2 Terms 3-Dimensional, 2-Dimensional, Shape Value- The lightness or darkness of a plane or ara Space- the distance between identifiable points or planes Perspective-the creation of the illusion of depth in a 2-d image by using mathematical principles Style- Characteristic way in which an artist uses visual language to give a work an identifiable form of visual expression Plane-a flat surface, often implied in the composition Highlight-an area of lightest value in a work Emphasis-the principle of drawing attention to particular content in a work Hatching- the use of non overlapping parallel lines to convey darkness or lightness Cross hatching- the use of crossing sets of parallel lines to convey darkness or lightness Relative placement- the arrangement of shapes or lines to form a visual relationship to each other in a design Foreground-closest to viewer Background-furthest from viewer Middleground-area between Rhythm- the regular or ordered repetition of elements in the work Intensity- the relative clarity of color in its purest form, demonstrated thru luminous or muted varations Atmospheric perspective-use of color and clarity to create the illusion of depth. Closer objects have warmer tones and clear outlines, while object set further away are cooler and hazy. Isometric perspective- system using diagonal parallel lines to communicate depth Linear perspective- a system of using conversing imaginary sight lines to create illusion of depth Actual line- continuous uninterrupted line Implied line- a line not actually drawn but suggest by elements in the work Vanishing point- the point in a work of art that imaginary sight lines appear to converge, suggesting depth Orthogonals- in perspective systems, imaginary sight lines extending from forms to the vanishing point Fresco-a technique where the artist paints on applied plaster, Fresco Secco, or Buon Fresco. Foreshortening- a perspective technique that depict a form at a very dramatic angle to the viewer in order to show depth in space

Size overlapping and position- the size of one shape compared to another suggests the larger object is closer Overlapping shapes also is a tool used. 15 Atmospheric Perspective Atmospheric perspective- the haziness of the atmosphere creates depth. Because we are looking through a volume of various molecules and atoms, things closer to us are sharper and things farther away are hazy and blurry, losing sharpness and contrast.
