of judges consisted of Marine Band Director Col Jason K. Fettig, Assistant Directors Maj Michelle A. Rakers and Capt Ryan J. Nowlin, and guest adjudicator professor Dennis Zeisler from Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Va. The semi-finalists included tuba player Robert Black, flutist Jennifer Wang, saxophone player Jordan Savage, flutist Tessa Vermeulen, and bassoonist Daniel McCarty. The winner of the competition, Robert Black is a junior at Vernon Hills High School in Illinois. He studies with Scott Tegge, who teaches at Northern Illinois and DePaul Universities. Black received honorable mention in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra s Concerto Competition in 2018 and 26 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT WINTER

AND THEN THE ADVENTURE BEGAN! COLONEL TOM DALZELL S JOURNEY Tom Dalzell attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, more commonly known as Virginia Tech, from 1953 to 1958 on an athletic scholarship to earn his civil engineering degree and was in his last year of studies when he received his draft notice. While en route to the library one evening, he passed a Marine Corps Officer Selection Officer (OSO). Tom looked over his material and listened to what he had to say. When he left the library, he again passed by the Marine OSO. Tom explained his current situation he would graduate in May, he had a contract to play professional football with the Chicago Bears, but it was highly likely that he would be drafted upon graduation. After the OSO explained the benefits of another option enlist in the Marine Corps and attend OCS Tom signed up on the spot. When he returned home he said to his wife, Allie, Guess what I did? I joined the Marine Corps. Allie s reply was, and then the adventure began! They viewed Tom s joining the Marine Corps as an opportunity to see the world, which they both wanted to do. Navy personnel with whom he worked, the physical location of the base, and the opportunity to see the world made for a great duty station. That tour of duty convinced Tom to make the Marine Corps a career. Colonel Dalzell later served on the staff of the Commander in Chief Pacific (CINCPAC) in the J-4 section overseeing the civil engineering support plans for all U.S. operational plans throughout the Pacific. He later trained thousands of Marines in engineering skills while serving as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Engineer School at Camp Lejeune. His last assignment as a Colonel was as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Facilities for the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, NC. For the next 31 years, Tom was an active duty Marine, retiring as a Colonel in May After an initial tour of duty with the 7th Engineer Battalion at Camp Pendleton, he was assigned to Marine Barracks Subic Bay, Philippines. Assigned to the Naval Station San Miguel North of Subic Bay, he was in charge of external security of the installation. The combination of training the young Marines who were assigned guard duty, the 48 MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT WINTER

SUPPORT FOR THE FOUNDATION After his beloved wife, Allie, passed away, Tom needed to revise his living trust. He had been considering a legacy gift for some time, but it wasn t until he updated his trust that he put in writing the idea that had been percolating -- including a gift to the MCHF. Said Tom, I have received so much more from the Marine Corps than I could ever have given in return. And, I believe it is our moral obligation to use our personal financial resources to the benefit of others. My 31 years in the Marine Corps was a truly inspiring and rewarding experience. I encourage you to consider including a gift to the MCHF from your estate. I can t think of a better way to honor your Marine service as well as the service of all Marines. When he returned home he said to his wife, Allie, Guess what I did? I joined the Marine Corps. Allie s reply was, and then the adventure began! MAKE A GIFT TODAY If you, like Tom, have already made a gift to the MCHF from your will or trust but haven t notified us, or, if you are considering doing so, please contact Gayle Union, (703) , or union@marineheritage.org. THANK YOU! WINTER ANNUAL REPORT MARINE CORPS HERITAGE FOUNDATION 49
