48 New VLF Data Server Received in November, 2009 from Dell. Features 3 servers (1 per rack), each with 15 1-TB hard disks, for a total of 540 TB raw storage. In each enclosure, 14 disks are arranged in a redundant array, and one disk is a spare. With redundancy and file system overhead, we end up with 387 TB effective storage. Data server brings unprecedented capabilities to VLF group. In past, for long data sets, needed to copy dozens or hundreds of DVDs to workstation hard drive. Often there simply wasn't enough space.
