3 Using the Automated Test Application Setting Up the Test Environment 1 Click the Set Up tab, or click Set Up in the Task Flow pane. 2 Specify the Device Information: WiMedia the device will be tested using the VSA software according the WiMedia PHY Test Specification, version 1.2. Wireless USB the device will be tested using Intel's EVM Tool. Device ID you can enter information about the device under test which will appear on the test report. 3 Select the Input Signal: Live signal lets you capture waveform data from the oscilloscope and save it as MATLAB (*.mat) format if WiMedia is selected or (*.bin) format if Wireless USB is selected. Waveform data saved as MATLAB format is down-converted to reduce the number of points for faster processing by the VSA software. Recorded signal lets you load pre- recorded waveform data saved as waveform file (*.bin), MATLAB file (*.mat), or SDF (*.sdf) file if WiMedia is selected. If Wireless USB is selected, only waveform file (*.bin) format is supported. When WiMedia is selected and a *.bin file is loaded, it is down- converted and saved in MATLAB format so that it can be loaded into the VSA software. 22 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

Using the Automated Test Application 3 Export Waveform lets you save the down- converted waveform in MATLAB format. You can load the exported waveform file externally into the VSA software for debugging purposes. 4 Specify the Test Information: TFC and Data Rate You can select multiple TFC and data rate combinations to run. The sequence will run all the data rate combinations first, then the TFC combinations. For example: TFC = 1, Data Rate = 53.3 TFC = 1, Data Rate = 80 TFC = 2, Data Rate = 53.3 TFC = 2, Data Rate = 80 When you select the Auto detect TFC (available for WiMedia tests only), the rest of the TFC, Data Rate, and Band Group selections are disabled because the software will auto detect this information. You cannot run multiple permutations when Auto detect is selected. When the input signal type selected is Recorded signal, the TFC and Data Rate selections are disabled. Only one input signal file is processed at a time. You still need to set the Band Group and Transmission mode appropriately. Band Group The band group information, the center frequency and frequency span, is needed when down- sampling the data. VSA does not currently auto- detect band group. Transmission mode: Burst Mode Lets you specify whether the transmitted signal is in burst mode. Checking this box enables the Interframe Spacing test. Unchecking this box hides the Interframe Spacing test selection. Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help 23

3 Using the Automated Test Application Oscilloscope Channel Automated Setup Signal Amplitude Time Range (in debug mode only) Sampling Rate (in debug mode only) Trigger Type Trigger Level (in debug mode only) Trigger Sensitivity Select the oscilloscope channel used to capture the waveform. Select "Fully Automated" if you wish the software to automatically set up the oscilloscope and capture the data packets. The horizontal and vertical scale and trigger level are determined based on the time range and signal amplitude provided. The horizontal, vertical scale, and trigger level are determined based on the time range and signal amplitude provided. Select "Manual" if you wish the set up the oscilloscope manually to capture the data packets. Once the oscilloscope has been set up, the software will digitize and save the waveform. Select or enter the estimated amplitude of the signal to capture. This is used to set the vertical scale of the oscilloscope. In Compliance mode, the default time range is set to 150 us to capture at least two packets of 96 symbols payload. However, in Debug mode, you can select or enter the time range used when capturing the waveform. This is for cases where the device transmits payload lengths other than 96 symbols. In Compliance mode, the sampling rate is set to 20 Gsa/s for band groups 1 and 2 and 40 Gsa/s for band groups 3 and above. However, in Debug mode you can select the sampling rate to use. Select the trigger condition to use: Select "Zone Qualify trigger" to use the Zone Qualify in Infiniiscan to capture a data packet of at least 96 symbols length. Select "Edge trigger" to use a simple edge triggering to capture packets of any length. Select "Auto sweep" to change trigger sweep to "Auto" to trigger on anything. This is for band groups > 4 (above 7 GHz). NOTE: For Band Groups 3 and above, the trigger will automatically be set to "Auto sweep". This is because the oscilloscope trigger does not work above 7 GHz. In Compliance mode, the trigger level is automatically determined based on the measured input signal. However, in Debug mode you can manually set the trigger level in case the automatically determined trigger level is incorrect. Select the trigger sensitivity. NOTE: For Band Groups 3 and above, the trigger sensitivity is automatically set to "High". 28 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

Using the Automated Test Application 3 Number of averages (for WiMedia tests only) Power Level Select the number of averages to take for EVM measurements in the WiMedia test group. The software will acquire the number of acquisitions based on this value and analyze each acquisition to get the EVM. The reported EVM will be an average of all these acquisitions. Select the type of power level being tested. If power level is fixed, the software will only adjust the horizontal and vertical scales of the oscilloscope each time the TFC changes or a new test is run. The oscilloscope settings remain the same for each data rate. However, if the power level varies, the software will adjust the horizontal and vertical scales of the oscilloscope each time the TFC or data rate changes. 30 3 Using the Automated Test Application Connecting the Oscilloscope to the DUT 1 Click the Connect tab, or click the Connect box in the Task Flow pane. 2 Follow the displayed instructions for connecting the oscilloscope to the device under test. 3 When connections to the device under test have been made, check the I have completed these instructions box. See Also When performing ratiated testing, see: "Guidelines When Using an Antenna (Radiated Testing)" on page 30 When performing conducted testing, see: "Connections for Conducted Testing" on page 35 Next "Running Tests" on page 37 Guidelines When Using an Antenna (Radiated Testing) For Certified Wireless USB testing it is assumed that there may not be any way connect to the device output (conducted testing) or to directly put the device into a test mode. Therefore, the tests have been structured as radiated tests and Loop Back Mode is utilized as a way to cycle the DUT through various TFC's and Data Rates. 30 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

Using the Automated Test Application 3 Figure 1 Loop Back Mode Testing Overview 1 Connect an antenna directly to the input of a UWB amplifier. Connect the output of the amplifier to the oscilloscope via a high bandwidth SMA cable. In some cases, an adapter might be necessary at the oscilloscope front end. 2 Mount the receiving antenna in the test probe holder (to keep its position fixed) and adjust to be orthogonal to the test bench. The DUT antenna also should be positioned orthogonal to the test bench. Place the receiving antenna approximately 5 cm (~2 in) from the DUT antenna. 3 Ensure adequate distance is placed between the associating device's antenna and the DUT. This gives the ability to distinguish DUT signals from those of the associating device. Approximately 1m is sufficient, but the antennas may need to be moved closer for higher data rates. 81 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help A Capturing a Required Waveform Below are the steps to set up the DUT and the oscilloscope to capture the required waveform: 1 Configure the DUT so that it is in loop back mode or continuously transmitting data packets. Set the loop back data rate and packet size to achieve 96 symbol payload size. Example: 53.3 Mbps, packet size, 195 bytes = 96 symbol payload size 200 Mbps, packet size, 745 bytes = 96 symbol payload size 480 Mbps, packet size, 1795 bytes = 96 symbol payload size 2 Select the data rate and size of payload. 3 Connect an antenna to the oscilloscope via a flexible SMA cable, positioned close to the DUT. 4 The test begins by setting the horizontal/vertical ranges of the oscilloscope. The oscilloscope is autoscaled to find the best vertical scale. The software then queries the new vertical scale. If the vertical scale remains at 1V, this means the autoscale failed to find any signal. The vertical scale will then be set using the signal amplitude settings in the Configure tab. If a valid vertical scale is found (<1V), the oscilloscope's horizontal scale will be set to 150 us before re- measuring the signal amplitude. A larger horizontal scale is set to ensure at least one packet is visible when measuring the signal amplitude. The new vertical scale is determined as follows: i Take 10 readings of VPP and burst width and average them. Burst width measurement will ensure signal being measured is not noise but valid packets. If either VPP or burst width are less than 9999 (which means valid values) then set the vertical scale to: A 81

A Capturing a Required Waveform ii Vertical scale = VPP / 7 If either VPP or burst width is more than 9999 (invalid value) increase the vertical scale by double as the signal could be clipped of (which happens if the oscilloscope autoscaled on noise). iii (a) and (b) will be repeated up to two times if failed to set the vertical scale. NOTE The data is demodulated and analyzed in intervals of 96 symbols. To capture a packet containing 96 symbols a time range of at least 50 us is required. 1 Packet = 30 Preamble symbols + 12 header symbols + Payload For a 96 symbols payload, 1 Packet = = 138 symbols Since each symbol is ns long, time range of a packet with payload size of 96 symbols Time range = 138 x ns = 43 us 5 There are three trigger modes: Zone Qualify, Edge, or Auto: To perform WiMedia tests you want to test a data packet (or loopback packet) NOT a beacon packet. Zone Quality triggering is turned on to differentiate a beacon from a data packet. Edge trigger mode performs a simple edge triggering. Auto mode is mostly used for Band Groups 4 and above since the oscilloscope's trigger does not work above 7 GHz. 6 Zone qualify trigger mode: Set the trigger to trigger on a rising edge. In Compliance mode, the trigger level is calculated based on the vertical scale set earlier: Trigger level = vertical scale In Debug mode, the trigger level is set based on your selection for Trigger Level in the Configure Tab. Based on the calculations above, a packet containing 96 symbols or more has a width of at least 43 us. A beacon packet is typically around 20 us. Two zones are created, the width, height, and center coordinates are determined as follows: Zone 1 (must not intersect): Width = 5 us Height = vertical scale * 2 Zone1 Center X-coordinate = -3.5us from trigger Zone1 Center Y-coordinate = vertical scale * 3 Zone 2 (must intersect): Width = 10us Height = vertical scale * 2 82 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

Capturing a Required Waveform A Zone2 Center X-coordinate = 40 us from trigger Zone2 Center Y-coordinate = vertical scale * 2 If a data packet is present, the data packet would intersect with this zone and trigger the oscilloscope. Figure 26 Beacon packet is only 20 us. Should not intersect the zone Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help 83

A Capturing a Required Waveform Figure 27 Data packet is long enough to intersect the zone 7 Edge trigger mode: In Compliance mode, the trigger level is calculated based on the vertical scale set earlier: Trigger level = vertical scale * 1 In Debug mode, the trigger level is set based on your selection for Trigger Level in the Configure Tab. 8 Auto trigger mode: Trigger sweep is set to auto to capture anything. However, to make sure that there is at least one full packet is present, a mask test is used. The oscilloscope will stop acquiring data once the mask is violated. 84 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

A Capturing a Required Waveform Figure 29 Mask violated when a full packet is present NOTE For Band groups 3 and above, the trigger is set to "Auto" with "high" sensitivity because trigger functions only work on signals up to 7 GHz. 9 Sampling rate = 20 Gsa/s for band groups 1-2 and 40 Gsa/s for band groups Memory depth is set using the Time Range value you provide: Memory depth = Time Range * Sample rate 11 Once the oscilloscope detects a trigger, the software proceeds to detect the band group of the signal. WiMedia signals are divided into 6 band groups from 3.16 GHz to GHz band range. Each band has a bandwidth of ~1.6 GHz with the exception of band group 6 which has a bandwidth of 1.1 GHz. The down- converted file is saved into location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Agilent\ Infiniium\Apps\WiMediaWrapperTest\Project\Filename: Input_tfc@x_bps@x_iteration.mat For example: Input_tfc1_bps480_bg1_1.mat Depending on the Number of Averages set in the Configure tab, one waveform file is saved for each iteration. Wireless USB tests: Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help 89

A Capturing a Required Waveform The waveform is saved as *.bin format so that the Intel EVM Tool can process the waveform. Since the EVM tool cannot automatically detect the TFC and data rate of the signal, this information must be provided through the file name. Hence, files are named using the following convention: Devicename_tfc@x_bps@datarate_gss@samplerate.bin For example, a device "phy1" with TFC1, data rate 480 Mbps, captured at a sample rate of 20 Gsa/s should be named: Phy1_tfc1_bps480_gss20.bin The TFC and data rate information is obtained from the settings in the Configure tab. Selecting the wrong TFC and data rate may cause inaccurate analysis. The waveform is saved into location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Agilent\ Infiniium\Apps\WiMediaWrapperTest\Project\ Devicename_tfc@x_bps@datarate_gss@samplerate.bin 90 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help B Loading a Pre-recorded Waveform Below are the steps to load a pre- recorded waveform for testing: 1 Under Input Signal on the Setup tab select "Recorded signal". 2 Then, click on the Browse button to select the file to be tested. The supported formats are Waveform file (*.bin), Matlab (*.mat) and VSA proprietary format (*.sdf). NOTE The contents of the Matlab file must follow the format set by the VSA software. 3 If a waveform file (*.bin) is loaded, the data will be down converted and saved as a Matlab format so that VSA can process the file. VSA currently does not support *.bin format. A 91

B Loading a Pre-recorded Waveform 4 If "Recorded signal" is chosen as the input signal but you do not load any waveform file to test, the following error message appears: Figure 34 Error message when no file loaded 92 Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help

Agilent U7239A WiMedia Wrapper Automated Test Application Online Help C VSA Analysis (for WiMedia Tests) Once a signal is available via live capture or pre- loaded waveform, tests proceed to launch the VSA software. The software checks for the following: Check that VSA version 8.00 and above is present, else exit the test completely. If the oscilloscope already has its own BHB option license, then use the license to launch the VSA application. The VSA GUI will be visible. If the oscilloscope does not have its own BHB option license, then load the embedded license (that comes with WiMedia app) and launch the VSA application. The VSA GUI will not be visible when using embedded license. VSA will be set to run in simulation mode. The waveform file saved earlier or the selected recorded file will be loaded. With the VSA running in simulation mode, other external devices are allowed to communicate with the oscilloscope as opposed to having the VSA poll data directly from the oscilloscope where the VSA will lock the oscilloscope from communicating with other devices. Before setting the VSA to run in simulation mode, the software will save the previous hardware settings. For example, you may have previously set the VSA to connect to a oscilloscope. The oscilloscope address will be saved before changing the VSA to run in simulation mode. The hardware settings will be restored upon exiting the WiMedia Wrapper application; that is, VSA will be reset to point to the oscilloscope address before terminating the VSA application. A 93
