1 My work revolves around the sisal fibre. Its hidden richness inspires me to highlight its unexplored visual potential by creating a work of art. I focus on stripping the fibre of its common connotation of wrapping string and rehabilitate it to its original beauty. Contemplating this raw material in all the aesthetic qualities it offers, allows me to divert it from its useful role and replace it in its existential reality the never ending transformation of matter. In keeping with the organic process of nature, in my works I convey this through the process of doing and undoing, of winding and unwinding the fibre so as to allow it to reveal its inner ever changing nature. The challenge for me is to produce a woven piece of work using sisal string without the loom, and yet follow the vertical and horizontal movement inherent in the warp and the weft thread found in traditional weaving. The process of this craft nurtures my imagination and urges me to bring it to the foreground by a bold and open weft. Here the woven result is not an illustrated surface but fullness of shape and movement of its own. But mostly what I like to bring out in my works is an openness by giving it breathing spaces. The loosening of the weft has led me to explore and juxtapose the full spaces with the empty spaces, and simultaneously questioning their role. As I gaze at these empty spaces I find my subjective vision filling them out with the changing light of the surroundings. At the same time, alternating between fibre and string creates a compelling visual impact by the coarseness of the string and the gentleness of the fibre. I don t hesitate to elaborate these opposing and yet complementary aspects because it gives me a sense of closeness to nature. Andie Grande
