Within any one painting may lay the ghosts of many others. I like to subvert the content and context within a painting, creating a psychological landscape that has its own unique rhythm and harmony. I edit, adapt and obliterate, layering over and over until I feel the balance is perfect. 3

3 Dan Baldwin Maddox Gallery is pleased to present A New Optimism, an exhibition of 42 new works and 2 edition prints created by the internationally acclaimed British Artist Dan Baldwin. In this, the artist s nineteenth solo show, he presents us with a narrative that veers between representation and abstraction, a journey featuring allegorical symbols of love, luck and magic that map his continuing search for perfection. Rendered through the use of built up layers of acrylic paints, gold leaf and charcoal applied to both raw linen and canvas, this new body of work cements Baldwin as one of Britain s most exciting and important contemporary artists. A New Optimism is Dan Baldwin s second solo show at Maddox Gallery and one that expands on his previous showing by displaying works produced from his new studio, the light and scale of which have encouraged an accelerated and renewed enthusiasm for his study of colour, content and context. Baldwin credits Damien Hirst, Gilbert & George, Jake & Dinos Chapman and Peter Blake as his pivotal nuances, uniquely these same artists have returned the compliment by becoming collectors of his work and state him as a key artistic influencer for his generation. In addition, his work is to be found in prominent collections and institutions around the world, including appearing in the permanent collections of the Groucho Club, Café Royal, House of St Barnabas, Damien Hirst, Sir Ronald Cohen and Jake Chapman. 4 5
