8 Operation Functional description General The FM demodulator functional group consists of l the module FM demodulator FMD 501 l and the data processor DP 50. The FM demodulator is operated in the main frame BGT FMD 501, which is wired accordingly. Arrangement PC monitoring The rear panel assembly of the mainframe, wich is located directly behind the modules, is the electrical link between the modules. The module FM demodulator is slid from the front onto the guide-rails and into the main frame and is electrically connected with the rear panel assembly by way of the plug in connection located on the back of the modules. The data processor is attached at the rear side of the main frame. All connections are on the rear side of the module. The sound distribution networks are attached on the rear side of the main frame as well. The control output, the potentiometer of the muting adjustment and signalling are located on the front panel. 9 Operation FM demodulator The FM demodulators converts a frequency modulated RF-signal (87, MHz) to the IF (10,7 MHz) and demodulates it. At the output the MPX signal is present at Stereo transmission, the Audio signal at Mono transmission. Receiving frequency Input filter IF selection Low pass filter The reveicing frequency is set by means of hook switches on the board. Both input filters ars selective and therefore have to be adjusted to the inputfrequency. The selection in the IF is made in Stereo with coil-filters, that have a bandwidth of 150 khz. When transmitting in MONO, additionally a ceramic filter with a bandwidth of 75 khz is switched into the signal path. This ceramic filter is switched with switches on the board. If transmitting in stereo, this filter has to be bridged, as otherwise the bandwidth is limited and distortions are coming up. Higher frequent signal and noise ratio is suppressed with the Low pass filter at the output. For an optimal suppression of these ratio, depending on the way for transmission, a filter with the correct threshold frequency has to be used. The following table indicates, which filter is used for the different ways of transmission. If the input level falls below the set rated level, the FM demodulator automatically switches off the output and the green LED "RF" extinguishes. Additionally, the information, if the input level is below the set rated level is available on the rear panel assembly through the report line "RFP1" (RF Present). The rated level should be approximately 10 db below the standard input level. This guarantees, that the FM demodulator does not switch off the output due to level variations caused by weather conditions. The monitoring of the FM demodulator is effected by LED s or with the monitoring software. The most important parameters are indicated by means of LED s on the front panel (RF-input signal present and error in module). The monitoring output for the RF-and MPX/Audio signal are on the front panel as well. ü FM demodulator 2-3

13 Operation Putting into operation Cauting: - Only trained staff are permitted to put modules into operation. - The FM demodulator is operated in the main frame "FM modulator" which is wired accordingly. Putting into operation of the FM demodulator FMD 501 Requirement The module is adjusted correctly, that means, frequency setting, frequency adjustment... are correct. If not, please find instructions in the data sheets. NOTE: If possible, use PC monitoring software for putting into operation. CAUTION: - If the module is steamed up after unpacking, allow it to become acclimated for at least one hour before sliding it into the main frame. - Remove the red protection strip from the rear side in the module and keep it for eventual transport. Putting into operation 1. Slide the module into the place stipulated for it in the main frame. 2. Attach the module to the main frame with the 2 screws, located on the front panel. 3. Feed in the RF-signal. 4. Check, if the LED "RF" lights up and the red LED does not light up. If this is not, please see "help with problems". 5. Turn the potentiometer "MUTE" to the left hand stop. 6. Check the input level an the PC. 7. Set the rated level with the potentiometer "MUTE". It is indicated on the PC through the measuring value "INPUT SENS". The rated level should be approx. 10 db below the input level. If you put the FM demodulator into operation without monitoring software, proceed as follows: l Switch 10 db attenuator into the input path. l For this seperate the RF-lead between the connector plate and the rack-wiring and switch the attenuator in between. l Slowly turn the potentiometer "MUTE" to the right, until the LED "RF" extinguishes. l Remove the attenuator and connect the input signal to the connector plate again. ü FM demodulator 2-7

To adjust, open the module on the right side as seen from the front - the datasheet contains detailed information. Functional check Check the module function with the PC monitoring software.
