1 The QUILL - Bald Eagle Art League s Monthly Newsletter October 2015 Roy Lichtenstein, (American, Style, Movement: School or Type of Art: Pop Art Roy Lichtenstein is one of the two most recognized names in Pop Art (Andy Warhol being the other). He is best known for his paintings of what appear to be machine-printed comic strips, although he was also fond of depicting advertisements. His work is characterized by his wry sense of humor, careful precision (he never let his brushwork show) and use of stencils to create the paintings' patterns of Ben Day dots. (Those were a tool graphic artists used before the advent of computer pixels.) With Johnny Romeo at the Converge Gallery for the second time, and I like his work, did a critique on him for our website and he is a Pop Artist, I thought Lichtenstein appropriate.

2 I remember when I saw the beach lady for the first time. I was coming down the stairs at the Moma, NYC, and there she was. I didn t see her on the way up but there she was on the way down. OMG, and OHHHH, the dots! What s been Happening? Brienne Brown, a well known plein air watercolorist was our guest for October and she was not only informative but entertaining as well. I felt bad about cancelling it, and really did lose sleep over it, but with the rain and the cold, and the fact that only a few of us would show, I made the executive decision to call it. I did say that it would take a hurricane, and you might say that is what happened. After all, next year is another year. Is that what Scarlet said?

3 What s Coming Up? Remember 2 Fall Fests coming up: 2 nd Annual Fall Into the Arts Fest at Rose Valley Lake on October 10 th & 11 th. Check the BEAL website for details. This is an invitation of vendors only event, except anyone can come out a Plein Air paint overlooking the lake. Notify me if you are interested in this. Plein Air painting will help to get your foot in the door since next year they are planning to invite more artists. Don Kline/Valley Gallery s Open House is Saturday October 24, from 10 to 5. Contact Don if you want to set up a tent and sell art. Don t forget about the Valley Gallery Contest due soon, so contact Don about entering. Plenty of awards for winning!!! Check our website for guidelines under the FORMS page. I, personally, have not heard anything new on the Park Place issue. I know Leslie James has been dedicating a lot of time to it. With the growth of the arts in this area, Williamsport, I do agree that BEAL needs a place downtown to display member s art, so if you have any ideas, please let us know. Please keep in mind that we are non- profit. Remember: There is no regular meeting scheduled for November because of the Best of BEAL, so our next meeting is on the first Thursday in December. Since the Best of BEAL and the next Genetti Grille Gallery Opening are on the same night at the same time (cannot be helped), we suggest you go to the Genetti early and then to the Best of BEAL. A double label for each work must be completed and attached to the back of each work. I will have forms for on the back of your artwork to pick up at the meetings. A maximum of two pieces may be entered. Two dimensional original art only will be accepted. No copies or prints will be accepted. Works that have won Best In Show, First, Second, or Third Prize in a previous Best of BEAL competition are not eligible. Remember all rules, forms and dates are on the website. ANNUAL CHURCH PAINTING COMPETITION The competition is sponsored by The Bald Eagle Art League and the Sun-Gazette and is open to all 2015 current members of the Bald Eagle Art League. A cash prize is awarded by the Sun-Gazette to the artist and the winning entry will be reproduced as the front page of the Christmas edition of the newspaper along with a write-up about the artist. Subject: An original work depicting any church in the circulation area of the Sun- Gazette, which has not been the winning subject in the last 10 years. No previously winning work of art will be eligible. Works that have not won in the past may be reentered. The circulation area of the Sun-Gazette is all of Lycoming, Tioga, Clinton, and Sullivan counties as well as the Milton/Lewisburg corridor including Watsontown and Turbotville.
