1 WINGSPAN October 2013 Hi Everyone Hopefully you all enjoyed the recent AFL and NRL Grand Finals and have been busy during the cold wet weather finishing of some of those building projects ready for some summer action. Well the winter weather is still with us with a vengeance and hampering our flying activities greatly. In the last month alone we have seen the cancellation of the 4 th round of the Bastille Cup F3F Glider series and last weekend s F3B Glider event so unfortunately no event report this month. Instead I have included at the end of the newsletter an article submitted by Malcolm Campbell of a truly remarkable model builder. Although technically no an RC or glider I thought you would all enjoy the article and perhaps inspire some of you to rethink some of your attention to details when building RC Models. Rep s Corner Now down to business. Sadly I have to report the F3B International event normally held at Milang S.A. has been cancelled. As this event is also the Australian Team selection trial the various peoples involved have been looking for an alternative to next years cancelled event. On the back of the recent growth in F3B in WA and the strong performance at the recent 2013 World F3B Championships, WA may be hosting the event next year in conjunction with our WA F3B Open Event. It is early days yet and a small committee are still working on the proposal. Once it has been confirmed and I have more information we will let everyone know with as much warning as possible. In preparation for the Team Trials you will notice in the Tentative 2014 calendar that the WA F3B Open has been moved to the long weekend at the end of June. So please keep these dates in mind if you are booking holidays etc and if anyone is interested in helping to man bases and run the event please feel free to let either myself or Tim Kullack know. It goes without saying that if this event is secured it will be another big win for RC Gliding in WA and with the Esperance F3F event also being a WC Team selection event just proves that not all the good events go east of the boarder. Well unfortunately I had hoped we would have a finalised calendar for this month s newsletter but further discussion is still needed with the KAMS Committee at their next Club Meeting so stay tuned and we hope to have a finalised 2014 Events Calendar for you all by next months edition of Wingspan if not sooner. In order to help those of you who are looking to book accommodation for next year s events like the annual Esperance F3F event I have included a Tentative Draft Copy of the 2014 calendar below. 2 Crew News - A few weekends ago on the long weekend Danny Hales and I spent the day finishing the turf planting on a new third runway at John Purdue s farm in Margaret River. All 3 runways will now have lush green lawn for us to use and John has finished installing the new double gated entrance to the northern end of the runway so we have a separate fenced accessway right into the field clear of all John s crop fields the homestead. The entry road is about 50m north of the old entry to the farm and if you are planning on flying at the field please use the new entry and remember to keep an eye out for any aircraft traffic RC and Full size that might be using the full size runway. - Rod O Neil and Lori Byway have now launched their new sticker and printing business Katlee Customs based at Perth RC. Please see advert on page 10 for details and exclusive SWA members discount. - Travelling, Ray and Pam Datodi have headed of on another extended holiday. I believe it s over to Europe this time and aren t expected back in the west until early November sometime. Happy and safe travels Ray and Pam. - Don Tester has also taken the opportunity to head over to sunny Hawaii for a few weeks. Firstly as a good brother to support his sister as she competes in the gruelling Hawaiian Iron Man Race. No word yet on how she did but hopefully well. And secondly Don wanted to get some sunshine and sneak in a little full size and RC Gliding around the islands. 3 Logo Competition Well the Competition has been run and inspite of a slow start we ended up with quite a few submissions so thank you to everyone who put in their logo ideas. So without further delay in first place the prize winner of the Logo Competition goes to.mr. Don Tester who submitted a total of 8 event Logos and variations of logos. In second place was Jeremy Stratton with Les Stockley and Glenn Twaddle tied for third. Don is currently away in Hawaii (yes he took his Mini-Vec slope model with him) so I will have to wait until his return to present him with his prize, a 2 pack of Chivas Regal Scotch. Although the competition has ended please feel free to continue to send me any event or SWA logo ideas you might have. Upcoming WA Gliding Events Saturday 19 th October am - "Bixler" Limited Motor Run Competition Yokine Reserve, Perth The competition is open to all modellers from all clubs including non members of MAAA who will be given insurance cover for the day as guests of Soaring Model Society. The competition is open to all Bixler varieties and the same model can be flown by more than one pilot. A $2 entry fee per pilot is payable. Prizes will be awarded. The annual Wings Over Whiteman event is on again at the Whiteman Park State Center on Saturday 19 th and Sunday 20 th October. The event is open for all types of RC aero modelling and the WAMASC boys have extended an invitation to all of us to come along to join in on the 2 day event and showcase the various aspects of RC Gliding. As we have 3 events on over this weekend I will be attending the WOW only on the Sunday. I will keep you all informed as further details come through from Tom and hopefully we can get some you to make the trip south (or north for the Albany Boys ) and help make this new event a big success. He said its strong points are the speed and turn performance. The model has a couple of minor dings which could be painted to look better. Does not include ballast set. 14 Now remember this photo, the fingers and tweezers. Using a tweezers, the controls can be moved. All cables and linkages are in place to work the wing control surfaces as well. Young Park has since carved a pilot's face and hands from solid aluminium and built an articulated pilot to sit in the cockpit. Here's pic of fingers and tweezers to give scale... Sooooo small!!! Remember this as you look at the pics...all the controls work as designed, by cables, chains, linkages and levers. Soaring WA. Oct, ~ 14 ~

16 All these controls WORK!!!!!... And that means they work the parts of the aircraft via rods and chains as in the original aircraft!!!! Every single part is handmade and fitted. It blows you away, doesn't it??? Soaring WA. Oct, ~ 16 ~

18 Machine guns and bullets... Detail of three.50 Cal. Machine guns and ammo cans. Ammo cans are loaded outside the aircraft and then simply set into place in the wing. Their doors become the top surface of the wing. This allowed for rapid reloading by the ground crew. Soaring WA. Oct, ~ 18 ~

20 Mr Park generously donated the first (cutaway) Corsair model to the Joe Martin Foundation. It can be seen in person in its display at the Foundation's museum in the Sherline building in Vista, California. A collection of photos showing how the model was built and all the historical data on the Corsair Mr Park collected to build it has also been donated and is available for viewing. In 2005, Mr Park also donated the second corsair and it is also now on display in the Foundation's museum. Soaring WA. Oct, ~ 20 ~

21 Inside the left wing you can see the.50 cal ammunition threaded into the three wing guns. Each round is machined in 3 parts brass cartridge with copper bullet and primer and is Held together with a small copper feed jacket. Soaring WA. Oct, ~ 21 ~

As is often the case in machining and model making, fixtures, moulds, formers and jigs to make the final parts can take a long time to make and are never seen by the public viewing the finished model.
