1 HI-Q Thunder Bay, Ontario Volume 84 Issue 6 Field Day 2018: June The following information is courtesy of the American Radio Relay League and RAC ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, more than 40,000 Radio Amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Field Day is a picnic, a campout, practise for emergencies, an informal contest and, most of all, FUN! It is a time where many aspects of Amateur Radio come together to highlight our many roles. While some will treat it as a contest, other groups use the opportunity to practise their emergency response capabilities. It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate Amateur Radio to the organizations that Amateur Radio might serve in an emergency, as well as the general public. For many clubs, ARRL Field Day is one of the highlights of their annual calendar. The contest part is simply to contact as many other stations as possible and to learn to operate our radio gear in abnormal situations and less than optimal conditions. We use these same skills when we help with events such as marathons and bike-a-thons; fundraisers such as walk-a-thons; celebrations such as parades; and exhibits at fairs, malls and museums these are all large, preplanned, non-emergency activities. But despite the development of very complex, modern communications systems or maybe because they ARE so complex Amateur Radio has been called into action again and again to provide communications in crises when it really matters. Radio Amateurs are well known for our communications support in real disaster and post-disaster situations. And in Thunder Bay the location is the back yard at 2174 Rosslyn Road, same spot as last year only greener and longer grass. The potluck dinner will be at 6 pm on Saturday. The LARC will supply the dinner meat. Please bring something to share and if you are not sure of what to bring, or call me and I will try to help out. You are welcome to supply anything that you wish to cook if you prefer hamburgers or hot dogs etc. If it not raining, I will have a fire burning for the evening. We will be running battery power again and I have 5 batteries for use and a couple of spares if needed. I would like to ask that anyone that can offer some help to set up on Friday, let me know and we will get things organized after 6:30 pm on Friday. I will be renting a portapotty for your use. Online petition about radio interference Radio Amateurs in Quebec have told us of a petition involving a radio station that is generating interference on purpose. While we have not had a chance to investigate the specific details of the incidents the petition refers to we agree with the importance of acting to support the security of high frequency communications.
