Car-to-Car Communication by Martin Wunderlich Meysam Haddadi Technology and Application Chair for Communication Technology (ComTec), Faculty of Electrical Engineering / Computer Science
Overview of Car Communication in Europe Broadcasting technologies I2C: RDS/TMC, DAB, DVB Long-Range C2I/I2C: GSM, GPRS/EDGE, UMTS, Wi-Fi C2C: GSM, GPRS/EDGE, UMTS, Wi-Fi Short-Range I2C: DSRC C2C:DSRC In-Vehicle systems Bluetooth, ZigBee 2
Introduction and Motivation Car-to-Car? C2C-Communication is a media that enables the autonomous exchange of data between vehicles. Mission and Objective to create and establish an open European industry standard for Car2Car communication systems based on wireless LAN components and to guarantee European-wide inter-vehicle operability 3
Introduction and Motivation Car-to-Car (C2C) Car-to-Infrastructure (C2I) 4
Application C2C Personal Communication Telephony, music, video, chat, internet C2C Traffic Safety Communication Alarm signals, Emergency call, traffic information C2I Personal Communication Download, parking payment, Location Based Services C2I Traffic Safety Communication Traffic light, traffic sign, traffic information 5
Traffic scenarios and application Information and warning function Communicationbased longitudinal control Co-operative driving manoeuvres 6
Einsatzgebiete 7
Overall structure 8
Characteristical data for a/p Bandwidth: Modulation: Channels: Data Rate: 75MHz ( GHz) QPSK OFDM (with 16 QAM options) 7 channels à 10MHz (optional combinations of 10 and 20MHz) 6 to 27Mbps with 10MHz 6 to 54Mbps with 20MHz 9
Requirements Physical Layer 1000m range forward and backward 100m range sideward Speed up to 250km/h (Doppler effect) Adaptation of transmitting power MAC High priority for safety-relatet application (802.11e) Exclusive frequency Band 10
Application and research programs Activities in Europe - Inter Vehicle Hazard Warning - FleetNet - CarTalk Softnet - PROMOTE-Chauffeur - INVENT VLA -NOW - PReVENT Activities in the USA Activities in Japan 11
Inter Vehicle Hazard Warning A common German France project in the years 2001 and 2002 Aim: Develop a system for Car-to-Car communication to avoid accidents on european highways 869 MHz => low frequency => relative high range up to 1000m Alarm signals are sent as broadcast Special Algorithm to verify if the broadcast is relevant or not (e. g. a bridge) 12
FleetNet Internet on the Road A project running from September 2000 till December 2003 Aim: Develop communication protocols and a platform for multihop car-to-car communication, develop a forwarding- and routingsystem based on the car position Technology: VANET (Vehicle Adhoc Network) Question: Which radio technology fullfills the requirements best? => 3 different systems were analysed 13
FleetNet Internet on the Road UTRA-TDD-Technology multi-channel access time synchronisation 2010 MHz Radar technology 24 GHz IEEE Wireless LAN 14
CarTALK 2000 A project running from September 2001 till July 2004 Technology: Selforganize VANET Aim: Develop a driver-assistence-system based on C2C technology 3 main application cluster: - Information- and Warningsystems - Communication based longitudinal control functions - Cooperative assistance systems (e. g. zip traffic) 15
Softnet A still running project sponsered by the federal state Bayern Aim: Create new routing mechanism for VANETs in heterogen environments Technology: IEEE WiFi Application: Virtual City Portal 16
PROMOTE-Chauffeur A project running from Januar 2000 till May 2003 Aim: Small distance between in line driving trucks and avoid unintentional leaving of the road => Platooning Technology: radio systems using a 5,8GHz band 17
INVENT VLA From June 2001 till May 2005 a group of German companies developed a system called INVENT Verkehrsleitungs-assistent Aims: - Avoid bank-ups - Control traffic on highspeed roads - Reduce stress for driver - Reduce traveltime - Reduce fuel consumption... Technology: Combination of V2V and V2I communication 18
NOW Network on Wheels Another German project, startet in June 2004 and still running Based on Inter-Vehicle Hazard Warning, FleetNet and Softnet the main aim of this project is to solve the remaining problems: - Data-Security in VANET - Antenna-Design for Cars - Developing of Security Services - Specification of position based routing and forwarding protocols - Adaption of existing communication protocols on realistic radio conditions - Realize an european standard... 19
PReVENT An european project running since Februar 2004 Aim: Help to reduce the number of deaths by trafficaccidents Integrated projects: => many subprojects 20
Activities in the USA Since 1999 the FCC (Federal Communication Commission) defined a 75 MHz band at 5,9 Ghz Technology: DSRC Main aims are similar to the european concepts C2C communication is reduced to control and security applications, C2I is not reduced Special aims: - Traffic Signal Violation Warning - Curve Speed Warning - Left Turn Assistant - Emergency Electronic Brake Lights - Pre-Crash Warning - Cooperative Forward Collision Warning - Lane Change Warning - Stop Sign Movement Assistance 21
Activities in Japan Activities since 1996 by Advanced Cruise Assist Highway System Research Association Technology: DSRC Mainly C2I communication Defined aims: - Collusion avoiding with traffic blocks in front of the car - Curve Speed Warning - Lane Change Warning - Left Turn Assistance - Information about the quality of the street... 22
