1 Contest Overview, Rules & Guidelines OVERVIEW The Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge presented by US Airways is a competition designed to enhance the knowledge of space exploration and technology. Each team will be responsible for creating a physical scale model and written report of an International Lunar Base. The International Lunar Base must accommodate a crew of up to 50 people for two years. The primary purpose of the base is to provide a mining site and structure to use as an energy source for Earth. Items to consider are mining, processing and storing of Helium 3. In addition to providing fuel that can be used as a primary energy source on Earth, students will also have a secondary mission. The ability to precisely determine the location of vehicles and individual astronauts on foot as they move about the lunar surface will be essential to expand man s presence on the Moon, and it will serve as a model for providing this capability as man moves on to asteroids and to Mars. Students should describe a lunar positioning system design that can address how to do accurate 2 dimensional positioning in a 100 mile radius around the base camp. Please include drawings and a description of the proposed solution. Students should consider how the system would continue to function with a single equipment failure. Understanding the capabilities and limitations of terrestrial navigation and positioning systems will likely be useful in the design process, but students need to consider the unique aspects of the lunar environment as well. The following information is intended to guide students in the preparation of their entry. All information should be included in a written report that accompanies the physical model. The primary focus of the preliminary competition will be the physical model and written report. The final competition will focus on an oral presentation given by each of the six finalist teams. Each team should have the following at the Preliminary Competition: Physical Model (must not exceed one (1) meter in any direction) Mission Patch (must not exceed 30 cm) Written Report that contains all information about model and scale drawings. (Many teams will divide their report into different sections i.e. society, scale drawings, etc.) Receipts showing any expenses associated with the project. (NOTE: there is a $50 limit on spending, and use of computers, mobile devices, etc. are not allowed.) A presentation or display board CONTEST RULES & GUIDELINES All teams must read and agree to the rules and guidelines listed below. All teams must submit a complete application packet no later than Friday, November 15, Teams must consist of three to five students in 5th through 8th grade. Each team must have one adult sponsor to serve as the team coach and coaches may submit as many teams as they would like. Entries will be judged based on the following areas: PRELIMINARIES Physical Presentation Base Design Requirements Physiological Factors Society Primary Mission Secondary Mission Lunar Base written presentation FINALS 10-Minute Oral Presentation

Entry must include the creation of a Mission Patch and name for the Lunar Base. The Mission Patch may be smaller than, but cannot exceed 30-centimeters in diameter. Students must include a display or presentation board with their project. All written material and drawings used to support your entry must be made in hard copy. No electronic submissions are accepted under any circumstances. Material copied from a source must be surrounded in double quotes ( ) and the source indicated. For example: This is material copied from another source, My Favorite Space Station Book. The use of electrical power is not permitted at the preliminary or final competition. The use of computers, mobile devices, etc. is not permitted at the preliminary or final competition. The event preliminaries will take place on February 3, 4, and 5. Each team will present their project on only one of these days. The two teams with the highest scores in the judging categories from each day will move on to the finals. There will be six finalist teams total. In the event of a tie, both teams will move onto the final competition. The final competition location is TBD and will consist of each team delivering a 10-minute oral presentation. Prior to the final presentations, each finalist team s project will be judged on a scale of one to five points. These points will be added to the overall final scores. The team with the highest combined score from the pre-finals judging and the oral presentation score will be the winner. In the event of a tie, the judges will be asked to rank the six finalists. The entry with the greatest combined total score and the highest rank will be announced as the winning entry. Past winning teams are ineligible. All judges decisions are final. Team scores will be available after the final competition. Team rank will not be available.

3 Preliminaries Scoring (200 points possible) The preliminaries will take place on February 3-5, Teams will present on only one of these dates. 200 points are possible in the preliminary competition. The two teams with the highest overall scores from each day will move on to the final competition. There will be six finalist teams total. In the event of a tie, a seventh team will move onto the finals. Final Competition Scoring (36 points possible) The finals location is TBD and will consist of each finalist team delivering a 10-minute oral presentation. Prior to final presentations, each finalist team s project will be judged on a scale of one to five points. These points will be combined with the score from the oral presentation to determine the overall winning entry. The Aerospace Challenge champion will be the team with the highest score at the finals. In the event of a tie, the judges will be asked to rank the six finalists. The entry with the greatest combined total score and the highest rank will be announced as the winning entry. Final scores will be made available after the final competition, however team ranking will not be provided.
