2 Biography! Yazan Halwani was born in Beirut in 1993, 3 years a7er the end of the Lebanese Civil War. In 2007, he made his first contact with street art by tagging walls in Beirut inspired by the US and European graffim scene. In search of an idenmty within a city that has difficulmes defining its own cultural idenmty due to sectarianism, lack of cultural infrastructure and remnants of the war, Yazan shi7ed his murals towards an open expression of Arabic culture that manifests itself in the streets through the use of calligraphy, geometry and portraits. In his process, Yazan tries to create murals that grow with the city not against it by considering the context around the wall: people, history and city. Yazan s work tries to reinvent Arabic calligraphy and make it more universal. Most of the Mme, he removes the meaning of words to preserve shape only and infuses meaning by making calligraphic composimons where the levers become pixels of a face, a tool for musical notamon, or express movement. As a calligrapher, Yazan says that tradimonal Arabic calligraphy is highly associated with the meaning of the Arabic sentence it writes, whereas the calligrapher s work should be revolving around the shape, stroke and visual meaning. By breaking away from the meaning of the word, Yazan makes calligraphy understood to everyone. Yazan has painted and exhibited his work in Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Tunisia, Singapore and the USA.
