2 From the President Roger KF5SDE CQ CQ CQ Club Members. The next meeting of the Arkansas Diamond Amateur Radio Club will be October 11, We will meet in the usual place, the OEM office in the old Morrilton Post office at 117 North Division Street. We will have dinner beginning at 5 or 5:30 with the meeting starting at 6:00. I want to encourage everyone to bring any used gear that they are not using to the meeting to sell, trade, and loan or give away. This is an opportunity for our club members to possibly find something they need or for someone to reduce unused equipment in their shack. Mike Martin KC5YWN has agreed to do our program. At our last VE session I learned that Mike made more contacts by himself than we as a club made on Petit Jean Mountain. It occurred to me that he just might know something. Mike has agreed to talk about his ham station and how he got it all set up. I am confident that he can pull us all up the learning curve. Michael has 13,605 lookups on QRZ. His father is a one of our club founders, George Martin KC5RED. The Arkansas Diamond Radio Club (KE5FSY) of Morrilton News Letter This bulletin is published 4 times a year for the promotion of HAM radio. 3 Community Service in the Dark Woods of Arkansas by the Caren Club in Little Rock by KD5LBE Ham Radio has as one of its major tenant s public service and that can come in service in natural disasters like hurricanes or in public service events. This week end I had the privilege of helping with the Little Rock Ham Radio Club, Caren Club, working with Arkansas Travelers AT100 hundred mile race through the Ouachita Natural Forest. It is a race sponsored by the Arkansas Ultra Runners Association of 50 miles out and 50 miles back along gravel roads and trails in all kinds of terrain. It starts at 6AM Saturday and ends 12 noon Sunday. The Caren Club supplies communication to the Runners Association and is backup checking to make sure runners aren t lost in the woods somewhere. There is either no cell phone service or spotty service and almost no service at night so enter the Caren repeater at which was our communication link. There were 15 control points along the trail at various points supplying food and help as needed and there was a Ham link at every station. Of the 151 runners that started 98 finished. Before I go any further, the administration of the run by the Association and the Caren Club was excellent. No runner was going to be left behind. My link to the run was Jim Grinder, N5TSG, who asked me if I would help and I said I would. Our group included besides Grinder, Lynn McCaig, N5RWW, and Larry Rathjen, KJ5HA, and myself KD5LBE. Our station was identified as Pig Tail. South of us was Club Flamingo and north was Lake Winona. We were located on a dead end road, so the only traffic were the Park Rangers and the people who thought they could drive through when we told them they couldn t. We smile as they came back. There were 3 Hams full time at our station and another that came Saturday during daylight. Grinder, N5TSG, had cut out a location the day before so we could set up camp and had come to be sure no one would take our location. All communication was done on the 94 Caren repeater through a control operator. Most of the radio operators work the same locations year in and year out. There was almost a party atmosphere at our location since everyone knew each other and I was the newcomer. Grinder is a believer in minimum power and had a unique way of setting up. You have to remember you have to stay on the air for, in our case for 24 hours. The HTs that we were using were cross banded. We talked on with a tone and his truck transmitted out on 94 with only 5 watts. His dual band VHF/UHF antenna was up maybe 30 feet in the air. The set up worked really well even when I went up about a mile down the road looking for a lost runner. Before I go on to Ham radio lessons learned, this was the second fastest race run at 17:23. The second runner in the 2016 race was more than an hour behind. Westly Hunt was the winner and has been the winner in the last two and a close second in the one before that. Carla and Mike Branch were our Pig Trail bosses. There were two finishers from Japan. We kept track of the runners by number that came through and reported them passing. The control operator made sure each number passed through each of the 15 stations in order. If a person at the end of the run came Club Flamingo but didn t make it to the Pig Trail we had to find them. That in fact happened to us and using the N5TSG radio system, I was able to help the old man get some help a mile back up the road. Remember the gentleman had completed 70 miles which is a pretty good accomplishment. Dark Night has a whole different meaning in the forest without a moon. Ham lessons learned. My Yaesu VX-8 is a great radio but fully charged it is only good for about 8 hours and the 24 hours is a lot longer even if you are just receiving and if you are using it to transmit it will last a lot less and night is longer than 8 hours. If you are going to be out more than 8 hours you may need to carry two or three HTs if they don t have replaceable batteries. Grinder has some Kenwood TH79A HT that run on AA batteries. If you have a radio that runs on replaceable batteries you may need only 2 radios and the second only if something should happen to the first. He buys his on Ebay. Don t assume that you can hit the same repeaters in the forest that you can hit in your town, or that you can hit at night that you hit during the day. Verify your repeaters before you really need them. Carry the manual for your radios with you unless you have memorized them word for word. Lynn, N5RWW, had the manual and reprogrammed my radio.

4 If you going to work at night, carry at least three flashlights and a head lamp and replacement batteries. Put them in your pocket while the sun shines. At least in Arkansas, don t expect your cell phone to be anything more than a extra flash light if the name of the place your going ends in Forest. As the communication specialist, even if you are president of you own company, today you are there to serve whoever is in charge and your job is communications and what ever the boss tells you to do. If you are going to a 30 hour race find a chair that you could sit in for 30 hours. (My chair broke with me in it.) Carry your own bathroom paper and carry something to carry the used paper out don t expect a clean bathroom. We leave every place cleaner than we found it. If a local tells you don t go there don t go there. If it is Field Day or a public service event you may or may not be asked to participate by the regulars, so whatever happens enjoy the fun and the companionship. If you keep volunteering for public service events you may find a home and friends for life. Before you are called on to be the boss you need to start in the mail room. Oh yes, before you go out on any Ham adventure be sure to have a plan and a check list and food and water. I didn t and I got very cold and I had on two sweat shirts and a blanket and liked to have froze to death, one radio with a dead battery, and chair that said enough. I m going back next year for sure. The dog was only going for 50 miles and his friend for the full 100. Route map if you can follow it. The route was marked with little flags hanging on trees. The winner was Wesley Hunt for 100 miles his time was 17:23:33 hours. He has made it to the half way point (50 miles) and is on his way back (36.1 miles) in this picture to go. He barley stopped on his way back and didn t stop going out. Here is to those that tried, finished or not, to those that run races like the Boston Marathon they couldn t even begin to comthey ran off into the night with only 36.1 miles to pete and to those who serviced the runners go with a flash light and a prayer to lead their way. for up to 30 straight hours.

5 RETIREMENT From Dale Temple, W5RXU My current term as Arkansas Section Manager ends April 1, I have decided to retire as Arkansas Section Manager then. I will be 79 next January and I can no longer do what I once could. So, I think it is time to retire. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support, help and friendship during my terms as Arkansas Section Manager. I urge all of you to help the new Section Manager and his or her appointments as they transition to the new leadership. I will urge the new Section Manager to favorably consider all of the present Section Leadership to remain in place and urge all of you to assist him or her. Again, thank you all. 73 Dale Dale has visited us on our Field Day exercise on the Mountain. He has been a leader in 19 Ham organizations and our Section Leader since 2011 and an Elmer to many. He personifies what being a Ham means, for community involvement. Club Memberships For all of you that are members of the Diamond Club we appreciate your membership, but let me suggest that you consider joining at least one additional club. Easy clubs to join beside the Diamond Club are if you live west of Morrilton the Russelville club. If you live in Morrilton or East consider joining the Faulkner County club with the repeater with tone or the Caren club with the repeater. The Faulkner County net is on Thursday at 7:30. Faulkner County is always coming up with another public service project. It is your chance to do something with you license besides hanging it on the wall. Prizes and Prizes and Prizes Come to Petit Jean Mountain Saturday 10/8/2016 and you could take home some really great prizes.
