GENERAL INFORMATION Midian Electronics VTE-, voting tone encoder (also known as a pilot tone generator or status tone generator) with a 00-ohm line driver, pairs with a radio receiver to create an analog satellite voting receiver or auxiliary receiver. Satellite voting receivers are spread out over a geographic area to provide greater radio coverage and are connected via a dedicated line, telemetry link or microwave to a voting comparator. The voting comparator looks at the signal to noise ratio from multiple voting receivers and passes the best quality signal to the dispatcher/repeater. The VTE- looks at the COR coming from the receiver. When COR is inactive the VTE- generates a voting tone to the voting comparator. This tone is selectable as 0 Hz, Hz, 00 Hz or 00 Hz. Custom tones can also be ordered from Midian. When the receiver s COR is active the tone is no longer generated and the audio from the radio is sent to the voting comparator. Midian s VTE- is compatible with the following types of voting systems: Motorola Spectra-TAC JPS Communications (Raytheon) SNV- GE Mastr II RF Technologies Eclipse Other systems using 0 Hz, Hz, 00 Hz or 00 Hz as the voting tone.
HARDWARE INSTALLATION Be certain to follow standard anti-static procedures when handling any of Midian s products. Getting Started: The VTE- has a number of adjustment potentiometers and configuration jumpers. These have been adjusted and configured at the factory for a typical installation. However, audio levels should be verified and adjusted (if necessary) at the time of installation. Also, the configuration jumpers should be inspected prior to installation to verify that they are in the right configuration. Jumper descriptions appear in the jumper settings section with a quick reference table. Line Interface The line interface connector CON is a 0-pin RJ- style connector on the left side of the back panel. Diagram. -Wire Operation: For a -wire installation, simply connect pins and (red and green) to the dedicated line. A standard conductor phone cable will function properly in connector CON. See table.. Table. Pin Color -Wire CON- Black Not Used CON- Red Line CON- Green Line CON- Yellow Not Used Radio Interface: CON is located in the middle of the back panel and is used to connect the VTE- to the satellite or auxiliary receiver. The following are the connection points: CON: CON- (Orange): COR: Connect this lead to the busy detect of the radio. This input is used to control whether audio should be passed down the line to the voting comparator or generate the pilot tone. CON- (Red): Battery (- VDC): Connect this lead to - VDC from the base station/repeater. CON- (Black): Ground: Connect this lead to the base station s or repeater s ground. CON- (White): RX Input: Connect to the receive audio in the satellite or auxiliary receiver after the sub-audible hi-pass filter and at some point that gives flat audio to the VTE-. Speaker audio is fine if it is single ended, but make certain the volume control cannot be turned down accidentally.
HARDWARE ALIGNMENT The alignments are preset at the factory and should not need to be adjusted during installation. However, if an adjustment is needed please follow the procedures below. RX Input Line Level Adjustment:. With voice being received from the base station adjust RP while monitoring TP with an oscilloscope, so that TP shows around 00 mv p-p. Also verify that JP Pin shows around 0 mv p-p. RX Output Line Level Adjustment:. With voice being received from the base station adjust RP while monitoring the line out with a line level meter and set for approximately -0 db on average voice or - db on peak voice. Pilot Tone Level Adjustment:. Prior to performing this step, the line level adjustments above must be done. Set RP to the desired db level (-0 to 0 db). Setting the COR Input of the VTE- to the inactive state (logic high) will cause the unit to generate the Pilot Tone. Note: If a line level meter is not available for the level adjustment use an AC voltmeter with a DB scale. A voltmeter would not be set up for balanced 00 ohm audio, but it will provide a close measurement.
JUMPER SETTINGS The following table shows the default jumper settings and their function: Jumper Number Default Position Description JP - In - Out De-Emphasis jumper JP - In Termination jumper JP0 - In Termination jumper JP - Out Hz Pilot Tone Select JP - In 0 Hz Pilot Tone Select JP - Out 00 Hz Pilot Tone Select JP - Out 00 Hz Pilot Tone Select JP-JP All Out No Pilot Tone
CONTROLS & INDICATORS Power LED: This red LED indicates that power is applied to the unit through the rear connector. COR/MON LED: This red LED indicates carrier is detected from the receiver. Tone LED: This red LED indicates the Pilot Tone is being generated. OPERATION Voting Tone Encode: When COR is inactive from the receiver to the VTE-, the unit will generate the selected Pilot Tone to the voting comparator. Receive: When COR is active from the receiver to the VTE-, the unit will pass the voice from the receiver to the voting comparator.
THEORY OF OPERATION RX Voice Path: RX audio from the base station goes through hipass filter C and RP. RP also serves as the RX input level adjustment pot. This audio is then fed into audio amplifier U: which acts as low pass filter for noise above KHz and if jumper JP is installed it can provide a db per octave de-emphasis if desired. Audio from U: is fed to C. Voice audio is input into the audio mixer U:. The mixer audio is then input into the line amplifier (U0:) which drives T. The line amplifier has an enable transistor that is controlled by the microprocessor. The micro can respond to the COR carrier input and enable this amplifier. Pilot Tone is injected into the audio path at C- PWM input. Power Supply: - VDC is input on the red wire of the Radio Interface connector and then into RF inductor L into an autoresettable polyswitch. D is a polarity protection diode that is designed to pop the resettable fuse if power is hooked up backwards. C and C act as RF bypass caps after the RF inductor L. U acts as a VDC regulator. Its output is fed to all of the analog circuitry and U: acts a pseudo-ground reference at approximately VDC. The VDC on the analog page schematic is also fed over to U which is a VDC regulator shown on the digital page to run the microprocessor and the optional encoders/decodes and serial chips. The relays on the digital page receive their VDC from the VDC regulator. They are driven by opencollector transistors to protect the microprocessor from the VDC.
