3 Introuction Thank you for choosing an SST SERIES Stereo Power Amplifier. Bryston welcomes any suggestions you may have, or comments regaring the operation of your amplifier. We consier you, our customer, to be Bryston s most important resource, an your opinion is very much appreciate. Description 3B SST The 3B SST is a ual mono esign 2 x 150W per channel auio power amplifier. Each channel selects a balance or single ene input. Each channel selects a gain of 29B(1v) or 23B(2v). The 3B SST inclues soft start power control circuitry to eliminate high inrush currents when A/C power is applie. The power up or turn-on of the 3B SST may be activate by remote control voltage. Description 4B SST The 4B SST is a ual mono esign 2 x 300W per channel auio power amplifier. Each channel selects a balance or single ene input. Each channel selects a gain of 29B(1v) or 23B(2v). The 4B SST inclues soft start power control circuitry to eliminate high inrush currents when A/C power is applie. The power up or turn-on of the 4B SST may be activate by remote control voltage. Warranty ( see back page for etails ) Shipping Box & Packing Material Please keep the original shipping box an all packing material. This will ensure the amplifier is protecte in future transport. In the unlikely event you have a problem an must return it for service you must use the proper packing material. Ship the amplifier only in the original packing material, as the unit is not insurable by carriers otherwise. Installation ( see rack mounting section if applicable ) Ventilation. The most important installation consieration is ventilation. All SST amplifiers are convection coole. Unrestricte air-flow across its heat sinks is a must. For this reason o not install anything irectly above it. Allow 3.5 (2u) to 5 (3u) inches of space above an to the sies of this amplifier. Do not install irectly above other heat generating equipment. Shoul your instillation conitions be constricte, then aitional force air-cooling may be necessary. Bryston can provie an optional fan package if require. Any SST channels thermally shutting own uring operation inicates insufficient air flow, an a remey must be foun for cooling the amplifier. Provie a minimum 6 space to the rear of the amplifier for ventilation an ressing cables to an from the amplifier. Never operate the amplifier in a vertical position. Wiring the SST amplifier ( also see rear panel escription ) Speaker wires shoul be as short as practical. Use quality wire, an if runs are more than 3 meters use at least 12 gage wire. The speaker bining posts will accept wire up to 3 gage in size. Bryston will custom buil cables for your application. A/C power Before plugging in the power cor be sure your SST amplifier is specifie for the correct a/c voltage for your locality. The voltage is liste on the label foun at the upper right of the rear panel. The circuit feeing the 4B SST shoul be sufficient so as not to cause the circuit breaker to trip (15 amp min). Note: the 4B SST when operate with both channels elivering maximum power into 4 ohm loas, will consume all the available power in a normal househol circuit, therefore a eicate electrical circuit may be necessary with this situation. Never lift the safety groun to the amplifier nor remove the groun pin from the plug. Power line conitioners will not improve the SST amplifier performance, in fact most of the time they restrict the flow of current to the amplifier, reucing performance at higher output levels 1

4 Rear Panel Input / Output Connections PUSH PUSH 1. Input Select Switch. Each SST channel gives the user the option of switching between either balance input or single ene input. 2. Balance Input connector. ( Imp. 20k ) This input connector accepts stanar XLR or 1/4 TRS. Use quality, 100% shiele cables with gol plate connectors. 3. Single Ene Input. ( Un-balance input ) ( Imp. 50k ) This input connector accepts stanar RCA or Phono connectors. Use quality, 100% shiele cables with gol plate connectors. Balance input Vs Single ene input: The balance input requires a balance pre-amp source. Balance systems provie noise rejection from external electrical interference, so cable length can be very long ( 50m or longer ). The single ene or unbalance input is provie for pre-amps without balance output. Single-ene cables shoul be kept to 20 (7m) or less. In general never use longer cables than necessary, never coil excess cable length, an keep signal wires away from AC power or speaker cables. 4. Input Sensitivity (Gain) Switch. The optimum gain setting will epen upon the source pre-amp operating level, an or personal preference. The 1v setting is use when the source is single-ene, or from a transformer couple balance source. This is the home theatre setting for single ene or un-balance operation. The 1v setting provies the most amplifier gain - 29 B. (1v in = 8 ohms.) (noise -110 B) The 2v setting is use when the sources output is actively Balance. This is the home theatre setting for balance operation Or use this setting with any systems where the volume control rotation is limite to the bottom half of the control or less. The 2v setting provies an amplifier gain - 23 B. ( 2v in = 8 ohms.) ( noise -113 B ) The noise is reference in B below rate output. Different input configurations result in slightly ifferent noise reaings. The above noise ratings represent minimum reaings, actual reaings may be better. 5. Moe Switch. (iniviual or brige moe) The iniviual setting is for two channel operation. Brige moe is for mono operation. 6. Level Control. (pro moels only) The level control will attenuate the input signal level from 0B through -14B. 2

5 6. Output bining posts. The RED bining post is connecte to the amplifier output. Connect to this post the (+) terminal on the louspeaker. The BLACK bining post is connecte to signal groun. Connect to this post the (-) terminal on the louspeaker. The Output bining posts provie three ifferent interconnect options. Combinations may be use when bi-wiring. See figure 2 below. Cables shoul be kept as short as practical an shoul never be terminate with connectors that may become confuse for AC power connectors. Cables shoul be resse away from input an power cables. 1. Banana plugs offer a quick isconnect option. Before inserting a banana plug into the bining post be sure to tighten the post nut to avoi rattling an to provie full insertion of the banana plug. Gol plate locking banana plugs are available from Bryston. 2. Spae lugs provie high contact area an secure fastening. Lugs shoul be gol plate. See iagram for etails. Post iameter is 5/16 ( 8mm ), lug with 5/8 (16 mm). Gol plate spae lugs are available from Bryston. 3. Strippe bare wire up to 3 gage can be inserte through the hole in the bining post an hel in place by tightening the post knob. Aitional tightening pressure can be achieve using a coin in the slots of the knob. Do not over tighten or the bining post may become amage. Note that copper wire is malleable an may require further tightening after the initial installation. Fig 2 Spae lug imensions 3

6 Front Panel 1. 'SST POWER' switch The front panel label 'SST POWER', is a touch sensitive membrane switch use to apply or remove a/c line power to the soft start circuitry. Push firmly the center of the switch until the power-up sequence begins. Push again an the amplifier will power-own. ( Note: the rear circuit breaker must be on for the amplifier to power-up) 2. LED Inicators Each SST channel has a LED inicator to monitor the following conitions: UNLIT - inicates channel has no power. RED - inicates channel is mute (power-up) GREEN - inicates channel operation is normal. FLASHING RED - inicates channel clipping. ORANGE - inicates channel thermal shutown. Power up sequence After pushing the 'SST POWER' switch, each channel LED will turn from unlit to re (mute). When the power supplies have stabilize the channel will come out of mute an the LED will change to green (normal operation). Unlit LED ( No power ) The SST channel LED when unlit inicates no A/C mains power is present at the channel. If both channel LED inicators are unlit the amplifier probably nees only to be powere on. Clipping ( flashing re ) Clipping occurs when the channel output level no longer can follow the level increase at the input (Overriven input conition). When an SST channel is riven into clipping the channel LED will change from green to re then back to green when the level is reuce ( Flashing Re ). Momentary clipping can be tolerate, however it inicates that maximum unistorte power has been surpasse an potential speaker amage may result if overloa conitions persist. Any amplifier that is constantly operate into clipping inicates a more powerful amplifier is neee for that application. Thermal Shutown ( orange ) Each channel has thermal shutown circuitry to prevent amage ue to overheating. Shoul thermal shutown occur, the channel will mute, an the channel LED will turn orange inicating this conition. When the channel has coole to a safe operating conition the channel will return to normal operation. Persistent Thermal shutown inicates steps nee to be taken to increase airflow across the channel or channels heat sink. ( Also see installation section on ventilation ). 4

Master circuit - breaker. The SST amplifier uses a magnetic-trip circuit breaker (1) to protect the amplifier. This switch shoul be OFF uring installation. When switche OFF all A/C power is remove from the amplifier, incluing stanby power. The circuit breaker is not the power switch an shoul be switche an left ON after the installation is complete.use the SST POWER switch or an external control voltage to Power-up or Power-own the amplifier. Shoul the breaker trip, lower or remove the amplifier input signals. Switch the breaker to the ON position. Then power the unit up normally. The circuit breaker must be ON at all times for the SST amplifier to operate. 2. AC power input. On the rear panel is provie a high current plug for the power cor receptacle. Check that the voltage rating on the label conforms with your locality. With the circuit breaker OFF insert the power cor into the SST amplifier, then plug the other en to an approprate A/C power outlet. 3. Power-Up ( Local / Auto switch. ) A. In Local position either the front panel SST POWER switch or an external voltage controls the power-up of the SST amplifier. B. Auto is use when the SST amplifier is powere from a switche power outlet. The SST POWER switch an / or control voltage will function normally after the initial power up External control voltage power up ( Local / external switch.) 4 3 A. To power-up the SST amplifier using an external control voltage, Supply a 4v to 12v A/C or DC control voltage to the IN terminals of connector ( 5 ). Use paire wire of 22 to 18 gage sufficient in length between the source evice an the SST amplifier. (see W ) Select switch (4) to External. The amplifier will now power-up only when the control voltage is present (on). Immeiately following power up, the control voltage will appear at the OUT terminals of connector (5) for the control of other equipment.the removal of the control voltage (0v) causes the amplifier to turn off an the control voltage at the OUT terminals is interrupte. B. In the Local setting of switch (4) the SST amplifier will ignore the control voltage, an power up only by using the front panel SST POWER switch, or as in section 3 above. If a control voltage is present at the IN terminals it will still be available at the OUT terminals after the power-up sequence. The control current is etermine by the source equipment. The carrying current of the OUT relay is 2 amps.
