Implied Depth: Value & Space

Terms 3-Dimensional, 2-Dimensional, Shape Value- The lightness or darkness of a plane or ara Space- the distance between identifiable points or planes Perspective-the creation of the illusion of depth in a 2-d image by using mathematical principles Style- Characteristic way in which an artist uses visual language to give a work an identifiable form of visual expression Plane-a flat surface, often implied in the composition Highlight-an area of lightest value in a work Emphasis-the principle of drawing attention to particular content in a work Hatching- the use of non overlapping parallel lines to convey darkness or lightness Cross hatching- the use of crossing sets of parallel lines to convey darkness or lightness Relative placement- the arrangement of shapes or lines to form a visual relationship to each other in a design Foreground-closest to viewer Background-furthest from viewer Middleground-area between Rhythm- the regular or ordered repetition of elements in the work Intensity- the relative clarity of color in its purest form, demonstrated thru luminous or muted varations Atmospheric perspective-use of color and clarity to create the illusion of depth. Closer objects have warmer tones and clear outlines, while object set further away are cooler and hazy. Isometric perspective- system using diagonal parallel lines to communicate depth Linear perspective- a system of using conversing imaginary sight lines to create illusion of depth Actual line- continuous uninterrupted line Implied line- a line not actually drawn but suggest by elements in the work Vanishing point- the point in a work of art that imaginary sight lines appear to converge, suggesting depth Orthogonals- in perspective systems, imaginary sight lines extending from forms to the vanishing point Fresco-a technique where the artist paints on applied plaster, Fresco Secco, or Buon Fresco. Foreshortening- a perspective technique that depict a form at a very dramatic angle to the viewer in order to show depth in space

Terms cont. In the round Freestanding work that can be viewed from all sides Facade Any side of a building Foreground Part nearest to viewer High Relief A carved panel where the figures project with a great deal of depth from the background Bas-Relief Sculpture carved with very little depth Steele Upright stone slab decorated with inscriptions or pictorial relief carvings Composition Overall design or organization of a work Focal Point Center of interest in a work often drawing the viewer to the most important elements Axis Imaginary line showing the center of a shape volume or composition

Value Value refers to lightness and darkness, the use of value can produce solidity, depth, and mood. Film Noir- is a film convention that uses low key lighting to depict mood, seediness, and deep cynicism. Has its roots in German Expressionism films from Terry Gilliam s Brazil Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu, an adaptation of Dracula. An example of German expressionism of the WW s period of Germany 4, Chinatown, Roman Polanski,

Has its roots in German Expressionism films Fill Flash in photography by contrast has a visual effect of making clear, crystallizing a moment in time. Bruce Gilden Street Photography

Value Value refers to lightness and darkness, the use of value can produce solidity, depth, and mood. The geodesic dome is demonstrates the ability of light to bend and reflect around the shape, showing degrees of value from shadow to highlight.

Chiaroscuro Chiaroscuro-Italian for light-dark. Is a method of applying value to a 2-D artwork to create the illusion of 3-D solid form Chiaroscuro light-dark technique video Image: Caravaggio, The Incredulity of Saint Thomas, 1603.

Hatching and Cross Hatching Hatching- use of non overlapping lines to convey lightness or darkness Cross Hatching- use of overlapping lines to convey lightness or darkness Michelangelo- Head of a satyr 1520, ink on paper.

Space A variety of techniques are used to create a sense of depth and the illusion of space in a work of art. Size overlapping and position- the size of one shape compared to another suggests the larger object is closer Overlapping shapes also is a tool used. Positioning of objects in picture plane is another tool. Eduard Manet, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1882.

Brightness and Color Brightness and color can be used to suggest depth, Lighter areas seem to be closer and dark areas appear to recede. Thomas Hart Benton was an American Great Depression era painter who employed saturation, dark and lightness to achieve great effects in his paintings that called attention to race and class struggles in the wake of the Depression/WWII era.

Atmospheric Perspective Atmospheric perspective- the haziness of the atmosphere creates depth. Because we are looking through a volume of various molecules and atoms, things closer to us are sharper and things farther away are hazy and blurry, losing sharpness and contrast.

Isometric perspective Isometric perspective arranges parallel lines diagonally in a work to give a sense of depth, deriving from greek, meaning equal measure. Developed in China 1500 years ago
