15 KEMET Feature Product KEMET's Flex Crack Mitigation Solutions With design advances in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), has come a new challenge for the design engineer, and that has been a Low IR or short circuit situation due to small cracks close to the end terminations of the ceramic capacitor. This is attributed to board flexing, however, board flex cannot be eliminated by the capacitor manufacturers. KEMET has taken steps to develop a product portfolio that offers the engineer a number of different reliability solutions, should the problem occur. The KEMET Flex mitigation portfolio consists of four solutions which are... Floating Electrode - FE Cap The internal construction diagram (above) shows that the electrodes are configured to form multiple capacitors in series within a single MLCC package. This not only yields improved voltage and ESD performance over standard designs, but also mitigates the risk of low-ir or short-circuit failures that can occur due to board flex. Case sizes available are from 0402 to Open Mode - Fail Open This design greatly reduces the likelihood of a low-ir or short circuit condition in a board flex situation. When flexed to failure KEMET's "Open-Mode" capacitor may experience a drop in capacitance but a short is unlikely because the crack won't typically cross opposing electrodes (this has been confirmed in extensive testing). Since there won't be any current leakage associated with a typical "Open-Mode" flex crack there is no localised heating and, therefore, no chance for a catastrophic and potentially costly failure event. The Open Mode product is available in case sizes. Flex Term - FT Cap The FT-CAP is a surface mount Multilayer ceramic capacitor that incorporates a unique and flexible termination system. Integrated with KEMET s standard termination materials, a conductive epoxy is utilised between the conductive metallisation and nickel barrier finish in order to establish pliability while maintaining terminal strength, solderability and electrical performance. This technology directs board flex stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area. As a result, this termination system mitigates the risk of low-ir or short-circuit failures associated with board flex. Available in case sizes from , the FT Cap offers the greatest range of capacitance and voltage (CV). Floating Electrode and Flex Term - FF Cap Combining two of the technologies above, KEMET will introduce the FF cap, utilising the Floating electrode construction, along with the flexible termination system. The CV offering will be the same as the FE Cap, but the addition of the flexible termination offers the design engineer a much more flex robust and reliable solution for MLCC products. Page 13

16 KEMET Feature Product T528 Series Surface Mount Polymer Tantalum capacitors with face down terminations The new Conductive Polymer T528 Series combines ultra low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and high capacitance in a new package design that offers the lowest ESL (inductance) in the market for this type of product. The initial offerings are targeted for high speed server and microprocessor decoupling - designs that are driving the demand for low inductance chips. The continuous demand for greater capacitance and voltage in smaller case sizes, has caused KEMET to look at alternative construction methods as well as looking at improved materials to deliver what the design engineer is looking for. The T528 series uses a face down termination construction, that increases the volumetric efficiency of the capacitor, and at the same time delivers the lowest inductance levels of any polymer tantalum capacitor on the market. The current cap value offerings range from 68uF to 470uF with voltages from 2.5V to 10V. ESR ratings are as low as 9 milliohms and ESL as low as 0.7nH at 20MHz. KEMET is planning to take this technology to smaller case sizes and larger capacitance values to extend its leadership position in the polymer tantalum product offering. The useable temperature range extends to +155 C while the available T.C.R. reaches as low as +/- 5 ppm/k. An anorganic protection layer in combination with a heat resistant epoxy coating on top of the enhanced NiCr resistive element yield superior moisture stability. The choice of materials enables the use of this product in tough environmental conditions, i.e. high levels of relative moisture and high ambient temperatures. Application examples comprise electrical and electrically powered hydraulic steering aids and engine controllers in the motor compartment of automobiles. 34 Syfer Feature Product High Performance Capacitors Multilayer ceramic chip capacitors are renowned for their reliability but can be vulnerable to cracks when affected by PCB flexing. The resulting damage may not manifest itself immediately, but may ultimately result in field failure. Syfer Technology has introduced a polymer termination to its range of Multilayer Capacitors to permit greater degrees of board bending without damage to capacitors. Cracking problems? The multilayer ceramic chip capacitor is the capacitor of choice for surface mount applications and is one of the most reliable components for surface mount applications. However, it can fail due to fracture as a result of PCB bending. Over time, moisture penetration into the crack can cause a reduction in insulation resistance and eventual dielectric breakdown leading to capacitor failure in service. The bending may be caused by a number of factors, including the insertion of connectors or other components, poor storage, automatic testing or during depanelisation. Stress can also be exerted due to differential expansion when the board is temperature cycled. Land designs and the position of the capacitor on the board are also factors that the user needs to take into account. Stress fractures may not always be evident during the board assembly process. Sometimes it may be the end customer who finds out - when the equipment fails! FlexiCap TM the solution FlexiCap TM has been developed as a result of listening to customers experiences of stress damage to MLCCs from many manufacturers, often caused by variations in the customers production processes. Our answer is a proprietary flexible epoxy polymer termination material, that is applied to the device under the usual nickel barrier finish. FlexiCap will TM accommodate a greater degree of board bending than conventional capacitors and hence reduce the incidence of cracking. The benefit to the user is to facilitate a wider process window, giving a greater safety margin and substantially reducing the typical root causes of mechanical stress cracking. FlexiCap may be soldered using conventional wave or reflow TM solder techniques and needs no adjustment to equipment or current processes. 44 Tyco Electronics / Raychem Circuit Protection Products Feature Product PolyZen Micro Assembly Tyco Electronics has introduced its Raychem Circuit Protection PolyZen polymer enhanced, precision Zener diode micro-assembly. Designed to meet the growing need for overcurrent and overvoltage protection on portable equipment that utilises barrel jacks for DC power input, the PolyZen device helps protect sensitive electronics from damage caused by inductive voltage spikes, voltage transients, incorrect power supplies and reverse bias. The new PolyZen device helps provide coordinated protection with a component that protects like a Zener diode, but is capable of withstanding very high power fault conditions. The PolyZen microassembly incorporates a stable Zener diode for precise voltage clamping and a resistively non-linear, polymer positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) layer that responds to either diode heating or overcurrent events by transitioning from a low to high resistance state. The RoHS-compliant device offers power handling on an order of 100 watts in a 4mm package and helps provide DC power port protection for portable electronics and systems using barrel jacks for power input, as well as internal overvoltage protection and transient suppression. PolyZen devices help provide resettable protection against multi-watt fault events and requires only 0.7W power dissipation. In the event of sustained high power conditions, the PPTC element of the device trips to limit current and generate voltage drop. This functionality helps protect both the Zener and the follow-on electronics, effectively increasing the diode's power handling capacity.
