2 µwavelab The Microwave Laboratory (μwavelab) of the University of Calabria is involved in many different research topics. It owns considerable expertise in the design, realization and measurement of microwave and millimeter-wave circuits and antennas. WaveLab is involved in several research projects, in cooperation with ASI, ESA, JPL, DLR as well as with some national companies and associations, to developing and proposing many innovative microstrip antenna configurations. WaveLab manages the following main activities: Near-field measurements over planar, cylindrical and spherical surfaces; Amplitude-only near-field measurements with phase retrieval; Far-field measurements; Microwave components measurements within the range ghz; Electromagnetic diagnostics of materials; Electromagnetic compatibility measurements; Spectral analysis and noise figure; RADAR systems design for environmental monitoring; RFID systems design; Design and manufacturing of microstrip circuits and antennas for microwave and millimeter-waves applications. 1

3 Anechoic Chambers for Near-Field and Far-Field Measurements WaveLab facilities include two anechoic chambers, having size equal to 5mx4mx7m and 2mx2mx3m, respectively, which are adopted to perform far-field and near-field measurements over planar, cylindrical and spherical surfaces. Both chambers are equipped with positioning and data-acquisition systems controlled by dedicated personal computers. 2

4 VNA and Measurements of Microwave Devices μwavelab is equipped with many different Vector Network Analyzers: VNA Anritzu 37225B up to 13GHz; VNA Anritzu 37217C up to 40GHz; VNA Anritzu MS4647Aup to 70GHz; VNA Anritsu ME7808A up to 110GHz; PNA-X Measurement Receiver up to 60GHz (Agilent N5264). A manual Probe-Station with 4 ports is also available for applications up to 67 GHz. The above instrumentations are adopted in many testing applications, such as microwave components characterization, near-field and far-field measurements inside the anechoic chambers. 3

5 Electromagnetic Diagnostics of Materials Measurement services for electromagnetic characterization of powders, solid and liquid materials are currently available at WaveLab. The tests are performed through the use of the following facilities: Dielectric Probe Measurement System - SPEAG model DAK 3.5; Measurement Fixture - Liquid/Powder Cell Setup DAMASKOS - model M07T with two ports. 4

6 Electromagnetic Compatibility Measurements WaveLab is equipped with the instrumentations necessary to perform narrow-band and broad-band electromagnetic field measurements for radio protection, for base stations emissions conformity evaluation and for radio base stations planning and localization. Furthermore, it is possible to perform pre-compliance radiated emissions tests for the conformity evaluation to Electromagnetic Compatibility European Standards of electric/electronics devices. 7 RFID The Microwave Laboratory applies its expertise to the design of printed antennas for the realization of RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification) Tags, i.e. smart labels, which are usually adopted in many applications such as logistics, food traceability, anti-shoplifting, electronic ticketing, etc. Quality, reliability and performance monitoring of RFID systems implementation is performed through the use of the following instrumentations: Impinj Speedway R420 UHF RFID Reader with 4 ports; Brickyard reader antenna for short-range applications (30-45 cm); Mini-Guardrail reader antenna for short-range applications ( 7cm); Far-field antennas for long-range applications. 6

8 RADAR Systems for Environmental Monitoring WaveLab owns specific expertise in RADAR design. It participates to the development and realization of RADAR systems for environmental monitoring, in particular for landslides observation and prevention, in the framework of some European Projects. WaveLab cooperates with the COnsorzio di RIcerca su Sistemi di Telesensori Avanzati (CORISTA), dealing with the design, prototype development and application of advanced sensors for remote sensing. 7

9 WaveLab is fully equipped for the design and fabrication of microstrip/hybrid circuits and antennas, operating up to millimeter frequencies. The prototypes are realized through the use of the following main facilities: Circuit Board Plotter LPKF ProtoMat 93 S; 3D Circuit Board Plotter Blue8 Jewel - Delta Macchine; Microtech Laser Writer LW2004-LR; Single source thermal evaporator; Laminar flow cabinet ASALAIR1200FLV; Spin coater - Calctech; Through-Hole Plating LPKF. 8
