9 EASYLAN 1. Introduction and safety provisions 1. Introduction and safety provisions 1.1 Introduction Easylan tester is designed for technical certifications of Local Area Networks. It performs all the tests required in compliance with: Cabling standards: ISO 11801, EN 50173, TIA/EIA 568 and AS/NZS. LAN standards such as Ethernet, Token-ring, ATM. Easylan also checks cabling system conformity up to Category 6 and then meets the Publication EIA/TIA TSB67, level III which is the most difficult regarding the measurement uncertainties. This manual has been written to configure and use the unit immediately. Nevertheless, reading the following paragraph containing the safety provisions is compulsory before using the unit. 1.2 Safety provisions In accordance with safety standards The unit is constructed and tested according to the safety rules for electronic measuring instruments. This instruction manual contains information and advice that operators must follow to be protected against electrical shocks and to ensure the reliability of the unit in order to maintain it in a satisfactory state with regard to safety. The unit may occasionally be exposed to temperatures between - 10 C and + 55 C without its safety features being compromised Following instructions supplied with the accompanying documents The unit is constructed to operate under safety conditions if the instructions supplied in the accompanying documents are followed. Any usage, except those described, may reduce the safety of the operator and then, becomes dangerous and prohibited Taking measurements The unit is constructed in such a way that voltages generated are below 50 VDC. So, there is no danger when operating the unit. Before connecting the unit to a wiring, the operator must be sure, by performing a measurement, that there are no spurious voltages present on the wiring. If there are some, the operator must eliminate them before any handling by using all the care required which depends on the measured level. Chapter 1 - page 7

10 To avoid any electrical shocks, follow the precautions below: Always use measurement cables in good condition. During spurious voltage measurement: - never perform connection on the measuring and remote units, - keep hands away from metallic parts (shielding of terminals, RS 232 output, and charger terminal...), - never connect or disconnect the changer, - never use the RS 232 output Faults and abnormal constraints Should there be any indication that the protection of the unit has been compromised, it should be switched off and steps taken to prevent it being used inadvertently. The protections may have being compromised in the following cases, for example: The unit is obviously damaged. The unit is no longer capable of taking accurate measurements. The unit has been stored under unfavorable conditions. The unit has been subject to severe stresses during transport Definitions Definition of the installation category This is also called overvoltage category. It's the installation classification according to standardized limits for transient overvoltages (IEC Publication 664). CAT II: Equipment of overvoltage category II is energy-consuming equipment to be supplied from the fixed installation. 11 EASYLAN 1. Introduction and safety provisions Maintenance Before the casing is opened, make sure that all the wires have been disconnected from the unit. The unit should not be opened up for adjustment, maintenance or repair when live unless this is absolutely essential, in which case this work should be carried out only by qualified personnel advised of the risk entailed. After a maintenance operation: The unit should be reassembled as explained in the instruction manual. Any incomplete or bad reassemble may be dangerous for the safety of the operator. The responsible body must check at regular time interval that all the components ensuring safety are not subject to wear and undertake all the necessary steps for preventive operations. 13 EASYLAN 2. Receiving the unit and description 2. Receiving the unit and description 2.1 Reception Unpacking Easylan is mechanically and electrically checked before dispatch. All precautions have been taken to ensure that it reaches the operator undamaged. Nevertheless, it is advisable to carry out a quick check for any damages that may have occurred in transit. If any such damage is found, it should be reported to the shipper Return If the unit is to be returned, the original packaging should be used and a note explaining as clearly as possible the reasons for returning it should be included. To move horizontally to program a parameter or edit a data for a site, using the and keys. 17 EASYLAN 2. Receiving the unit and description Using the alphanumeric keypad To edit alphanumeric data, use the keypad keys ( ) as well as the navigator keys ( ) and. To insert a space, press the key twice. Quick successive pressing on a same key gives access to the other characters of the key. The cursor switches automatically to the next character, one second after the last pressing on the key. To modify data during edition: - Either press on an alphanumeric key: data are completely cleared and replaced by the selected character. - Or press the key from the navigator: the cursor moves one character to the right without clearing data. The cursor position is shown as an underlining bar. As soon as the operator enters the data, the following function keys appear at bottom of the screen: - A a key = Changing from Upper case to lower case. - a A key = Changing from lower case to Upper case. - key = Clears the character located above the cursor. After edition is ended: - Either validate the data by pressing the key (Enter key), - or exit without validation by pressing the key (Escape key). Chapter 2 - page 15

18 2.2.7 Using the headset kit (option) Both measuring and remote units are equipped with a built-in intercom. To allow talking, the measuring and remote units should be: Equipped with headset option. Switched on. Connected to a cable correctly wired. In standby position. Procedure 1. Getting started 3.1 Procedure - From the main menu, select icon using the,,, keys and validate with the key. - The Main Setup screen is prompted: Main setup User: Company: Language: Date Format: Time Format: Unit: S. Smith AOIP English MMDDYYYY 12H ft RESET Parameters to be programmed are as follows: User and Company: User and Company names will appear in the certification report. Language: Choice of the language (French, German, English, Italian and Spanish). Date Format: Programmable in DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY. Time format: Programmable in 24 h (HH:MM:SS) or 12 h (HH:MM:SS.PM/AM). Unit: Programmable in meters or feet when measuring the length. - Press the key to save the main setup. 3.2 Setting date and time From the main setup screen, press the key, then change Date and Time parameters. 20 3.3 Resetting Easylan key deletes all the parameters programmed in the unit as well as all the test records. When pressing this key, the unit asks for confirmation, then: The RESET 1. Deletes all test records from all sites. 2. Resets all parameters of all sites to their default values. 3. Resets the main setup parameters to their default values. 4. Returns to main screen. 3.4 Identifying the measuring and remote units - From the main menu, select icon using the,,, keys and validate with the key. - The Device Identification screen is prompted: Measuring Unit Identification S/N: S Calibration Date: 04/12/2001 Test counter: 32 Software Revision: C.02 Remote Unit Identification Address: 1 S/N: S Calibration Date: 28/06/2001 Software Revision: C.00 CTR 0 UPG MAINT Address Press, as desired, on: to exit from the screen and return to the main screen. CTR 0 Address to reset the test counter to zero. to change the identification address of the remote unit. UPG to upload a software updating in the remote unit. 21 EASYLAN 3. Getting started Test counter The test counter counts the number of autotests. When it reaches 500, the operator is warned, each time Easylan is switched ON, that the test cables must be replaced. After the test cables are changed, the counter may be reset to zero by pressing CTR Remote unit address In case of simultaneous operations with several Easylan, it is advisable to recognize the right remote unit. Address of the remote unit is prompted on the screen when the autotest is completed in order to check that the remote unit found is the expected one. To identify one remote unit among the others, it is then necessary to change its address (Default address: "1"). To do this, press the Address key. Chapter 3 - page 19

23 EASYLAN 4. Site setup 4. Site configuration 4.1 The sites To make test configuration and result processing easier, Easylan uses the sites for managing recording of autotests. Definition: A site groups, in memory, all the measurements performed in a given place with the same specifications. If there are copper cables together with optical cables, 2 sites must be configured. Easylan can store up to autotests and manage 10 sites. Each of the 10 sites is accessible at any time to store autotests, thus enabling to work simultaneously on several sites. 4.2 Selecting the site to be configured The autotests being recorded into the "current site", it is advisable to check that it is correctly selected. - From the main menu, select icon using the,,, keys and validate with the key. - The Site Setup screen is prompted: Note that, in the representation below, the screen has been scrolled down to the end of the indications by pressing the key after "Plug". The Site Setup screen prompts 3 function keys: Copy : Copy the site setup to an empty site which does not contain any record. 24 - : This symbol is prompted when the site already contains autotests. Two alternatives: Either, the tests of all the site plugs are not yet performed and an empty site should Edit be chosen with the symbol available. Or, the site has been tested and the results of the autotests have been downloaded in the Easysoft certification software. So, the contents of this site can be cleared in order to create another one at the same place. - : Empty the site records (the function key is not prompted if the site is empty). 4.3 Configuring a site Refer to paragraph 4.4 "Helping instructions for configuring a site". Before configuring a site, it is compulsory to perfectly know all the parameters needed to its certification: - The generic standard or the network type. - The category, standard class or network type as well as the setting (PERMANENT, LINK or CHANNEL) with which the site is to be controlled. - The connection mode, RJ45 or other. - The type of the cable used (UTP, FTP, STP, and SSTP) together with its impedance (100 Ω or 120 Ω). - The cable NVP. - Its manufacturer reference to note it on the line provided to this purpose. Press Edit. Site setup The Site setup screen prompts 3 function keys: - : All the site parameters are reset to default values. - NVP.Cal : To get the best accuracy when measuring the length, the operator can measure the NVP (Nominal Velocity Propagation), see paragraph : Save the site setup Site parameters Name: The name of the site is limited to 15 characters: Default name:. As there are many standards and networks types, the edition is done over 2 lines: - On the standard line, we find the generic names, such as: ISO 11801, EN 50173, NETWORK, etc. - On the level line, we find categories, classes, network names and standards defined on the "standard" line. Standard: Depending on the standard used, the measurements to be performed and the test validation criteria are quite different. Without Customer specifications, we suggest you to use the ISO standard adapted to the cable category, the link and network type for which the cabling system is provided. Standard line selection ISO11801 ISO11801 (Old) EN TIA/EIA 568 AS/NZS NETWORK OPTICAL NONE To perform tests up to 300 MHz, without any limits that could penalize the autotest, select the standard labeled "NONE" where there is no limit. 26 Level: Depending on the category or class (CAT6 + or CL E +), sign "+" indicates that the test is performed up to 300 MHz; the standard limit does not exceed 250 MHz. PL = Permanent Link type. CH = Channel Link type. BL = Basic Link type. LK = Link type. 2P = 2-pair wiring. NORL = Tests without Return Loss measurement. The * sign indicates that the standards are in state of a draft awaiting for an official publication. 27 EASYLAN 4. Site setup IConnt: Depending on the plugs used (RJ45 plug or module plug) and on the connection between plugs, many types of interconnection are available. The operator must select, from the list, the interconnection corresponding to his/her installation. Default interconnection: RJ45 RJ45. Optical fibers according to their: - Type (monomode or multimode). The NVP or Nominal Velocity Propagation is expressed in % of the velocity of light. When selecting a cable from the Manufacturer cables, the cable reference must meet exactly that indicated in the unit. NVP (Nominal Velocity Propagation): If the cable NVP displayed is not suitable, the cable can be configured with another value: - Either, by editing a new value using the keypad. - Or, pressing the NVP.Cal key, see the procedure below NVP measurement procedure - Connect the RJ45 measurement cable or the BNC adapter depending on the cabling system type. - Then, connect a cable of known length (32.81 ft as a minimum). NVP.Cal - Press, edit the cable length (do not add the length of the RJ45 measurement cable) and validate with. - The setup screen is displayed again with the new NVP value. 30 4.4 Helping instructions for configuring a site A site is defined as a Local Area Network or part of a Local Area Network where all the parameters are similar. When a site is configured and that the test of a plug has been realized, it cannot be modified, except: - If the measurements already performed are saved in the certification software on PC, and that the measurements are cleared from the Easylan, - If the tests in memory are cleared without backup. Modifying a site implies to clear records already performed and to save them before if required, using the certification software Easysoft. 5.1 Easylan intercalibration The measuring and remote units both perform the necessary measurements to ensure a maximum accuracy. Easylan must be intercalibrated at least every 24 h. Procedure Connect the measuring unit and the remote unit together with the intercalibration cord ATL 302. From the main screen, select icon using the,, keys, then validate with. 34 5.3 Performing autotests The autotests can be performed at any time by pressing the key. The measuring unit checks that there are no spurious voltages and runs all the tests. When the autotest is completed, the measuring unit displays PASS or FAIL, sounds a short beep (pass) or a long beep (fail) and displays the results of each test. It will be automatically incremented of one unit each time a new record is performed. The operator can define his/her own plug identification. The prefix may contain from 0 to 11 characters on condition to end the plug identification with 1 to 4 figures. Example B1P1pr0001 will give B1P1pr0002 up to B1P1pr9999. If the prefix is changed without changing the 4 counter numbers, i.e., for example changing from B1P1pr0246 to CEF4op0246, the following plug will be CEF4op0247. Of course, a plug identification such as 01, 02, etc can be quite sufficient. Then validate with the key. To exit from the screen, press the asks for confirmation (yes or no). key. Autotest 5.4 Running an automatic test from the remote unit If the wiring of a link is correct and that the communication pair ends to the pair expected by the measuring unit, the test runs as soon as the remote unit is connected to the link. This procedure increases the test rate in case there is only one operator. Procedure Switch the measuring unit ON and connect it. Run the autotest by pressing the key. The measuring unit checks the spurious voltages, attempts to communicate with the remote unit, sounds an audible warning (beep) and displays "Remote unit not found. Searching for the remote. ". Connect the remote unit to the other end of the link. The test starts. 5.5 Immediate stop of the autotest 1. If a voltage is present between the wires of the remote unit communication pair (such as central office battery for example), the LED blinks and the test stops. 2. If the measuring unit detects a voltage higher than the programmed limit (refer to chapter 4 "Site Setup "), the test stops and the measuring unit displays the results of the spurious voltage test. 3. The x-axis is the distance in feet from the measuring unit or the remote unit depending on the case. By moving the cursor, the time in ns is displayed. It's the time during which the signal travels distance D represented on the x-axis. A peak with an amplitude quite important represents a fault. Here, we can see a peak around D = ft. This indicates that the fault is located at ft from the measuring unit. The measurement cable measuring ft, the fault is in the cable at ft from the RJ45 plug, close to the measuring unit side. The results obtained in the real test described in the previous paragraph are as follows. 55 EASYLAN 6 Expert mode We can see three peaks: The first one is located at ft from the measuring unit. It shows a Zc mismatch at level of the RJ45 plug on the measuring unit side. The second one is located at ft from the measuring unit and represents a fault in the cable. This confirms the result previously found when locating faults with NEXT. The third one is located at ft and corresponds to the remote unit position, but not to a fault. The peak having the greater amplitude is the one located at ft. This let us think that the main fault is in the cable. From the remote unit side, we get the following curve: y-axis = Fault amplitude x-axis = Distance in ft Here also, we can see a strong peak located at ft from the remote unit. This confirms the result obtained when locating faults in NEXT. 59 EASYLAN 8. Certification software Easysoft 8. Certification software Easysoft 8.1 Overview The certification software Easysoft is intended to transfer, save and edit to screen or on paper the test results stored into Easylan. The software offers two main operating modes to process the results: Certification mode used to transfer the autotests from one or more sites in view of an installation report. Graphic mode used to display the NEXT/PSNEXT, attenuation, ELFEXT/PSELFEXT, ACR/PSACR, and Return Loss curves as a function of the frequency. 8.2 Minimal configuration required Compatible microcomputer equipped with: Intel Pentium processor or equivalent. Windows 95/98/2000 or NT. 16 Mo of main memory. 15 Mo disk space. Display resolution 640 x 480 as a minimum. An RS 232 serial port available. Easysoft supports serial ports COM1 to COM4 (assuming they are compatible with standard Windows communication drivers; the communication boards must, in particular, support shared interrupt lines). 8.3 Connection to Easylan The PC is connected to Easylan (on the RS 232 connector) by serial interface COM1 to COM4. Important note: If COM3 or COM4 ports are used, the communication boards must support shared interrupt possibilities to avoid conflict with COM1 and COM2 ports. Chapter 8 - page 57

60 8.4 Installation Insert the installation disk in volume A (or B). From the task bar, click on Start, then Run. Type a:\setup (b:\setup) and click OK. The installation starts, follow the indications on the screen. The programs are copied and a program group is created. 8.5 Starting Click twice on Easysoft icon in AOIP Easysoft group. 8.6 Quick setup guide The operating examples following are intended to answer the most common operator questions without reading the manual. Nevertheless, the operator should be familiar with Easylan. For any additional information on Easysoft, consult the software On-line help by pressing F1. We assume, in all cases, that Easysoft is running and that the operator has read on the screen the main application window showing an empty desktop Transferring sites tests stored in the unit and saving them on disk Click. Easysoft searches for the sites available in the unit. Then, it prompts the dialog box Select sites to be transferred which lists the sites. Check the box Save data after transfer. Press Transfer All. Transfer starts. A message box indicates the progression. The software then opens another dialog box asking for the name of the target file. At this time, the operator can select the file directory. Press OK. If the file already exists, the software warns and suggests, either to group the new data to existing data, or to replace them, or to choose another file name. Press the button corresponding to the desired option. Press OK. Chapter 8 - page 58

The transfer starts. A message box indicates the progression. The representation appears in a new window Analyzing the curves Clicking in the curve area with mouse shows a "free" marker". Maintaining the Shift key and left mouse button pressed and dragging the mouse plots a black selection rectangle. When releasing the mouse button, a zoom is performed on the selected area (maximum 100:1 regarding the normal view). The right button of the mouse returns to normal view. Chapter 8 - page 59

Maintenance In view of the necessary precautions and the risks involved, any maintenance operations, apart from those relating to battery pack changing, should be left to qualified personnel. All maintenance operations are described in another manual called "maintenance manual", see paragraph Tests accuracy Measurement cables To warrant maximum accuracy for the measuring unit, the measurement cables should be replaced every 500 autotests. References of the measurement accessories are indicated in paragraphs and The test counter indicates the number of autotests performed and tells the operator that the measurement cables must be changed (see paragraph 3.4.1) Calibration and check To warrant maximum accuracy, Easylan must be calibrated and checked at least once a year. This operation is performed in our works, After-sales Service. 9.2 Battery pack Charge When symbol is displayed on the measuring unit or the LED blinks on the remote unit, the battery should be recharged as soon as possible. Connect the charger jack to the plug located on the side of the measuring unit or remote unit. Connect the charger to the mains making sure that the mains voltage is compatible. Recharging the battery takes 3 h (Battery life: charge/discharge cycles approx.). Chapter 9 - page 61

64 9.2.2 Replacing the battery Sm al tongue Remove the elastomer enclosure from the bottom part. Remove the battery pack by pressing on the lateral small tongues. Replace by a new battery pack (AOIP part number: AN 6010). Put the enclosure back. Charge the battery fully. 9.3 Updating the embedded software Updating the embedded software may be necessary when new test standards are published or when AOIP edits update software. Updating is available on our Web Site: Do not forget to save all the autotests and graphs recorded because updating clears all data stored in Easylan. 1. Copy all updating files in UPG directory located in Easysoft installation directory. 2. Run Easysoft Updating the remote unit 1. Connect the remote unit to the measuring unit using the intercalibration cord. From the measuring unit main screen, select icon and press the key. 2. Disconnect the remote unit from the measuring unit. 3. Connect the remote unit to the PC and to the mains supply block. 4. In Easysoft, click on menu?, then on About Easysoft. 5.
