6 Envelope Printing FSL or Offset/Litho Utilized in sheet fed, or jet press formats. Offset lithography is based on the concept that water & oil will not mix. Using a thin, flat metal plate the image area is made ink receptive & water repellant. The non-image area is made water receptive & ink repellant. Ink is applied to the plate after it has been exposed to water. The image is then transferred, or offset to a blanket cylinder, which then transfers the image to the paper. There is no plate to paper contact in the offset process. Advantages to the offset process include clarity of image, consistent color and coverage, the ability to reproduce fine screens & half-tones. Slightly higher cost & limited image area when jet printing are drawbacks to the process.

7 Flexography Rotary-web letterpress printing uses a flexible plastic or rubber plate on which the image area is raised above the non-image area. Plates are mounted to the printing cylinder and ink is transferred to the raised surface of the plate via rollers. The inked image is then transferred directly to the paper. Because flexography can be done during the manufacturing process it offers relative low cost on large runs. The disadvantages are poor/inconsistent image quality and coverage.

9 How should I print my Envelope? Factors such as paper, image complexity, area and location, order size, delivery requirement and budget are considered when determining which process and format to specify.

14 Be Careful!! Common mistakes made when ordering envelopes Right Size wrong style: There are a number of envelopes that go by different names but are the same size. A-7 (5-1/4 x 7-1/4) which has 2-9/16 seal flap, which is NOT machine insertable. What you want is a 5-1/4 x 7-1/4 with a smaller machine insertable flap. Another example is a Monarch (3-7/8 x 7-1/2). Again the designation Monarch refers to a style which has a long (2-3/4 ) uninsertable flap. What you want to ask for is a #7-3/4 envelope. This is an industry standard size, with a commercial, insertable flap.

15 Styles Wallet Flap vs. Remittance Flap: A wallet flap, regardless of the envelope size has a seal flap that falls halfway down the back of the envelope. A remittance flap will go almost to the bottom of the envelope. Both of these envelopes can be perfed.

16 Grain Direction Laid, Linen, Groove or Riblaid direction: When ordering an envelope which has any type of textured finish you must specify which direction (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) you want the finish to run. This will affect how the envelope is laid out & does affect the price.

17 Windows Window Specifications: A standard left window, regardless of the envelope size, is 1-1/8 x 4-1/2 7/8 left, 1/2 bottom. (merlin window would be 5/8 bottom). For windows on the face of the envelope, the area needed is 1/2 from all sides. When quoting a window envelope you would want to specify the specs as height x width. This is how we know if the window runs vertical or horizontal. Ex. Horizontal window = 1-1/4 x 3-1/2, Vertical window = 3-1/2 x 1-1/4 POLY 1-1/4 x 3-1/2 7/8L 5/8B POLY 3-1/2 x 1-1/4 7/8L 1/4B

18 Patch Material Window Patch Material: Important to specify if the envelope is to be produced with or without a patch. If no patch is needed, then OPEN WINDOW is the correct specification. Patch Material: POLY, GLASSINE, ENVIROSAFE

19 Graphic Design Artwork Fitting the Die: When designing art for your mail piece it is always helpful if you request a template of the die being used. This allows for the proper amount of bleed or wrap to be created from the beginning. This would usually be done on a Print Flat & Convert job.

20 Inserts Does your return fit your carrier? Most mailshops require a 1/2 clearance for insertion. Ex. #10 4-1/8 x 9-1/2 Carrier, #9 3-7/8 x 8-7/8 Return

21 Purchase Orders The OLD Copy & Paste: Be careful when pulling an old PO, copying and pasting specifications for a new job. Oftentimes, something changed from the last time the order was placed.
