R A G SHEET RIVERFRONT ART GALLERY THE GALLERY S SUMMER SHOW WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, THROUGH SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2016 SHOW OPENING AND ART WALK RECEPTION SATURDAY, JULY 9, 5:00-9:00 PM Musical Interludes by Bob Johns JULY 2016 ANNUAL SHOWIN ON THE RIVER! JURIED FINE ART SHOW Rakshika Thakor, Nikki King, Kirk Hinshaw, Lucy Arnold, Michael Rohner, Margaret Eldred, Tim Body, Linda Capizano, Susan Barri, Karen West, Sasha Latypova, Barbara Holmes, Nancy Lloyd, Christine McNamara, Tje Koski, Norma Dimaulo, Laura Wilson-Hill, Andrea Cleall, Philip Wilkinson, Leona Akers, Larry Pahl, Clark Mitchell JULY SIDEWALK SALE * GALLERY OFFERINGS: Paintings Mixed Media Photography Ceramics Sculpture Woodcraft Lamps Jewelry FIND US/FRIEND US ON FACEBOOK (707) SPECTACULAR SHOW COMING YOUR WAY! The annual Showin On The River! Juried Fine Art Show is always a hit. This year will not be an exception. Riverfront continues to be deeply impressed with the depth and breadth of artistic expression this show always reveals. It will also be the largest juried show we have ever assembled, with 73 pieces by 43 artists. It will take both July and August newsletters to even begin to give readers an idea of the skill, style, humor, and beauty represented in this show. Even then, a good third of the works will not have been shown in these pages. There is a delightful diversity. Read to the end and then come to the show itself. You won t be disappointed!! The only woodcut in the show is Rakshika Thakor s amusing You Say Hello, I Say Goodbye (below). A woodcut is created by removing the surface of a block of wood where no ink is wanted, thus leaving a raised image where ink will be applied. Once colors are carefully put on, the block is t u r n e d o v e r a n d pressed down to print the image. This is one of the world s oldest art techniques, known to have been used as early as the 5th century in China. Collage also began in China with the m a k i n g o f p a p e r around 200 BC. The word was coined by Picasso and Braque SIDEWALK SALE AT RIVERFRONT JULY Several Gallery Members and Invitational Artists will participate in the July Sidewalk Sales Thursday Through Saturday, July 21 to 23. Continued on page 2

who are credited with bringing collage into the realm of fine art. San Francisco artist, Nikki King explains, Collage works, like Prairie Dreams (below), are created with enigmatic images that evoke an emotional response in the artist. Through a spontaneous and instinctive process, seemingly unrelated fragments from various sources are arranged into a finished collage that is a harmonious fusion of form, color, line, and emotion. Kirk Hinshaw repeatedly entertains gallery visitors with his own imaginative hand-cut collage images. His pieces are generally simple in design with lots of space for his characters, but his concepts remain quite complex with unexpected juxtapositions as in his Surprised Visitor (at left). Lucy Arnold s watercolor, Bits Of Flight (right), l o o k s l i k e a collage due to the complicated composition. With a biology background, L u c y s a y s, I depict real species. I can t imagine life forms more wonderful, b e a u t i f u l, o r bizarre than those actually found here on Earth. Thoroughly delightful is All The King s Men (below center) by Michael Rohner. This mixed media work includes ink, marker, watercolor, oil, and pastel. He says, I aim to express ideas and notions that are difficult to convey with words, hoping to uplift, inspire, and comfort through my imagery. If I can accomplish even a portion of that, then I am at peace with my passion. Margaret Eldred s Whitebark Pine (below) demonstrates the lovely qualities of pen and ink. I like the way drawing enables me to isolate the essence of what I want to convey, not necessarily what one sees. I like the challenge of rendering different kinds of light and creating an impression of form and depth. I like the subtlety of the inked line. Riverfront Art Gallery Newsletter October, July,

Speaking of fine lines, Tim Brody excels in intricate pastels, as in Eye (above). He says, Atmospheric light, the most important element, suffuses a scene, conveying feeling, emotion, mood, and mystery. Each painting is a leap into the unknown. There is no road map or set formula. Each presents its own demands and calls for unique responses. We see that same skill in handling atmospheric light in Linda Capizano s oil, Freedom Runners (below) with the misty background and the sudden splash of light on the horse s side. We feel motion amid calm. As if on the same wave length, Susan Barri gives us The Great Escape (top right). Almost exclusively using the palette knife to apply oils to canvas, Susan says, This painting was an opportunity to use lots of color and just pile it on with my knife and still have it all feel real. They are running free of any bridle and it feels just right. In contrast, the background has become abstract without my even realizing it. R e a l i s m c o n t i n u e s with Karen W e s t s watercolor, An Apple A Day, (right). Karen says s h e i s fascinated by the small blue bits of light that have shone through the leaves and b r a n c h e s of the Washington apple tree in o u r y a r d. Most years apples are abundant, juicy, and delicious. S a s h a Latypova s acrylic, Pomegranates In Blue China (right) i s a p u r e classical work. 4 Sasha Latypova, continued from page 3. Sasha tells us, In still life I am inspired by the precision and beauty of the 16th- and 17th-century Dutch still life paintings. In my still life paintings, I want to convey a sense of inner peace, focusing on the purity of colors and simplicity of composition, shapes, and lighting. The beauty of simple everyday things has a meditative quality, and I hope that the viewer will find it in my images. Our artists have also captured wonderful reality in a group of figurative works, from children delighting in discovering their world, to mid-life scenes, to elderly gentlemen sharing stories on a bench. Barbara Holmes says, The master realism artists have always been a source of inspiration. It requires skill, commitment, and a degree of tenacity to render life-like portraits that make manifest the soul of diverse living subjects. We certainly do recognize the child in all of us with Barbara s touching acrylic, Our Catch (below). In Nancy Lloyd s At The Bar (center right) we get quite another vibe indeed. While interaction is paramount in the other two examples, here we see isolation and separation despite proximity, perhaps too often a component of mid-life pressures. Tje Koski explains, My present work, like Conversation (bottom right) focuses on individual people as well as people interacting with each other. I work from my own photos of people in unobserved moments, so I can show them as they are rather than posing. I usually use a zoom lens so there is a distance between us. I feel a little like a spy, but I want above all realness in my work. Christine McNamara s p r i m a r y m e d i u m i s watercolor. She says, Its transparency and clarity are i d e a l f o r depicting the l a n d s c a p e, s h e f u r t h e r explains. I try to achieve a quality of calmness and serenity in my w o r k. H e r Elegant Lady (top right) is based on an en plein air sketch of Madrona M a n o r i n Healdsburg. S h e w a s i n s p i r e d b y E d w a r d H o p p e r s watercolors of Victorian mansions on the East Coast. Riverfront Art Gallery Newsletter October, July,

Giving us an up-close-and-personal view, Norma Dimaulo engages us with her rendering of Birch Hues (below), its textures created by the palette knife. She comments, It is from a recent birch series of oil paintings. As an abstract realist painter, I am drawn to organicinspired themes. Contemporary in tone, my paintings reflect a pared-down viewpoint of the world around me. T h a t h a s become my signature. R o b i n s Poppies (left), i s a monotype by printmaker, L a u r a Wilson-Hill. She tells us, I have immersed myself in the printmaking process, specifically m a k i n g monotype prints using an etching press. When I start a print, I deconstruct or rearrange the composition on a plate. I ink my plate with color by rolling, painting, or drawing onto it. Each time I run it through the press, I am adding more color and/or images until I reach the desired design. Sometimes as the positive and negative spaces emerge, I am inspired to explore a new direction with the work. I developed Robin s Poppies by printing many layers of back ground first. After several days of drying, I painted the orange poppy color onto the plate to arrive at the orange pop of color. It works well with both the subtle background and the brightness of the poppy flowers. This show is replete with stunning landscapes. Andrea Cleall s acrylic Harmony (below) is a perfect example. Readily recognizable as a portrait of our area, it features the iconic elements and colors we are so familiar with, yet Andrea composes them into something new and different to be appreciated anew. Finding his subjects for Paperbarks in Winter Light (bottom) at the Quarry Hill nature reserve, Philip Wilkinson tells us that this is a threatened maple species. Further he says, Art surrounds us. We only have to see, hear, feel, or taste it. It s a way of Life! See how beautiful the peeling bark is when the sun shines through it! To render these trees, Philip has used water miscible oils, which allows techniques closer to watercolors. Riverfront Art Art Gallery Gallery Newsletter October, July

Clark Mitchell has been designated as a Master Pastelist and a Distinguished Pastelist by two pastel societies. We can certainly understand why from his stunning Above Petaluma (above) with its expansive view giving us a new perspective. He says, I love the variety of vantage points from the hills, allowing an intriguing and thought-provoking contrast between rural and urban. Leona Akers gives us a soft, sensitive, calming watercolor that just barely suggests mountains, valleys, and a sky with touches of evening color. The Far View (center right) hints of more than geography with the subtle emotions it evokes. Art saves; it continues to save me every day, she says. With similar tones Larry Pahl has rendered Old Wharf On Bodega Bay (bottom right), and it has a similar emotional impact exactly what Larry wants. He says, Painting transports me into a spiritual realm where I exist in the present moment and where all things reveal their own unique beauty. My goal is to capture that experience so it may be revisited again and again through my art. I paint in the impressionist/colorist tradition, because it enables me to enhance reality rather than just mimic it. This show overview doesn t even tell half of the story! The opening reception on Saturday, July 9, 5:00-9:00 would be a great time to stop by the gallery. Guaranteed, it will be a busy evening with lots to see and live music by Bob Johns. Do come!
