1 PPG PMC GENERAL WORKING PROCEDURE SigmaShield 1200 Application Guide This Document has been prepared to the best of our knowledge in order to ensure good workmanship. However, the responsibility for executing the work stays with the contractor. The role of our Technical Service Representative is to provide onsite technical assistance and advice. INTRODUCTION This WORKING PROCEDURE is recommended as a practical tool and guidance in order to assist the applicators in applying the specified coating system in accordance with the technical recommendations and specified standards. All coating work must be performed in accordance with the contractual specification, PPG technical data sheets and recommended working procedures. SigmaShield 1200 is a two component, abrasion resistant epoxy coating suitable for high impact and abrasion areas on ship hulls and other structures. (Please refer to the latest PPG S System & Product Data Sheets for further information) II. PRECAUTIONS It is important that the product be applied over surfaces prepared in accordance with the instructions presented in the product data sheet. Environmental conditions stated in the product data sheet must also be met. III. APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR SINGLE FEED AIRLESS SPRAY 1) Good working order, minimum 60/1 Airless pump. 2) Use new ; < 100 ½ fluid line /8 whip, + high capacity spray gun (.021 tip typically). Fluid lines should be insulated to stabilize material temps in cold and hot weather. 3) In advance of mixing: Warm or cool and stabilize the material temperature at 68-75F. Stage material as near to the pump station as practical. Note: Material viscosity is adjusted via temperature..do not thin. 4) Mix Sigmashield 1200 for 4-5 minutes at medium speed (not high speed!). There is no Induction time. 5) Following mixing immediately start feeding the mixed material down the line. Note: Mixed material will increasingly warm up after mixing. Due to this warming of the material the material typically will reach F at the spray gun which allows for good spray characteristics. FTS / WP I FTS12.SG (M&R / FR) Ref.: Page of 5

4 6) Proceed with mixing one unit at a time and feed down the line. Do not mix more material than can be used soon after mixing. 7) Regardless of how well the material is spraying, typically, after 50 gallons are used, stop and flush the 1200 completely out of the pump and line! Use T-10 Thinner. 8) During spraying use temperature sensing laser guns to measure (keep tabs) on material temp from the pump to the spray gun. If the material gets much over 100 F at the tip the pot life is about to close and flushing of the material should take place. 9) If the material starts to spit, stop and flush the lines immediately! Also the lower ball may need to be dropped and cleaned out. 10) Remove the pump and gun filters. 11) Spray the product with overlapping spray patterns to achieve the target wet film thickness. IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR PLURAL COMPONENT SPRAY 1) Good working order minimum 60::1 pump. 2) From the mixing block use: New, < 100 ½ fluid line /8 whip, + high capacity spray gun (.021 tip typically). Remove the pump and gun filters. 3) Minimize the influence of air and or deck surface temperatures to the fluid lines by insulating the fluid lines. 4) Most importantly and well be before getting started warm/ cool and stabilize the material temperature at 68-75F. Note: Material viscosity is adjusted via temperature..do not thin. 5) Feed the material down the fluid line. At the mixing block, warm Sigmashield 1200 to 80F and trigger spray application continuously to move material continuously down the line. Pot life at 80F is approximately 30 minutes. 5 Note: Mixed material will increasingly warm up after mixing. During this warming the material typically will reach F at the spray gun which allows for good spray characteristics. 6) Recommendation: During spraying, use temperature sensing laser guns to measure (keep tabs) of the material temp from the mixing block to the spray gun. If the material gets much over 100F at the spray gun the material could be about to close and flushing of the material May need to take place. 7) If the material starts to spit, stop and flush the lines immediately with T-10 thinner and resume with the above procedure.
