Trevor Haddrell Born in South Yorkshire and trained at Bath Academy of Art. Painter/Printmaker Head of Art, then Head of Art & Design in Bristol schools Taught many aspects of the subject and in the last ten years of his career developed an enthusiasm for relief printing. From 2000 he became a professional artist to explore this passion further. His favourite themes include cityscapes of UK and foreign cities, rooftop views and panoramas; natural forms including monumental studies of flowers, fruits and vegetables; a growing series of intimate cat studies; and purely abstract work. In addition to his black and white techniques with lino-cuts and wood engraving, Trevor works in pen and ink, watercolour, pastel and acrylic. His work is held in permanent public collections at the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery and the Theatre Collection at Bristol University, and has been published in various books of engravings. About Georgina graduated from the Bristol School of Art (2006). She has since worked as a freelance illustrator producing editorial and publishing commissions for various clients. Recent clients include M&S, Tesco, New York Times, Gatwick Airport, Friends of the Earth, and Saatchi & Saatchi. Angie Lewin Angie Lewin studied BA(Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design between 1983 and 1986, followed by a year s part-time postgraduate printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. After working in London as an illustrator she studied horticulture and a move to Norfolk prompted a return to printmaking. Inspired by both the clifftops and saltmarshes of the North Norfolk coast and the Scottish Highlands, she depicts these contrasting environments and their native flora in wood engraving, linocut, silkscreen, lithograph and collage. These landscapes are often glimpsed through intricately detailed plant forms. She is attracted to the relationships between plant communities on an intricate level, even the fine lines of insect eggs on a flower bud are observed in her work. Her Still life work often incorporates seedpods, grasses, flints and dried seaweed collected on walking and sketching trips.

2 Drawing What is Drawing? - A picture or diagram made with a pencil, pen, or crayon rather than paint. Line - A mark formed by drawing Horizontal lines run parallel such as === Vertical lines run up and down such as Diagonal lines are slanting lines such as \\\\\ Angled lines are a combination of diagonal lines such as /\/\/\/\/ ><<> Curved lines are curly and express movement such as ~~~~~ Sketch A quick drawing Hard pressure Pressing down hard to produce a dark line Soft Pressure Pressing down softly to produce a light line Shading Using a mixture of black mixed with a colour to make it darker. The opposite of shade is tint. Tone The quality of brightness, deepness or hue of a colour Highlight Small areas on a painting or drawing on which reflected light is the brightest. Pencils What are pencils?- An instrument for writing or drawing, consisting of a thin stick of graphite or a similar substance enclosed in a long thin piece of wood. Pencil Gradient- ranging from a very hard, light-marking pencil to a very soft, black-marking pencil usually ranges from hardest to softest as follows: 9H 8H 7H 6H 5H 4H 3H 2H H F HB B 2B 3B 4B 5B 6B 7B 8B 9B Hardest Medium Softest Graphite Pencils- Are solid sticks of graphite, about the diameter of a common pencil, which have no casing. Coloured pencils-(or pencil crayons) These have wax-like cores with pigment and other fillers. Multiple colours are often blended together. Grease pencils- They write on virtually any surface (including glass, plastic, metal and photographs). Watercolour pencils -These are designed for use with watercolour techniques. The pencils can be used by themselves for sharp, bold lines. Strokes made by the pencil can also be saturated with water and spread with brushes. Charcoal What is Charcoal? - A black substance typically made from burnt wood. It is a soft, brittle material in stick or pencil form used for sketching and drawing, Charcoal is rich and crumbly, and smudges easily Charcoal stick- A stick often made from Willow: it is long, cylindrical and wiggly. Compressed Charcoal- Powdered down charcoal which is compressed into a square mould. It produces deep, dense tones with a completely different texture from charcoal stick. Charcoal Pencils Pencils with charcoal instead of graphite, they have more control and are less messy to use. Smudging- Make or become blurred or smeared by using your finger or a smudging tool(for example a rubber) Putty rubber- A tool for artists made of a grey or white pliable material. They can be shaped by hand for precision(small areas) erasing, creating highlights, or creating mark making. Fixative- A liquid which is sprayed over a finished piece of artwork to preserve it and stop it smudging. 3 Painting What is painting?-the process or art of using paint, either in a picture or as decoration Colour Wash-A watered down solution of paint that you use to add a colour or tint to a paper. You can use a large brush or a sponge. Dry Brushing-A painting technique in which a paint brush that is relatively dry, but still holds paint. Wet on Wet-A painting technique, used mostly in oil painting, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint. Blending-Painting colours so that there is a gentle and gradual transition from one to the other. Stippling-A technique where you cover an area with dots. Impasto-A manner of painting where the paint is laid on thickly so texture stands out in relief. Colour Bleed-When one wet colour runs into another causing blurring Palette-A thin board or slab on which an artist lays and mixes colours. Palette Knife-A palette knife is a blunt tool used for mixing or applying paint Easel-A self-supporting frame for holding an artist's work while it is being painted or drawn. Colour Schemes Secondary colours Primary colours If you mix equal amounts of the primary colours, you get the Secondary colours - Purple, Green and Orange. Red + Yellow = Orange Red + Blue = Purple Blue + Yellow = Green Harmonious colours are from the same area of the colour spectrum Red + Yellow=Orange Blue + Yellow=Green Red + Blue=Purple Primary colours are the three key colours - Red, Blue and Yellow. They cannot be made from any other colour. Complimentary Colours are from opposite sides of the colour spectrum Tertiary colours are a made from a primary and secondary colour mixed together Colour Primary Colours- Primary colours are the three key colours- Red, Blue and Yellow. They cannot be made from any other colour. Secondary Colours Secondary colours are made using primary colours. If you mix equal amounts of the primary colours, you get the Secondary colours - Purple, Green and Orange. Tertiary Colours Colours made mixing all the primary colours together or all the secondary colours together or colours mixed using complimentary colours, Red and Green. Blue and Orange or Yellow and Purple Colour Schemes Complimentary Colours - Complimentary Colours are from opposite sides of the colour spectrum. Blue and Orange, Red and green and Yellow and Purple Harmonious Colours Harmonious colours are from The same section of the colour wheel. Yellow, Orange and Red Monochrome Using just one colour to make light and dark tones

4 Printing Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that has lines or images that can only be made once, unlike most printmaking, where there are multiple originals. There are many techniques of monoprinting. Examples of standard printmaking techniques which can be used to make monoprints include lithography, woodcut, and etching. Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface. Screen whereby printing is a printing technique a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. Collagraphy (sometimes spelled collography) is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate (such as paperboard or wood). The word is derived from the Greek word koll or kolla, meaning glue, and graph, meaning the activity of drawing. Devoré (also called burnout) is a fabric technique particularly used on velvets, where a mixed-fibre material undergoes a chemical process to dissolve the cellulose fibersto create a semi-transparent pattern against more solidly woven fabric. The same technique can also be applied to textiles other than velvet, such as lace or the fabrics in burnout t-shirts. [1] Devoré comes from the French verb dévorer, meaning literally to devour. 5 Ceramics - Pinch Pots What is a pinch pot? - A pinch pot is a simple bowl made by pinching the clay into shape. It is one of the first methods people used to make pottery. KEY WORDS Terra cotta A red clay meaning baked earth in Latin. Stoneware clay - Sturdier then earthenware, stoneware is waterproof even without being glazed. Manipulation - The action of touching with the hands or the skilful use of the hands Embellishment - The act of adding decorations to something Green ware When the pot is in the drying out process Bisque ware After the pot has been biscuit fired at 1000 degrees Glazed After the pot has been glazed and fired between degrees Ceramics - Embellishment What is Embellishment - The act of adding decorations to something KEY WORDS Imprint - A print in a surface produced by pressing Relief Projecting from a flat surface Moulding - Sculpture produced by manipulation (using your finger or hands to move clay to where you want it) Mark making Using a tool to imprint decorative marks (for example a line using a pencil to draw) Decorating slip Using a slip(wet coloured clay) to decorate green ware Pattern Cut To cut out a pattern using a clay tool or scalpel
