9 PART Four project directions euromuseum Objective: Compile a collection of Western Art for a museum, which covers the four main periods of Western Art: Renaissance, Baroque & Rococo, 19th Century and Modern In a consortium of up to five members, you must seek out, bid on and pay for examples of Western Art for a permanent collection. There are four auction sessions for this project for this year. You will become a curator for your proposed museum. Each curator will be granted $60,000,000 to secure and exhibit these works of art. Art works will be obtained through the official Euro Auction. The final museum collection must include representative works from four periods of Western Art: Renaissance Art, Baroque and Rococo, Art of the 19th Century, and Modern Art. 53 Starting the Project: Create and sign a contract following rules Contract is approved by EuroMuseum Design a logo for the Consortium Receive grant money Receive Auction Prospectus Bid when auction opens!

10 Creating the consortium Exhibition Products: In order to create a consortium, you must draw up a contract. The contract must include: names of the consortium members the name of the consortium the name of the museum, and the location of the museum. Each curator will serve as a member of the museum board. In addition to the above information, the contract should include information about the: acquisition process (e.g., unanimous, simple majority), assignment of consortium responsibilities (see right for suggestions), the procedure for dissolution of consortium or separation of a curator member (e.g., redistribution of money, disposition of art works) Suggested Job Titles: (This is a suggested list and may be modified) Coordinator of Finances: ledger recorder, check writer, budget creator, bidder Coordinator of Records: maintains pictures, maintains research information, files and maintains all official records Coordinator of Research: coordinates and assigns research for art works and artists, helps coordinate purchase priorities Coordinator of Design: oversees layout of museum, coordinates production of architectural drawings Coordinator of Publications: oversees consistency of publications, coordinates publication responsibilities Obtaining Works of Art: There will be four auctions: Renaissance Art, Baroque and Rococo, Art of the 19th Century, and Modern Art. There is only one grant of money. Each museum group will receive a list of art works available for bidding for each of the four auctions. For an auction, bids must be placed on the official bid form. The form must include the name of the art work, artist name, bid and maximum bid. Bids must be alphabetized by artist before being handed in to the auction house. A list of current bids will be placed on the web and be available in class. Auctions will run an average of five days. Auctions will always end at 2:50p.m. on the designated day. Art pieces will be distributed to the winning consortium. It is the responsibility of the museum to hold on to the approved works of art. Several items will be produced for this museum project. You will create a floor plan for the exhibit space. Each period of art must be assigned at least one room. The maximum footprint of the architectural drawing may not exceed 24 x 24. (The scale for the model is 1 = 2 feet.) create a brochure for each exhibit theme (e.g., Baroque and Rococo). Each brochure must include representative samples of the works of art, names of artists, and carry a brief description of the significance of the art works shown in the brochure. create an exhibition publication. This publication will serve as a souvenir and an educational resource. The publication will include: a written introduction from each curator explaining the rationale of the exhibit choices; a representation of each work of art purchased that includes size, medium, year, and artist; for each work, there must be a paragraph which includes, a description of interesting aspects of the picture, noteworthy developments, achievements or effects of the artwork, a section that includes brief biographies of the artists. Exhibition Date: The exhibition will open in early June, Grading: The project grade will be based on the architectural drawings, brochure, exhibit publication and any other materials generated by the group. The level of research, development of rationale and production of materials will be examined. Both a group and an individual grade will be assigned. This grade will be part of the fourth marking period grade. 54
