Graupner continuously enhances and updates its products and reserves the right to change its products, technology, user manuals and equipment at any time without prior notice. Periodically check our website, for the most recent updates to the manual and firmware. To maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, you must read and follow this user manual and the safety notes before using the product! NOTE THIS MANUAL IS PART OF THE PRODUCT. 5 Intended use This remote-control system may only be used for the purpose specified by the manufacturer for operation of remote control models without passengers. Any other type of use is impermissible and may damage the system and cause significant property damage and/or personal injury. No warranty or liability is therefore offered for any improper use not covered by these provisions. Read through this entire manual before you attempt to install or use the transmitter. Graupner/SJ constantly works on the development of all products; we reserve the right to change the item, its technology and equipment. Target group The product is not a toy. It is not suitable for children under 14 years. The operation of the mz-4 HoTT transmitter must be performed by experienced modelers. If you do not have sufficient knowledge about dealing with radio-controlled models, please contact an experienced modeler or a model club. Please read this section very carefully before using this product! Check all relevant laws and regulations before using this remote control model. These laws and regulations must be observed in for the safety of yourself and others and may vary by state, region, or country. First-time users: carefully familiarize yourselves with this model s functions and commands. Always exercise caution and operate this model responsibly. To avoid risk of suffocation, keep packaging materials away from babies and small children. Supervision by an experienced adult is required for children, persons mentally or physically handicapped, novices, or anyone not capable of safely using this product. Special liability insurance policies are mandatory for all device operations. If you already own a device, determine if the respective model is covered by your insurance. Protect all equipment from dust, dirt, moisture, vibration and excessive heat or cold. The models may only be operated remotely in normal outside temperatures ranging from 14 to 130 F (-10 C to 55 C). 6 / 16
7 To ensure safe operation, always perform a range test and functional test on the ground before you use your model! Maintain frequent updates of your HoTT components with the latest firmware version. Always use matching, original Graupner plug-in connections of the same design and material. Make sure that all of the plug-in connections are tight. When disconnecting the plug-in connections, do not pull the cables. For additional questions or support, contact the Graupner USA Service Center, or an experienced user. WARNING! Safety notes during the use Rotating propellers can be dangerous. Never touch the turning propellers. This can cause serious injury. To make sure the connected motors cannot accidentally start when programming the transmitter, turn the transmitter s motor off, or detach the propellers. To avoid electrical shock, check the mz-4 HoTT regularly for damages to the housings and cables, especially after a model crashes. Discontinue using any electronic components that have become wet; short-circuiting and shock risk is still prevalent even after components have dried. The propellers must be mounted securely; thrown parts can cause serious injury. Keep long hair, loose clothing such as scarves, loose shirts, etc., away from the propeller. Damage to the propellers may occur and flying debris may cause serious injury. Observe the safety notes of the required components. Note Carefully pack the model and transmitter when transporting to protect from damages and excessive vibration. 7 / 16
8 Transmitter Description Transmitter Control Elements LED 1, yellow light: Motor cut-off display, Model Memory LED 1 on: Motor OFF LED 1 blinks 1x every 2 seconds: Model memory 1 2 LED 2, red light: status and binding display, warnings LED 2 on: bound* LED 2 flashing: not bound 3 Trim - trim and servo travel setting 4 Trim + trim and servo travel setting 5 CUT OFF/BIND: motor cut off, binding 6 Control stick gimbal: with stick switch for model change/throttle limiter 7 Data port: for updates 8 Trigger-switch: throttle travel and functions setting 9 Power switch: down = OFF, up = ON * Acoustic warning: LED 2 flashing with 2x beeps: Model battery under voltage LED 2 flashing with 4x beeps: Transmitter battery under voltage 8 / 16
9 Transmitter Power Supply Installing transmitter batteries Remove the battery case cover on the back of the transmitter. Insert the battery according to the correct polarity. (See figure in the battery case) Removing transmitter batteries If the transmitter is not going to be used for an extended period of time, remove the batteries/accumulators from the device. Batteries stored long-term risk leaking or corrosion. Preparation before use The mz-4 HoTT transmitter comes with three AAA alkaline batteries. The transmitter battery voltage is monitored by the red LED 2 light during operation. If voltage drops below 3.5 V, an acoustic alarm (4x beeps) will sound and the LED 2 red light will blink. Immediately discontinue using the transmitter and replace batteries. Binding the Receiver To bind a receiver with the mz-4 HoTT transmitter, place the receiver in bind mode and/or attach receiver to power supply. Stand at least 1 meter (3 feet) away from receiver. Press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button on the transmitter. Bind is successful when the red LED 2 light stays on. If another receiver is already bound to the model memory, clear the memory before binding the new receiver. To clear the memory, follow the binding instructions twice. The first process erases the previous receiver, the second process binds the new receiver. Binding the Vector Unit GRS Attach the Vector Unit to the power supply. 2. Stand at least 1 meter away from receiver. 3. Press and hold the CUT OFF/ BIND button on the transmitter. Successful binding process The transmitter s red LED 2 light is on. Unsuccessful binding process The transmitter s red LED 2 light flashes. Repeat the binding process until the red LED 2 light stays on. 9 / 16
10 Range Test Switch on the mz-4 HoTT transmitter and receiver. Press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button for 5 seconds. The red LED 2 light will flash twice and emit two beeps: the transmitter range test mode lasts for 90 seconds. Walk about 30ft (10m) from the model and move the stick left and right. It is helpful to have second person stand near the model to verify the model is moving correctly. If the movements are not detected by the model within 30ft, check the model s and transmitter s power supply and perform another range test. Stop the range test at any time by pressing the CUT OFF/BIND button once. The transmitter will emit a beep and a high-pitch tone and the red LED 2 light will stay on. Motor CUT OFF/Motor ON 1 2 CUT OFF/BIND This function turns the motor on and off. Turning off the motor prevents accidental motor starts when not in operation. 1. Move the stick to the lowest position 2. Press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button for 2 seconds. The yellow LED 1 light turns off. 3. The motor is activated. The motor will start when the stick is pushed forward. 4. Press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button again. The yellow LED 1 light turns on. The motor is deactivated. Change Model The mz-4 HoTT has 10 model memories. These model memories are pre-set for Vector Planes. The last digit of the Vector Planes order number indicates the model memory number. For example: No LEO indicates the model memory 1. To switch between model memories, turn the motor OFF. The yellow LED 1 light will turn on. 1. Push and hold the stick down for about 5 seconds. 2. The transmitter will emit 2x beeps. 3. Release the control stick switch. The yellow LED 1 will indicate the model memory by flashing. For example: for model memory 4 the LED will flash 4 times between 3 second pauses. To change the model memory, press the trim buttons (-) or (+). Press and hold the stick down for about 2 seconds. The transmitter will emit 2x beeps confirm the model change. 10 / 16
11 Trigger Switch Each model s memory can be programmed to store optimal settings for ease-of-use. For example: remove throttle limit and increase servo travel, or set up aerobatic figures such as loopings and rolls. All settings are pre-preprogrammed but can be reset by users. To activate the settings, press the trigger-switch on the back of the transmitter. Gimbal Stick Switch The gimbal stick switch is activated by pushing the stick down. This switch is used to set up the transmitter. Setting Channel 2 Trim To set the trim, place the stick in neutral position, or within 80% of the left and right travel area. Adjust the trim to the left or right by pressing the appropriate trim button (-) or (+). 80% 80% Setting Channel 2 Servo Travel To seperately set the right and left servo travel of Channel 2, press and hold the stick switch down to program the transmitter. +80% +80% 1. Move the stick 80% to the right or left of the center neutral position. 2. Adjust the servo travel by increasing or decreasing with the trim buttons (-) or (+). The trigger switch is now set. 11 / 16
12 Setting Channel 1 Throttle Travel To adjust the throttle travel of Channel 1, press the stick switch 2 down to program the transmitter Move the stick forward to the highest position. 2. Push and hold to activate the stick switch. 3. Adjust the throttle travel by increasing or decreasing with the trim buttons (-) or (+). Servo Reverse Channel 2 To reverse the control direction of Channel 2, turn the motor OFF. The yellow LED 1 light will turn on. 1. Simultaniously press and hold both trim buttons (-) and (+) for about 5 seconds. 2. The transmitter will emit two signal tones. Channel 2 is now reversed. 3. To reset, simultaniously press and hold both trim buttons (-) and (+) for about 5 seconds. 4. The transmitter will emit one signal tone. Channel 2 is now back to its original setting. Factory Reset This process will return all settings to the factory preset values and delete all bound receivers. To perform a factory reset: 1. Turn off the transmitter. 2. Simultaniously press and hold the stick and the CUT OFF/BIND button. 3. Turn on the transmitter. 4. The transmitter will emit 3x beeps and the red LED 2 light will rapidly blink five times. The transmitter is back to the default factory presets. 12 / 16
13 Fail Safe In the event of connection interruptions between the transmitter and receiver, the receiver channel settings can be stored and recalled. The HOLD setting will hold the channel at the last valid position. The POSITION setting will move the channel to a precviously programmed position. CH1 = Decrease trim button (-) CH2 = Increase trim button (+) To switch between HOLD and POSITION, simultaniously press and hold the trim buttons (-) and (+). The yellow LED 1 light will flash and signal to indicate the modes: HOLD = 1 beep and four blinks between a 1 second pause POS = 2 beeps and two blinks between a 1 second pause Fail safe settings 1. Turn on the transmitter and model. 2. Turn off the transmitter. 3. Simultaniously press and hold the trim buttons (-) and (+) 4. Turn on the transmitter. 5. The yellow LED 1 blinks once, red LED 2 blinks twice between 1 second pauses. 6. To save, press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button. The the transmitter will beep twice and the yellow LED 1 light will blink twice. "Hold" settings 1. Simultaniously press and hold the trim buttons (-) and (+). 2. Press and hold either trim button to choose which channel will be set to HOLD. CH1 = (-). CH2 = (+). 3. The transmitter will beep once and the yellow LED 1 light will blink four times between a 1 second pause 4. To save, press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button. "Position" setting 1. Simultaniously press and hold the trim buttons (-) and (+). 2. Move the throttle stick to the desired fail safe position. 3. Press and hold either trim button to choose which channel will be set to HOLD. CH1 = (-). CH2 = (+). 4. The transmitter will beep twice and the yellow LED 1 light will blink twice between a 1 second pause 5. To save, press and hold the CUT OFF/BIND button. 13 / 16
