What to expect from the Science Festival... The best science from Britain and around the globe. Over 350 expert speakers from Nobel Prize winners, CEOs and bench-level researchers to government ministers and leading media commentators all with an incredible range of subjects. Dynamic programming. Delivering innovative event formats and creative pairings, to engage people of all ages with the latest topics and discoveries. Hands-on Science. Five bespoke interactive areas including the Discover Zone our largest and longest running interactive space showcasing cutting-edge technology and giving children and adults the opportunity to get hands-on with science. Intimate venues and a unique festival format. A rare opportunity for people from all backgrounds to meet with scientists, engineers and policy-makers, and engage in twoway dialogue. SpaceZone Building on the success of 2015 s DinoZone, this year we will be creating a new and immersive SpaceZone to coincide with the end of Tim Peake s Principia Mission.

5 SpaceZone Building on the success of 2015 s DinoZone, this year we will be creating a new and immersive SpaceZone to coincide with the end of Tim Peake s Principia Mission. Our SpaceZone will explore the latest in space research from aerospace engineering to astrobiology, planetary science and cosmology. Our aims are to: Ignite passion and curiosity for space exploration and encourage the next generation of scientists and engineers Maintain and develop the interest of those inspired by Principia, raising the profile and application of STEM subjects amongst school students Increase understanding of space science and how it benefits us in our daily lives 2016 Themes This year we will be developing three key themes for the Festival which will weave through our interactive spaces and programme of over 200+ events. These will be Space, Health and Technology. Hosting a packed programme of school group visits, free family sessions and free events for adults, this year s fully curated interactive space will encourage visitors to join us on a journey to explore our universe. With hands-on exhibits, soundscape and lighting design, film footage and activities, visitors will be supported by CSF shuttle engineers and research scientists throughout, creating an exciting, engaging multi-sensory experience. 8 THE TIMES CHELTENHAM SCIENCE FESTIVAL 9

6 Technology From wearable tech, to artificial intelligence and biomimetics, this year s Festival will explore distruptive technologies and developments from around the globe that will shape our lives in years to come. Wider strands and topics In addition to Space and Technology we are also keen to work closely with partners to explore wider topics. Suggestions include: Antibiotic Resistance The 4th Dimension Putting Women on the Moon Heroes and Bystanders How to Run a Marathon Consciousness Truth about Love Fusion Advances Driverless Cars Beer Making Beautiful Equations Coding workshops TechSpace Discover Zone Encourage young visitors to get hands-on and gain an understanding of the key principles that will revolutionise future technologies via the creation of new interactive activities. We re particularly keen to take a look at the latest innovations in wearable tech, from necklaces that can monitor your vital signs to sportswear inspired by nature. How soon will new tech and materials redefine clothing, and why might the Googleglass be a passing fad? Technology Strand Through a carefully curated series of events and workshops we will be exploring the incredible and ominous potential of technologies that are at the frontiers of human interaction. We are keen to work with partners to explore the latest innovations and to spark powerful dialogue with our audiences, whether enhancing coding skills in one of our 14+ workshops; debating the sinister potential of the dark web; or taking a first look at some of the new materials that are going to revolutionize the way we use technology. 10 THE TIMES CHELTENHAM SCIENCE FESTIVAL 11

7 Interactive Engagement Cheltenham Science Festival is renowned for its interactive areas and its beating heart is the Discover Zone for schools and families. The Discover Zone is centred in the Town Hall and is our largest interactive space with activities ranging from code-breaking with GCHQ to finding out how water can be used to create fire with Spirax Sarco. Approximately 5,500 KS1, 2 and 3 pupils visit the Discover Zone during the week and thousands more parents and children join us at the weekend, making it the ideal place to interact with the next generation of young scientists and engineers. The Discover Zone also opens to the 16+ age group on selected evenings of the Festival, allowing exhibitors the chance to engage in more in depth discussion with adult visitors. Bespoke Interactive Zones A number of our Principal Partners also work with us to develop bespoke interactive zones in the Festival Gardens. This includes our new and multi-sensory SpaceZone for 2015 which will be targeted at the 11+ age group. The free Discover Zone (no kids allowed!) on Friday night was BRILLIANT. Engaging Young People in STEM An estimated 12,000 young people visited the Festival participating in a wide range of exciting and dynamic activities.

Science for Schools Programme: A Festival within a Festival, featuring over 120 inspiring events designed to enthuse and engage pupils and to support teachers in promoting STEM in and out of the classroom Weekend Family Programme: 17 events as well as demos and free family activities Early Years Discover Zone: a 1-day playing and learning event tailored specifically to the under 7s Science Stunts: drawing local people to the Festival with a young T rex prowling Cheltenham Town Centre My pupils loved it. Many went back again over the weekend with their families... Several have decided they now want to be scientists or engineers, which has to be the best result of all. KS3 Teacher 2015 Science for Schools - Key Stats #5,000+ children and 500+ accompanying adults and teachers 73 schools: catchment area 100mls; London, Bristol and Birmingham 120+ events including 49 workshops and 16 shows 95% of teachers rated content and presenters as excellent or good NEW for 2015: 30 Heads of Science attended our Teacher s Networking Reception discussing STEM careers and Apprenticeships 14 THE TIMES CHELTENHAM SCIENCE FESTIVAL 15
