1 Williamsville C.U.S.D. #15 Fine Arts Curriculum Program Title: Eighth Grade Art II Program Description: This one-semester elective course is open to 8 th grade students. It builds upon and applies the learning experiences in Art I. Art II students will develop a greater understanding of art styles and cultures, as well as methods of creating through their own ideas and art work. Students will have the opportunity to develop individual projects and complete independent studies. L. Understand the sensory elements, organizational principles and expressive qualities of the arts. 1. Identify the elements of line shape, space, color and texture; understand the principles of repetition and pattern and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representation. 2. Identify similarities in and among the arts such as pattern, sequence, harmony, and emphasis.

Understand the relationships in figure ground, value and form and the effect on the final work. 5. Utilize the principles of rhythm, size, repetition, composition and emphasis in creating and analyzing works of art. 6. Understand and incorporate the expressive qualities on symbol and story in student work. 7. Analyze how the elements and principles can be organized to convey meaning through a variety of media and technology. M. Understand the similarities, distinctions, and connections in and among the arts. 1. Develop an understanding of how the elements and principles of art combine with an art form to express ideas. 2. Identify similarities in and among the different art forms such as repetition, pattern, mood, expression, and communication. 3. Compare and contrast the elements and principles in two or more art works that share similar themes. State Goal 26: Through creating and performing, understand how works of art are produced. A. Understand processes, traditional tools, and modern technologies used in the arts. 1. Identify different media and tools and how to use them in a safe and responsible manner when creating works of art. This knowledge includes painting, drawing and constructing of 3 dimensional works. 2. Understand the artistic processes of printmaking, weaving, sculpture and photographic imagery such as photography or computer generated images. 3. Describe how the choices of tools/technologies and processes are used to create specific effects in the arts. B. Apply skills and knowledge necessary to create and perform in one or more of the arts. 1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create visual works of art using manipulation, eye-hand coordination, building and imagination. 2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing. 3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create 2 and 3 dimensional works and arts such as videos or films, that are realistic, abstract, functional and decorative. State Goal 27: Understand the role of the arts in civilizations, past and present. A. Analyze how the arts function in history, society, and everyday life. 1. Identify the distinctive roles of artists and audiences. 2. Identify how the arts contribute to communication, celebrations, occupations
