1 EE-241. Introductory Electronics Laboratory Project Ideas Fall 2009 EASY TO MODERATE 1. Musical notes display In this project students would build a display unit that will show high and low frequency sounds in a song. Mentor: Syed Abdullah Nauroze 2. Spy Microphone In this project students will make a portable parabolic microphone that would gather and deliver amplified sound to the earphones. It will enable one to hear feeble sounds at a distance. Mentor: Syed Abdullah Nauroze 3. Waveform generator Make your own signal generator. Mentor: Syed Abdullah Nauroze, Kashif Rahim 4. Three Band Audio Mixer & Equalizer Design an electronic circuit to mix audio signals. Implement audio equalization. 5. Voice Over Circuit Understand the concept of signal prioritization Design of a basic electronic circuit where we can prioritize a particular audio signal over all other audio signals through switching.
2 6. Schmidt Trigger Basic understanding of Schmidt Trigger Design of Schmidt Trigger using Op Amp 7. Temperature Measurements Basic understanding of thermistors Implementing a basic electronic circuit of a temperature sensor using thermistors 8. Low Voltage Alarm Design a circuit to monitor the input voltage and should indicate if the voltage drops a certain threshold value. 9. Traffic Lights Design a simple traffic lights model for two streets. If one of them sees a red signal then the other one should see green. After certain time delay signals should switch. You can be more innovative by adding an additional button for the pedestrians; its purpose could be to have both the signals to be red to safely cross the road. 10. Wireless FM Microphone Transmit the microphone generated signals through FM techniques. Tune a simple FM radio to hear the transmitted signals. 11. Light Dependent Switch
3 Design a circuit which should work as a switch depending on the brightness of the surroundings. A typical application could be to automatically turn ON the street lights when it gets dark. 12. Cassette Player Amplifier Cassettes have a magnetically polarized tape. A simple cassette player has a magnetic head which reads the tape and generates signals. Pick any broken walkman/cassette player; you can use its head and the mechanical functioning. Use the generated signals to drive them into your designed circuit where you have to amplify them to hear them properly either on a low power speaker or earphones. 13. AM Modulator Student Should do: Modulation of a two sine wave. Design the carrier band and a local oscillator for modulation. Mentor: Syed Atif Adnan 14. Voltage Controlled Oscillators This project utilizes the usefulness of Schmitt triggers and buffer A VCO is a circuit that provides an oscillating output signal (typically of square-wave or triangular waveform) whose frequency can be adjusted over a range by a dc voltage. 4 15. Two way Intercom Design two independent audio amplifiers for a two way intercom. Mentor: Mohammad Ali 16. IR Remote Control Design an electronic circuit to operate general purpose relays. Tie up these relays to household equipment. Mentor: Mohammad Ali 17. Digital Voltmeter Design an analog-to-digital convertor and use it to make a digital voltmeter. Mentor: Mohammad Ali HARD AND CHALLENGING 1. Pulse Oximetry and Physiological Measurements Design an electronic circuit to obtain a pulse Oximetry signal. Measure Oxygen saturation level of human blood and Blood speed using analog signal processing. Mentor: Umer Siddiqui 2. Heart Beat Rhythms Design a simple electronic circuit to get the heart beat rhythms using microphone and stethoscope. Measure and display the heart rate.
5 Mentor: Umer Siddiqui 3. Noise Generator Design a Pseudo Random Bit Sequence (PRBS) Generator. Generating White noise using the above PRBS generator by appropriate filtering. Mentor: Umer Siddiqui 4. Simulating an artificial neural network Basic understanding of a mathematical neuron. Implementing a neuron for some specified application (e.g. generating a sine wave) using simple and basic electronics. Making a network of electronic neurons for cognitive tasks. Mentor: Umer Siddiqui 5. FM phone transmitter The FM phone transmitter is a passive device that uses the signals from the phone line for power. This device will be able to transmit signals at a short distance over the phone line. Mentor: Syed Abdullah Nauroze 6. DC Motor Driver Understand the working of DC Motor & the parameters governing its speed control Design a simple electronic circuit that drives a DC Motor., Syed Atif Adnan
6 7. Regulated Power Supply. Design a regulated DC power supply with appropriate voltage regulation, Kashif Rahim 8. Cell phone Call Detector If a cell phone is placed near any audio system we may hear a flickering noise for any incoming calls. This is due to interference of the incoming signals. Design a circuit which can use these incoming signals to detect any incoming calls. 9. USB Battery Charger If you cut any USB cable it will have four wires. One of them is ground and the others may have different potentials usually +5V depending on different standards and applications. You can use these standards to design a lithium ion battery charger circuit. 10. Analog Computers: Computing before the digital age Student should do: Make programmable analog circuits capable of solving algebraic and differential equations. Mentor: Hasan Arshad Nasir 11. Infra-Red Remote controller The transmitter and receiver of IR will be studied in detail The circuits will comprise of Transistors and op-amps so far studied in the lab The modulation and demodulation should be considered in order to make our signals stand out above noise Mentor : Kashif Rahim
