3 Basics on Illuminance Lumen, Lux & Candela Lumen, lux and candela are three fundamental illuminance terms, which causes great confusion. Furthermore the technical datas used on the professional market are often even more confusing and almost impossible to compare. We hereby want to try to give you an easy overview to understand these terms and explain our data. Lux 20 lx 100 lx 300 lx 750 lx 1500 lx Illuminance Lux (lx) Lux indicates the intensity to which a surface at some point is illuminated. It is widely used by photographers measuring one point of the object. It does NOT define how large an area was illuminated with this intensity. Formula: One lux equals one lumen per square meter of illuminated surface area. Lux = Lumens Square meters (Example of reflector spot with high center output only) Candela Light Power in Candela (ca) 60 ca 10 ca 10 ca Candela is latin and means wax candle. Originally 1 candela was equivalent to the illuminance of one (wax) candle. Simplified - It just measures how much light power the source produces within a certain defined angle. The same total output, but with different output angle creates different intensity. It is therefore a relative intensity value and it does NOT say anything about how much light you get at the object! It is the amount of lighting power that is emitted from the lamp. Some manufacturers just specify the Lumen of the LED itself - and neglect to say that it is significantly reduced by the losses in the reflector/lamp head (mostly over 30% loss!). 6 LED Technology What are LED s? Light Emitting Diodes (= LED s) are cold light digital emitters based on a micro-chip. Because the LED is moulded in to a plastic compound, it is completely shock-proof and nearly indestructible.
