Help Listen / Read the news story below and choose the correct word from the box A: gambling C: existence E: purchased G: speculation I: incredible B: predictions D: speculation F: smashed H: dismissed J: specialist 318 One Used Painting How Much??? 1 The art world is still reeling from the astronomical fee that has 1: the world record for the most expensive painting ever sold. For the first time in history the price of a single painting went past 300m or $450m. Salvator Mundi, or Saviour of the World in English, painted by the Italian Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci reached that 2: price when it was sold on November 17 th at Christie s Auction House in New York. 2 The reason the painting reached the eye-watering figure of 340.7m is that it is one of less than 20 artworks painted by da Vinci still in 3:. The picture of a serene-looking Jesus Christ wearing a blue outfit and holding an orb in his left hand was not expected to break the world record. In fact 4: before the auction started was that the painting would sell for around 91m. 3 However, Thomas Campbell former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York explained that whilst the paintings fee was incredible it wasn t a big shock. The price was eye-popping, but it should come as no surprise in a market where 5: and branding have displaced common-sense. Mr Campbell went on to add that the price was also the result of someone who is 6: that the painting will attract people the same way as the Mona Lisa in Paris does. 4 What is even more amazing than the painting s fee is that some art historians are still not convinced that it is a genuine Leonardo da Vinci painting. Jacques Franck, a Paris-based art historian and da Vinci 7: who has examined the painting multiple times has 8: any claims that it is a Leonardo painting. The composition doesn t come from Leonardo. It s a good studio work with a little Leonardo at best explained Mr. Franck. 5 Added to the incredible story of the Salvator Mundi, believed to have been painted around 1500 by da Vinci, is that in 1958 it was sold for just 45! Even 12 years ago in 2005 the painting only cost 7,500 when it was 9: by New York art dealer Alexander Parish. The new owners of the painting have not been revealed, but 10: is that it might be the stunning new Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum in the UA.E. Whoever it is, 340.7m is a long, long way from 45!
