3 NDC ADVANTAGE - LITHIUM ION BATTERYNDUSTRY Unique, Accurate Separator Film Measurements Greater product visibility and control capability for outstanding product performance Cast End Thickness, & Oil A Complete Suite of Separator Film Measurements NDC employs infrared (IR) measurement technology to provide higher accuracy gauging of the basis weight of battery separator film. This unique IR technology can also simultaneously measure the thickness, density and oil content providing a comprehensive picture of total film quality. Thickness, Basis and Oil Measurement NDC s FG710S infrared sensor measures Cast End & Film End Profiles both the thickness and basis weight of clear, voided, cavitated, porous and translucent films. Due to the density variation of voided films, manufacturers have found it difficult to accurately measure the thickness. NDC s patented FG710S solves this problem by combining discrete near infrared filters and powerful gauge algorithms that enable direct thickness measurement of these voided films. NDC uses proprietary IR filters, algorithms and spectral shift of absorption curves to determine on-line thickness of micro-porous FG710S Infrared Sensor Thickness APC Thickness Profile Control Basis weight film in the typical range of 10 to 40 microns. Oil content This also allowsinverted density to betextile calculated 4 Roll Calender Coextrusion components based on the infrared thickness and basis weight measurements. In addition, the FG710S can measure the oil content in PE battery film across the entire process beginning with the wet cast film after the biax stretch and the final film. 4 NDC ADVANTAGE - LITHIUM ION BATTERY Lithium Ion Battery Coating Continuous coat weight measurement solutions for discrete coating operations Gap Exclusion Software Gap Exclusion software measures the coat weight of patch and stripe coatings by excluding the uncoated areas between each coating application. The measurement strategy uses threshold measurement limits to ensure that sensor readings below a certain uncoated value are ignored. Also, the sensor s beam width determines the point at which measurement commences and terminates as it transitions the coating patches. This technique produces continuous, accurate coat weight information suitable for closed loop control. Same Spot Measurement Same Spot Measurement synchronizes the sensors and scanners so that their measurements are taken from the same spot on the web. This eliminates any substrate variability from affecting the coat weight measurement. The distance between each scanner is determined as a total number of tachometer pulse counts from the master line speed transducer. When the base scanner is started, a pulse count is loaded into a line pulse hardware register. This is decremented as the line moves so that when it reaches zero, the coat scanner is started and both sensors measure exactly the same spot on the sheet. 5 NDC ADVANTAGE - LITHIUM ION BATTERY NDC s Press Line Thickness Measurement System A unique measurement and control solution for uniform, high-quality battery performance In order to increase the power density of the finished battery, the calendering press line enhances the contact between the particles to improve the transport of electrons. Due to the tight operating tolerances demanded by the calendering press line, this requires high-resolution, accurate thickness measurement to produce consistent quality and performance. NDC s Press Line Thickness System NDC has developed a thickness gauging system for battery press lines to measure and control the calendering compression process. NDC s extensive measurement and controls experience with calendering has resulted in the development of a sophisticated gauging system that provides both the high-resolution measurement and effective controls that are necessary to manage the high nip pressures on these processes. NDC s new cost-effective solution is custom designed for measuring battery thickness on press lines. It combines the field-proven MiniTrak C-Frame scanner with its noncontacting laser thickness sensor. The measurement technique is based on distance triangulation computation of a laser beam. This platform with its small footprint is designed for easy installation on battery press lines. The system is equipped with an interactive color operator interface for both measurement and control operations. Press Line Thickness Control NDC s accurate thickness measurement and robust calender controls permit products to be run to extremely tight thickness tolerances while achieving uniform quality. Controls include: Gap Control Controls the roll positions in order to keep the gap(s) at a target value. An advanced control algorithm automatically retunes for different material compositions and compensates for any mechanical backlash or stiction. Average Thickness Control Average thickness control supervises the gap controls and is decoupled from other controls to avoid interaction and loss of quality. Delta Preset Control In order to produce quality products quickly, the calender gap is automatically preset at the beginning of a run based on the recipe-based material composition.
