8 ALLIED Wiring Cables satisfy the requirements of the most exacting installation and the needs of contractors for reliable easy to instal and readily available supplies of wiring cables for all types of buildings. ALLIED Wiring Cables are suitable for industrial, domestic, public and coercial buildings, farms and garages. They withstand effects of dempness, building materials, corrosive atmosphere and mechanical damage. ALLIED Wiring Cables are pliable enough to adapt to any configuration of wall surface yet are rigid enough to permit threading through holes or along runs. They are easy to strip and to terminate in wiring fittings or accessories. ALLIED Wiring Cables Provide all round performance, reliability and ease of handling. They are readily available from local branches and depots and users can rely on the technical backing and service of the AC organization. General to metric dimensions comply with the following British Standards and are suitable for all installations conforming to the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Building and the relevant British Standard codes of practice: BS 00 : PVC insulated cables (nonarmoured) for electric power and lighting (metric units) BS 30 : BS 7 : Copper conductors in insulated cables and cores (metric units) PVC insulation and sheath of electric cables (metric units) 7
9 Insulation materials Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) PVC compounds which comply with BS 7. PVC is brightly coloured for identification, is easy to strip and does not support combustion. It has good resistance to chemical attack generally and resists attack by most building materials, but it should not be allowed to remain in permanent contact with oils, greases, fats or creosote, nor with the fumes of substances or solutions used as wood preservant It does not support mould growth and is suitable for used in tropical climates, but cables insulated other than Black PVC, should not be permanently exposed to direct tropical sunlight. PVC gradually hardens as the temperature decreases but recovers its flexibility on returning to normal temperature Operating temperatures Maximum service operating temperatures of 70 C for PVC insulated wiring cables and conduit wires indicate that a normal service life can be expected when the combined ambient temperature and the conductor temperature due to the current does not exceed these figures. PVC compound will withstand occasional overloads of short duration due to fault currents without deterioration. If PVC wiring cables are being installed at temperatures below 0 C, care must be taken not to bend them sharply. It is preferable to keep the cable in a warm place for 2 hours before installation under these condition. Current ratings In normal practice, the recoended current rating as given in the IEE Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Buildings, should be followed. In cases of doubt or in exceptional circumstances, advice should be sought from the Allied technical advisory service. Cable diameters The diameters of the PVC cables given in this publication correspond to the nominal diameters given in BS 00 subject to tolerances allowed. 8
10 Installation Fixing criteria PVC (nonarmoured) wiring cable to metric standards should be installed in accordance with IEE regulations, the following dimensions for fixing criteria being applicable. 16 Current ratings for insulated cables The current ratings quoted in Tables 5 to 7 are generally as detailed in the relevant tables of the IEE Regulations. The head of each table states whether the current ratings relate to close or coarse excesscurrent protection. Where the class of excesscurrent protection differs from that stated in the heading of the table the appropriate rating factor must be applied. Close excesscurrent protection Excesscurrent protection which will operate within four hours at times the designed load current of the circuit which it protects. Devices affording close excesscurrent protection include: (I) BS 88 fuses fitted with fuse links marked to indicate a class P or class Q1 fusing factor. (ii) Fuse fitted with fuselinks complying with BS 131. (iii) Miniature and mouldedcase circuitbreakers comply ing with BS (iv) Circuitbreakers set to operate at an overload not exceeding times the designed load current of circuit. Coarse excesscurrent protection Excesscurrent protection which will not operate within four hours at times the designed load current of the circuit which it protects. Devices affording coarse excess. Current protection include: (i) (ii) BS 88 fuses fitted with fuselinks marked to include a class Q2 or class R fusing factor. Semienclosed (rewirable) fuses complying with BS 303: The IEE Defined conditions of installations The current ratings in the columns of the tables headed Defined conditions apply to cables run under the conditions defined below. For cables spaced by distances less than those described below, the current ratings in the columns headed Clipped direct to a surface... Should be applied. (a) Single core cables (1) Two or three single core cables are installed one above the other, fixed to the vertical surface of a wall or open cable trench as follows, the distance between the wall and the surface of the cable being at least 20 in each instance. Cables in which the conductor crosssectional area does not exceed are installed at a distance between centres of twice the overall diameter of the cable Cables in which the conductor crosssectional area 2 exceeds 185 are installed at a distance between centres of about 90. The ratings for two cables may be applied with safety in instances where such cables are installed in horizontal formation on brackets fixed to a wall, spaced as indicated above or touching throughout (2) Three single core cables are installed in trefoil formation fixed to the vertical surface of a wall or open cable trench, the cables touching throughout and the distance between the wall and the surface of the nearest cable being at least 20, or, alternatively, three single core cables are installed in trefoil formation and laid on a nonmetailic floor, the cables touching each other and the floor throughout. The ratings given apply provided that the sheaths of single core metal sheathed cables are electrically bonded at each end of the run. The cables are assumed to be remote from iron, steel, or ferroconcrete, other than the cable supports. (B) Multicore cables, (1) Cables of all types other than single core cables are installed singly, fixed to the vertical surface of a wall or open cable trench, the distance between the surface of the cable and the wall being at least 20 in every instance. Voltage drop. Voltage drop is normally only of importance for cables of voltage rating not exceeding 50/750 volts. If the installation is to be in compliance with IEE Regulations, it is stipulated that the voltage drop for any particular cable run must be such that the total voltage drop in the circuit of which the cable forms a part does not exceed 2 ½ per cent of the nominal voltage, (i.e. volts for a singlephase 20 volt supply). Values of voltage drop are tabulated for a current of one ampere for a run, i.e. For a distance of 1 m along the route taken by the cables. And represent the result of the voltage drops in all the circuit conductors. For balanced three. Phase ac circuits, the values relate to the line voltage. For any given run the values need to be multiplied by the length of the run (in metres) and by the current (in amperes) that the cables are to carry. Example: Consider a route of 200 metres of cable, to be installed in air and to carry 0 ampere load. The supply voltage being 15 volt 3Ph. 50 Hz. And the cable to be stranded copper PVC/SWA/PVC. Let Vd be the voltage drop in volts Vd= mv x I x L Vd x 00 or: mv= 00 1 x L Where I = Current in amperes L = Route length in metres mv = Approximate volt drop/ampere/metre Maximum permissible volt drop = 2 ½ per cent of 15 volts =. volts Substitute for current, route length and maximum permissible volt drop. x 00 then mv = = 0.52 mv 200 x 0 Where the actual current to be carried differes greatly from the current rating tabulated, the results obtained by multiplying the tabulated voltage drop values in this way are approximate only: for a more accurate assessment, allowance should be made for the change in conductor resistance with operating temperature. It is considered that the most practical approach to the question of voltage drop is to tabulate those values which related to the worst conditions, viz, where the phase angle of the load is equal to that of the cable. However, it should be noted that in many cases knowledge of phase angle of the load is not readily available. For cables up to and 2 including 120 the tabulated voltage drop values apply with sufficient accuracy where the power factor of the load lies between 0. lagging and, and for large cables where the power factor of the load does not exceed lagging. In cases outside this range the tabulated voltage values may be unduly conservative, and more exact calculations should be considered. 15
17 Current rating factors For group of single core cables Referring to Tables 5 and For groups of circuits unenclosed, the single circuit ratings apply provided that: (1) the horizontal clearance between circuits is: (a) not less than six times the overall diameter of an individual cable, and (b) not less than the overall width of an individual circuit, except that the horizontal clearance need not in any case exceed 150 and (2) the vertical clearance between circuits is not less than 150 and (3) if the number of circuits exceeds four, they are installed in a horizontal plane. In all other cases, unless a more precise evaluation of current ratings has been made, based on experimental or calculated data, the following factors are applicable: Number of circuits (pairs of cables, single phase ac or dc) Three cables per circuit, or four where one is the neutral, three phase ac rating factor Three cables per circuit, or four, where one is the neutra, three phase ac Rating factor Not applicable to three phase. For groups of twin and multicore cables Referring to Table 7 For groups of cables unenclosed, the single circuit ratings apply provided that: (1) the horizontal clearance between cables is not less than six times the overall diameter of an individual cable, except that the horizontal clearance need not in any case exceed 150 and (2) the vertical clearance between cables is not less than 150, and (3) if the number of cables exceeds four, they are installed in a horizontal plane. In all other cases, unless a more precise evaluation of current rating has been made, based on experimental work or calculated data, the following factors are applicable: Number of cables Rating factor Number of cables Rating factor
