3 A Life s Journey Music by Choreography by Concept by Lighting by Costumes by Program Notes John Bucchino Kristin Sudeikis Brian McGinness Philip Leonard Curtain Call, Candy Apple Costumes Jill Hochman For Brian McGinness, music and refl ection became two tracks that converged and thus provided the vision and inspiration for A Life s Journey. Several years ago, Brian became captivated by three pieces on a CD titled, Grateful, The Songs of John Buchinno. Whenever he listened, Brian found himself fl ooded with emotionally tinged memories that caused him to refl ect on life, blessings, the untimely death of loved ones and forgiveness. Buchinno s compelling lyrics and masterful piano accompaniment had a profound and residual effect that left Brian feeling at once exhilarated and perplexed. And then, one day, Brian became enlightened when he discovered a relationship among the three compositions: Grateful, Temporary and Better Than I. As he said, Suddenly, the three pieces seemed to fi t together in a story. Brian already knew that there was only one person he could entrust with the creation of a ballet to complement a work so near and dear to his heart. This was Miller-Marley alumnus and choreographer, Kristin Sudeikis. Kristin said, When Brian related the story to me I was overwhelmed. Brian was my teacher and mentor. To have the opportunity to work with him to bring this amazing project to fruition was a dream come true. A Life s Journey follows a young man s evolution on his journey from youth to adulthood. A man and woman unite in marriage. A son is born. The man succumbs to temptation and suffers devastating consequences that will plague him for years to come. Caught in a cycle that takes an unrelenting downward spiral, the wife s life is cut short by Cancer, and the man is faced with an unforgiving son. In the end, broken and alone, the man turns to his faith, makes peace with his son and is granted forgiveness for his transgressions. As Brian explained, there have been only two projects that have come close to inspiring in him the degree of passion, as has A Life s Journey. One is the musical, Once on This Island (that he choreographed for Music Theatre for Young People) and the other is the play, Wit (that he directed for Blue Valley North High School). Once on This Island has forgiveness as its central theme. Wit, that chronicles a female Cancer patient s fi nal hours, was particularly challenging due to the fact that two weeks before Brian began the rehearsal process, a dear friend, with whom he had danced in the Kansas City Ballet, lost her life to the disease. Last fall, the studio mourned the loss of Sharon Ingebritson, who also died of Cancer. For these reasons, when Brian conceptualized A Life s Journey, forgiveness and death became integral elements of the story. As Brian explained, Rather than just creating pretty pictures, this ballet is going to take us to a new level of dance that deals with human experience. This involves, as Kristin Sudeikis stated, the ability of the artist to put himself/herself in another s shoes, to see the world through their eyes with music and dance as the medium of communication. Though A Life s Journey deals with serious subject matter, it also reminds us, as the song says, to be truly grateful and truly blessed for the gifts God has given us. And, what we learn, we pass on as a gift to someone else. We are truly grateful for the Miller-Marley Youth Ballet whose dancers have given life to A Life s Journey by embracing each moment with their whole hearts and souls.

6 Act 2 Alice in Wonderland By arrangement with G. Schirmer, Inc. publisher and copyright owner. Music by Choreography Costume Designer Lighting Designer Company Stage Manager OEHS Technical Advisor Graphic Designer Marketing Director Herbert Baumann Alice im Wunderland Based on the book by Lewis Caroll Laura Branson Elaine Biggs Philip Leonard Brian McGinness Gary Goddard Kevin Smith Jill Hochman Backdrop rentals provided by Mark Short of Kenmark Inc., Scenic Backdrops And Nicole Lenander of Grosh Backdrops and Drapery Program Notes by Jill Hochman The ballet, Alice in Wonderland, is based on the immortal children s classic by Lewis Carroll. As the story begins, Alice and her sister are sitting in the park, where Alice s sister is reading aloud from a book. Bored with the story, Alice closes her eyes and falls asleep. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a white Rabbit pops up, who seems to be headed somewhere in quite a hurry. Curiosity getting the best of her, Alice follows the rabbit to his rabbit hole, stumbles in after him and Alice s adventure into the unknown begins. Underground, Alice finds herself in front of a tiny door. Just as Alice bemoans the fact that she is too big to fit through the door, she is presented with a bottle labeled, Drink Me. Alice drinks from the bottle and magically shrinks to a size small enough to fit through the door. Passing through the door, Alice enters Wonderland. Once there, Alice is introduced to a cast of quirky and exotic characters who defy even her wildest imagination. Among them are the twins, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the mysterious Caterpillar, the grinning Cheshire Cat and the outlandish threesome, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter and the Dormouse. In the royal court is the Queen of Hearts, who has a penchant for impatience, along with her pacifying husband, the King of Hearts and their dutiful servant, the Jack of Hearts. Alice s well-ordered world is turned upside down as she finds herself struggling to make sense out of the series of nonsensical events that ensue. At a tea party, thrown by the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the downtrodden Dormouse, Alice, expecting her hosts to exhibit the proper decorum for such an occasion, is shocked when party turns into a madcap free-for-all and leaves abruptly. Alice finds that she is at once repelled and attracted to the eccentric inhabitants of a domain where everyone makes up the rules as they go along; where time and space are irrelevant and absurdity reigns. As her adventure continues, Alice stumbles into the palace gardens where a white rose bush has mistakenly been planted instead of a red one. The Queen hates white roses. A foursome of Royal Painters are frantically covering the white roses with red paint before the Queen discovers the mishap. Just at this moment, the Queen enters the garden and upon seeing this display, flies into a rage. The painters point to Alice as the perpetrator and the Queen sentences Alice to a trial. As the trial begins, Alice is chased around the palace courtyard where the King is the judge and the Queen s retinue is a deck of playing cards. The entire jury is composed of all the characters Alice has encountered on her journey into Wonderland. When Alice courageously approaches the stand to defend herself, the Queen is outraged and summons the royal soldiers to do away with the girl. As Alice frantically fights to free herself from their clutches, the King discovers evidence to prove that the royal painters are actually the guilty ones. After the King pronounces her innocent, Alice finds herself lying on the park bench safe and sound. Was the mysterious land real or was it just a dream?
