3 3 5-Minute Lighting Exam To assess acuity performance at various levels of illuminance and color temperature, switch on the LuxIQ and place it over reading material, such as eye charts and newspapers. In the white mode, examine the patient with intense, cool to warm light. Switch to the color mode to use the full spectrum of bright green to red light. For some, tinted light reduces eyestrain and further increases acuity Select intensity using Lux slider, and keep constant. Adjust color temperature at that intensity using Color slider. Record the preferred intensity (lux) and color temperature ( K). 8 8 LuxIQ Exam Protocol Here is a protocol similar to what others are using to take near-acuity measurements and give practical lighting recommendations in about 5 minutes. First set luminance and then select color temperature. Luminance quantifies brightness; color temperature contributes to acuity and comfort. STEPS Lay down a standard acuity chart to quantify change. Acuity gain from intense light is often greater at low contrast. 1. Record near visual acuity with exam room lighting. This provides a baseline measure of number of characters read. 2. Have patient set their preferred Lux (illuminance), and record acuity. 3. Have patient select the Color (temperature), starting with cold white (6500K). OPTIONAL 4. Re-evaluate the preferred Lux using the preferred Color temperature (step 3 above). 9 9 NOTES ON PROTOCOL The acuity difference measured by the LuxIQ is a conservative estimate of the benefit of increased lighting. The in-home gain may be even greater as clinic lighting is often better than home lighting. Using calibrated, white light makes it easy to recommend commercially available task lighting. Most clinicians work solely with the Lux IQ cold-towarm white continuum. Others work with the green-red continuum as well. If glare is an issue ask patients to try the green light option and record acuity. Preliminary evidence suggests green is beneficial for some patients. Green lighting is available with the VisionEdge light. To recommend light bulbs, use either the Light Bulb Calculator described on page 7 or LightChooser App ( NEXT, LEARN ABOUT THE LIGHTCHOOSER WEB APP Use LightChooser to enter your measurements and generate a report of recommended task lighting or bulbs. This report can be customized with your practice name and logo, and printed for your patients. It lists lamps that are commercially available and, when used at the indicated distance from the desk, match the patient s needs for illuminance and color temperature. 9

Warranty excludes normal wear and tear, misuse, abuse and shipping costs. The LuxIQ is a calibrated optical instrument and should be handled with care. Prior to first use, please charge the LuxIQ using the provided AC Adapter for 2-4 hours. If not in use, store the AC Adapter above the LuxIQ in the storage box, not in the view area where it might bounce against the optics. If using the LuxIQ soft tote, store the AC Adapter in the zippered pocket on the front flap. Do not stare into the light when turned on. This could cause temporary vision spots that typically dissipate in a few minutes. Do not open the enclosure. There are no user serviceable parts, and doing so would void the warranty.
