1 Art History I Fall 2015 Description: This semester-length course is the first half of a year-long survey of Art History. Either this course, or the second half, Art History II, may be taken in fulfillment of the Art History requirement in the Arts/Music/Technology discipline. Using a geographical and chronological approach, Art History I examines the major forms of human artistic expression architecture, ceramics, jewelry, painting, sculpture, textiles, as well as other handicrafts as cultural artifacts: creations of a particular people in a particular time and place, from the Paleolithic to the Baroque Era. We will use a combination of textbook reading selections, slides, films, and museum visits to: place ourselves within the context and culture that gave rise to a particular work of art; look at works of art critically, evaluating and discussing form, function, and techniques; and, make connections between artworks of the same periods/cultures as well to works of other periods and cultures. Assessments could include: individual architectural photos and photo essays; graphic organizers; time-lines; written responses; flashcards; oral presentations on eras and/or artists; museum visitation sheets; and, curatorial projects--selecting a work of art and sharing with the class such issues as methods, materials, patronage, sociopolitical situations, and the functions and effects of art in history, culture, and society. Objectives: At the end of the semester, the successful student will be able to: Develop visual literacy skills using art terminology to analyze and describe the visual properties of a work of art or architectural style; Apply art history methods to his/her visual environment to create an understanding of how images encode social ideologies to promote cultural attitudes towards families, religious beliefs, governments, etc.; Analyze works of art/architecture, relating the works to their cultural and historical origins and synthesizing knowledge about those cultures based on the works analyzed; Recognize common characteristics among diverse artworks based on material, methods, periods, styles, and themes; Identify distinguishing features of structural units of architecture, such as the column, vault, rib, and the buttress, and the variations within these units; Characterize major innovations in art/architecture and identify artists/architects associated with these innovations; Build a personal canon of western images and architecture based on personal preferences as well as technical achievements; Select a work of art/architecture and curate that work for a general audience; and, 1

9 Points for any proposed assignments which end up unassigned will be added to the Minor Assignments category. Policies and Recommendations Participation is based on the 4 points per day that you are given for attending class. I will subtract from those 4 points one point for each of the following: 1. Arriving late to class for any reason; 2. Not bringing your textbook(s), a notebook, and a pen/pencil; 3. Leaving class for any reason (empty/fill whatever you need to empty/fill before arriving to class); and, 4. Disruptive or disrespectful behavior after having been notified of such. Serious disruptions will lead to a loss of more points or removal from class. Just because we are in a darkened room looking at slides or film, this is NOT nap time! Your head does NOT belong on the desk, and if it IS there, you will lose your participation points for the class day. A copy of the syllabus is posted on Jupiter and on my website. If I need to make a change in an assigned due date [ALWAYS later than the original date, I will make that clear in Jupiter, and I will probably note that in the weekly update on my website. Assignments are due on the date listed. I deduct five points a day [school days and weekends/holidays] for every day an assignment is late. So please be prepared to turn your work in on time! All assignments for this class have specific requirements as to media [PowerPoint, written response, etc.], and I expect you to complete the assignment following those requirements. When you have a presentation assigned, you need to be certain that your technology components work If you experience a crash, and you do not have a backup, you may not be able to present on time, and that means that you will be penalized five points a day until you ARE able to present, so be proactive and PREPARED for the worst too often the worst DOES seem to happen! You may have a beverage in class, but YOU are responsible for cleaning up any spills, Unless we have specifically planned it, food/eating is not allowed. You may chew gum; however, if I find gum on the undersides of tables or on the carpet, or any place other than in your mouth or in the trash, I will reconsider this policy. No cell phones, ipods, MP3s, etc should be used in class; it s hard to learn anything when you are engaged elsewhere. These go in the basket on the file cabinet as you enter class. 9

10 Yes, I am old-fashioned. NO HATS, NO HOODIES UP, and NO SUNGLASSES are to be worn in class and, of course, no crack should be displayed [either from young ladies or young men], and no under wear should be seen as outer wear. Please pick up after yourself and push in your chair when leaving class; I am neither your maid nor your mother. I am not responsible for any items you leave behind although I will do my best to make sure that your things are not lost. However, I have classes all day, and others will need the table/floor space, so please try not to leave anything! I take attendance at the beginning of class. As per school policy, three tardy arrivals will be considered one absence, and five absences per quarter will result in a technical failure for the class. [Please note: absences are not automatically considered excused, even with a note.] If you exceed the number of absences allowed per quarter, you will need to file an attendance waiver request with the Head of School who will determine whether or not your absences should be excused. I look forward to a great semester with you! Teacher Barb :) tbarb@friends-school.org 10
