2 RADAR Rowing Athlete Development And Ranking. BACKGROUND RADAR was originally developed by Rowing BC under the title BC RADAR. Rowing Canada Aviron has since adopted this program, and in conjunction with Rowing BC, Row Ontario, and the Canadian Sport Centres, has streamlined and evolved the program to a level that can be utilized in RCA s Development Systems and delivered Canada wide. WHAT IS RADAR? RADAR is a program established to identify, track and monitor athletes. Quite simply, RADAR is a battery of tests that provides a simple strength and weakness assessment of the specific fitness traits required by rowers. This battery of tests is achieved without the need to undertake laboratory tests or time out from the routine training environment. RADAR testing has the ability to highlight changes that are expected to occur in a rower s fitness throughout the year based on periodized training. Most importantly, the rower and coach are able to immediately assess their progress as well as the effectiveness of their current training program. This data can be used to benchmark the athlete against traits that are believed to be Gold Medal standard at World Championships and Olympic Games. RADAR is used by RCA, It s National Development Centres, Talent Development Centres and coaching staff to create an integrated pathway for athlete development in Canada. HOW IT WORKS RADAR uses RCA s Ergometer Performance Targets* and on water assessment (compared to RCA s Gold Medal Standards) as the base of assigning a RADAR score. * See RCA s Ergometer Performance Targets document Athletes accumulate points for each test in the RADAR battery of tests. These scores are totalled to create the athlete s RADAR Score. RCA has established levels of performance for each test and aligned them within its High Performance System. The results are targeted standards for the Talent Development Centres, National Development Centres, and National Training Centres. These targets are based on physiological and technical markers that a balanced athlete should be able to achieve for each performance level. Athletes interested in being involved in the High Performance system should be using these performance standards as a guide to what their performance levels should be for each test and the centre they are striving to be aligned with. The following are the Identified performance levels within the HP System and the corresponding RADAR score required to be part of the programs related to these stages. 3 SCORING SYSTEM Each Test / Performance Indicator in the RADAR program is assigned a maximum number of points available to the athlete. Scoring is assigned on a sliding scale up to the maximum points available. Where an athlete s test result lands on this scale determines the score they receive for that specific test. GMS 6k 2k 60 min 1 min PP (TDF) PP (MDF) Target NTC NDC TDC CE DATA COLLECTION Once athletes have complete their RADAR assessment they will then need to enter it into RCA s DATA-Base. Athletes will log onto the Rowing Canada DATA-Base through the RCA website. Once in their pre-established athlete page the information can be entered and stored on the DATA Base. The system is designed to take the results provided by a coach or athlete, assign the appropriate RADAR score to each test as well as determine a combined score for all the tests. Once the RADAR submission date has passed all the results will be reviewed and athletes who have achieved identified performance levels will be assigned the appropriate status within the system. RCA s coaching staff will then use this data to base decisions on regarding invitation to training and selection camps.

4 Appendix A: The following are samples of how the RADAR scoring system works Ergometer based scoring. The attached graph outlines the scoring scale for Junior Mens 2000m ergometer tests. Each blue marker represents the wattage output and the RADAR score assigned to each level identified within the RCA High Performance System. If a Junior Male athlete pulls 6:18.8 for a 2000m test. This converts to an average of 412 watts. Based on where this wattage output falls on the scoring scale (shown below), the athlete would also receive a ~95 points towards their RADAR score. The above would be completed for all ergometer based scores. (scoring for each level differs from test to test)

5 Sample of on water based scoring The attached graph outlines the scoring scale for Junior Mens 2000m on water assessment in a 1x. Each blue marker represents the wattage output and the RADAR score assigned to each level identified within the RCA High Performance System. If a Junior Male athlete completes the 2000m time trial in 7:33.5 this converts aprox 240 watts. Based on where this Wattage falls on the scoring scale (shown below), the athlete would receive ~90 points towards their RADAR score.
