2 BPS Boat Positioning System with BCM Initial Installation Installing the BCM (Boat Control Module) WARNING!: Always read and follow the operating and safety instructions in the power tool owner s manual and the instructions for use of the hole cutting tool. Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and gloves to protect your hands with no loose garments being worn. Make sure the rear face of the boat cover being drilled is clear of objects. 1. Identify a suitable location for the BCM module allowing for the connection of the PPM control cable to the auxiliary socket of the BCM. Position the BCM on your boat such that it is reasonably horizontal and clear of your RC receiving antenna. (To prevent any possible interference to a 2.4GHz RC system place as far away as possible). 2. Remove the top cover (If the Rx module is accessible through the battery compartment then there may be no need to do so). 3. Identify a suitable position for the cable gland and check the PPM control cable reaches both the BCM and Rx module. 4. Pilot drill the location for the cable gland. Open to Ǿ13mm for the PPM control cable using a suitable boring tool or drill. 5. Pass the PPM control servo connectors through the hole from the external face and push the cable gland (1) into position and tighten down ensuring a good seal (3) (note the nut on the gland needs to be turned anti-clockwise to tighten). Leave the cable clamp nut loose so the cable length to the BCM can be adjusted after the top cover has been refitted. 6. Choose from the following examples of setup options for your boat type, if your boat is different to that shown you can contact SP Tackle customer support by info@sptackle.co.uk for advice. January 2018 Page 2

7 Installing the BPH (Boat Positioning HMI) To install the software onto your Android device first download the attached BPH App apk file sent with your purchase confirmation . Once downloaded install the file, a pop-up window may appear stating Install blocked, simply click on settings and allow Unknown sources and click OK to allow this installation only. Click on INSTALL to finalise the installation process. Open the application and Warning pop-ups will appear stating no compass information exists and storage permissions are required, click Done in both instances to continue, then close the application. To set storage permissions: a) Select the settings menu. b) Select Apps c) Select BPH d) Select Permissions e) Enable storage If using Android version 7.0 or above it may be necessary to setup power management for the BPH application: a) Select the settings menu. b) Select Device Maintenance c) Select Battery d) Select Unmonitored apps e) Select Add apps f) Select BPH g) Press Done On installation of the BPH a folder is created labelled SPTackle on the Android devices internal storage. It will be used to store the calibration data, target locations and other configuration files. These files may be backed up at any time so that target locations are not lost if the Android device is damaged or replaced. It is recommended to change the Screen timeout display settings on your Android device to 10 mins or longer to prevent it closing the application during operation. By placing your Android device in flight mode and re-enabling Bluetooth wireless technology battery life can be extended as the BPS does not require Wi-Fi or a GSM connection. January 2018 Page 7

8 Setting up the Bluetooth Connection to the BCM & optional SSM/SSD Before the system can work the Android device needs to pair to the BCM that is attached to the bait boat. a) Switch on the BCM. h) On your Android device select the settings menu. i) Select the connections menu and select Bluetooth. j) The BCM MAC address will appear in the available devices list. k) Select the BCM to pair (may take upto 5 minutes to complete depending on the Android device). l) Once paired open the BPH application, then open the menu option, see Figure 6 (the menu button location may vary depending on your Android device). m) Open the BPS Setup page and press the Select BCM button. A list of existing paired Bluetooth devices and an option to scan for unpaired devices will be displayed. Selecting your device from the paired devices list will cause the BPH to connect to it over Bluetooth. The BCM serial number will be displayed once selected and the button will change to Deselect BCM. n) Switch off the BCM and close the BPH application. If using a SSM/SSD with the BCM the process will need to be repeated to set up the SSM/SSD but using the Select SSM button. When a SSM/SSD and BCM are both selected in the BPS Setup page then the Android device will automatically connect to the BCM via the SSM/SSD when both are powered on. When the SSM is connected to both the Android device and BCM both LED s on the unit will be on. To revert back to using the BCM without the SSM/SSD deselect the SSM in the BPS Setup page. Press Done to return to the Navigation Screen. The connection status is shown in the top right corner of the screen, When the text is green when the system is ready. When connected the Bluetooth LED on the BCM will be illuminated. The connection can be reset at any time by closing or minimizing the BPH application. The connection will exist when the BPH application is open and will disconnect if it is exited or minimized. In operation this will induce a sleep condition on the BCM and SSM/SSD to conserve power, however once the BPH application is again visible it will automatically continue to attempt to maintain a connection to the BCM and SSM device. The BCM and SSM/SSD will remain as a paired devices and therefore unless unpaired or the app. uninstalled the pairing operation need not be repeated. January 2018 Page 8

9 Powering the BCM Position the power switch in the ON position. The GPS LED will continually flash while the system is acquiring a fix to satellites. It will remain constant when an accurate position has been achieved. NOTE: On first power up after fitting batteries or at the start of your fishing session we recommend to allow at least 10 minutes for the GPS to gather an almanac from the satellites before navigating or recording shore and target locations. The unit is to be left switched on during the fishing session or until batteries require changing to maintain satellite positions and to allow for fast start up when the BPH application is opened. The unit is powered from the boats power during navigation, the 3 x AAA batteries are required to be fitted for the unit s standby condition to maintain satellite positions. Control Configuration Settings Open the BPH application, then open the menu option and enter the Control Setup page and setup for your boat type see figure 4.
