Isolating transformers are preferably used in IT systems and rooms with group 2 medical (application) equipment, i.e. the isolating transformer must not switch off automatically and conform to the standard for permanent incorporation in protection class II (without protective conductor and with double or extra strong insulation of all parts of the transformer). 37 General technical information The following technical explanations provide useful informa- tion on important technical terms used in this catalog. Depending on the proposed use, additional or different definitions may be required. The following explanations are therefore not exhaustive. Fusing Fusing at the primary side is somewhat of a problem becau- se the inrush current can be as high as 30 times the rated input current, which depends on the size and type of the transformer. For this reason, the input side fusing in most cases provides protection only against short circuit and the fuses are slow-blowing. Picking the right fuse on the secondary side is much easier because due to the attenuating effect of the primary win- ding, current peaks are not possible at the secondary side. Possible fuse protection for the secondary side: - Miniature fuse to EN Automatic circuit breaker type B/C Taps Transformers can be made with primary side or secondary side taps. Primary-side taps serve the adaptation to different mains alternating voltages. If the taps keep within the range of +5%, no other transformer size is needed. Taps outside this range require the next bigger type. As a consequence of this, the full rated output cannot be tapped. If the output is needed at every voltage level, more winding space is needed, i.e., a bigger transformer may have to be used. An exception is again when the winding is divided into two and is followed by series or parallel connection. Transformer switched for 115V Duty ratio, DR The duty ratio (DR) of a transformer is the ratio between load time and cycle duration. Unless specified otherwise, the cycle duration is 10 min. t ein ED = x100% t ein + t aus Transformer switched for 230Vt 2 primary voltages The reduction factor, f, indicates the possible reduction of the size in comparison with continual service. In this case, no additional winding space is needed and the transformer can still be designed for two input vol- tages. If several secondary voltages are available, the taps are designed for the amperage of the highest voltage, unless the customer specifies otherwise. Insulation structure The following structures are possible: - Transformers with basic insulation (e.g., power transfomers for general service, control transformers) - Transformers with double or extra stroinsulation (e.g.,safety isolating or isolating transformers) - Transformers without insulation between input and output (so called autotransformers) 70

38 General technical information Insulation classes The provisions of IEC 85 and IEC 216 describe the heat resi- stance if insulation classes. Normally, we design transformers according to class B although most materials can resist much higher temperatures (e.g., copper wire and impregnating resin are at least class F resistant). Highest permitted temperature Insulation class at rated service conditions A 105 C E 120 C B 130 C F 155 C H 180 C Short time operation If the design rating for continuous operation is smaller than the rated output, the transformer can be overloaded for short periods provided it does not heat to more than the per- mitted overtemperature. Short-circuit resistance The following distinctions are made: Unconditionally short-circuit resistant transfomers are dimensioned in such a way that the temperature under overload or short circuit conditions does not exceed the per- mitted limits. To ensure this, the size must at least be double, and the no-load voltage is significantly higher than the rated voltage. Conditionally short-circuit resistant transformers have a built-in protection mechanism which opens the input or output circuit when the transformer is overloaded or short- circuited (e. g., fuses, thermal links, PTC thermistor, thermal switch). Transformers without short-circuit resistance must be protected against overload or short circuit by a mechanism that is not integrated in the transformer. This protection must be provided by the user. Output The rated output is the product of the rated output voltage and the rated output current (with 3-phase transformers, it is 3 times the product). In case of several output voltages, the rated output is the sum of the products of the rated output voltage and the rated output current of all circuits under load at a time. The design rating is defined as the output assigned to a size which is defined by design characteristics. 39 General technical information Connection symbols The interconnection of the windings is identified by connecti- on symbols. A connection symbol consists of a capital, a small letter and a number designating the phase relation. The capital letter stands for the primary winding and the small letter for the secondary winding. If no customization is required, 3-phase transformers are normally delivered in star-star connection. 40 General technical information Protection index The protection index marking consists of a code of two constant letters, viz. IP and two digits, e.g., IP 23. Ambient temperature If no non-standard ambient conditions are specified in the order, the transformer is designed for ta=40 C. If the actual temperature is higher, the rated output must be reduced as shown in the following figure. Autotransformers are therefore smaller than types with separa- ted windings. The smaller the difference between primary and secondary voltage, the smaller the transformer. 42 General Terms of Business 01/2002 I. General By placing the order, the buyer accepts these General Terms of Business as excusive basis for transaction of business. Buyer s terms, if any, are hereby expressly excluded and do not apply even in absence of our express objection. Any other agreements are only valid if made in writing. II. III. IV. Prices Our prices are without obligation and quoted ex works without packaging and in EURO currency, exclusive of value-added tax, which will be charged at the rate applicable at the time of delivery. Copper prices of EUR or more for each 100 kg lead to price adjustment prorated the specified weight. Terms of payment/setting off ng 1. The risk passes to buyer when the consignment in a state ready for use has been shipped or collected. Partial shipments which the buyer can reasonably be expected to accept are permitted. 4. Goods shall be accepted immediately upon completion. If buyer delays acceptance, we can charge warehousing cost at 0.5% of the invoice amount for every month, including fractions thereof, subject to a maximum of 5% of the value of the goods. 5. All shipments are made by the agreed date as far as possible. We are responsible for delays only in cases of intent or gross negligence and if acting under the constraints of law provided the buyer can submit poof of the damage caused. The damage is limited to 5% of the value partial delivery or delivery which is delayed. Force majeure is cause for a reasonable extension of the delivery period. V. Liability for defects We are responsible for defects as defined in 434, 435 BGB as follows: 1. All parts or services which become unusable or whose usability is substantial- ly limited for reasons before the passing of risk, in particular due to defects of type, defective material or poor workmanship, within 60 months - irrespective of the operating time - calculated from the date at which the risk passed, shall at buyer s option be repaired free, delivered new or made new. Any defect must be communicated to us in writing without delay. The term for electronic devices is 36 months. If buyer s choice (repair or replacement) entails unreasonably high cost, we can refer the buyer to a version which is less expensive for us. VI. 2. Buyer must allow us reasonable time and opportunity for repairing a defect. Otherwise we are released from our liability for the defect. 3. Any other claims by buyer on us are excluded unless such claims are substantiated in applicable law. Damage claims on grounds of impossibility of performance for which we are responsible or due to unavoidable statutory requirements are limited to 10 % of the value of that part of the delivery which cannot be used as intended. Retention of title 1. All goods shipped remain our property until full payment of all amounts due to us from the business transaction with the buyer is made or if payment is made by check or draft until paid. The buyer can dispose of the goods in the ordinary course of business. 2. The retention of title also extends to the full value of all products made by pro- cessing, mingling or combining our goods and we are also considered to be the maker of these products. If in the processing, mingling or combination of our goods with goods belonging to a third party that party s title survives, we acquire co-ownership in the new goods in the value represented by the respective invoice amounts of the processed goods. 3. Buyer assigns to us all claims on third parties created by the sale of the pro- cessed goods as security in the full amount or in the amount of our co-owner- ship (sub-article 2). Buyer can collect these amounts for our account until can- cellation or completion of buyer s payments to us. 4. Any seizure by a third party of goods or moneys belonging to us must be communicated to us by buyer in writing without delay. 5. The goods and payment claims in lieu of goods must not be pledged or offered as security or assigned unless full payment has been made to us. 6. If the value of the securities exceeds the amount due to us by more than 20%, we will release an appropriate part of the securities in our option if so requested by the buyer. VII. If the buyer is a general merchant, the legal venue, including for summary proceedings, is Bamberg or Jena. 3.
