Has this year moved fast for you? It sure has for me. Of course, adding a queen size quilt for my daughter s birthday helped to increase by busyness. It was worth it though when she loved the end result. I made my first truly scrappy quilt of black and beiges. Lots of changes these last two months. I m glad the Bonnie Hunter class is settled and thank those of you who decided you could reschedule and take the class December 7. Programs have tried to not have two big names back to back but with the fires and such and having to reschedule the September class, we have another class coming up right after the first of the year. Violet Craft will be here January 10. I know that s quick after Bonnie s class but I hope you will sign up and be supportive. We have decided to have it at the Winston Community Center as well, to give more of you an opportunity to take Violet's class. As with Bonnie, Violet, too, has indicated you may choose your pattern if you do not wish to do the one selected. Apologies too, for those of you who were looking forward to a more casual day meeting last month. We really did plan to have a time of visiting and playing a few games. We even had (have) prizes. Hopefully another time. Even though 2 hours seems a long time to sit through a meeting, there is a lot to accomplish in that time. Thank you Corrine W. for your presentation. If you didn t thank her, please do, she worked really hard on this and worried even more, I think. And the show and share. WOW! You ladies do beautiful work. The minutes from the meeting tell me we actually started the meeting at 11:25. Thank you all for being patient as we got through the announcements and updates. Inspiration: I am in love with the colors of fall. Everywhere you look. Colors! The drive to my house along the river is beautiful. Oranges, greens, browns, blues, yellows, reds, violets and all the colors in-between. I hope you re all getting lots of ideas. Please remember the Stitch and Sew Emporium over the next two months. Due to how the holidays fall we don t have a sew day for 1

2 Pins and Needles from the President (continued) November and December. If you have an idea, let your friends know and maybe get together and sew some things for the Emporium. Remember it s one of the guild's fund raisers. The refreshments for November are to be provided by: O R including kitchen cleanup. Please wipe down the counters and throw away any leftover food. The Fat Quarter and the Let s Color Together Color for November is Orange You Glad? Working together on our Friendship Quilt Donna FROM THE EVENING CHAIR Isn t it wonderful to walk outside and feel the chill of Fall in the air? October is wrapping up three months of what feels like constant travel for us. We re just back from Vancouver Island, and felt the full force of the changing season. We were even without electricity for several hours after high winds. It was OK, the local quilt shop still had power. We are privileged again this month to present a Quilt of Valor to another veteran at our next evening meeting. What an honor to show appreciation for their service and sacrifice. It will also be great to see what you all have been putting together. Our charity quilt squares are due this month. The ones already returned are fantastic, and I can t wait to see the rest. We might even have enough for two children s quilts! I know you re also working on your potholders and brown bag challenge projects for our December potluck meeting. Whew! There s a lot going on. Don t forget to take a minute to put your feet up and relax once in a while, too. Myrt Thames Evening Chair DESIGN A BLOCK Set up occurred on Friday, Oct 20. Thanks to Donna Scully for bringing all the equipment from our Storage Unit. Also to Phyllis Coble, Cindi Rich, Vicki Johnston, Joann Andersen and myself setting up the tables, curtains, etc. Our sewing crew this weekend consisted of Nan Sieck, Joann Andersen, Linda Witbeck, Carol Evenson, Helen Belk, Teri Gregg, Donna LeGat, Kath Scarantino, Trudy White, Pat Patton, Debbie Hogg, Glenda Zalunardo, Sue Wood, Lynn Starr, and myself. Thank you, ladies. We couldn't have done it without you!!! There were 148 blocks made, mostly by the sewing crew. The public participation was very small. I'd say about 20 people, attending the antique fair, made blocks. The crew designed and sewed the rest. They were busy, busy.!!! I'm sure the weather had a lot to do with it, because the entire event was very slow. I know our ladies would have preferred to be home, nice and warm, sewing on their projects. But, nevertheless, a good time was had by all. Smiles and laughter all around. The blocks made this weekend will be put into kits of 9 blocks each. Joan Stevens will coordinate sashing and backing and return them to the guild for completion of the tops, and/or the entire quilt. We will be asking that you sign the quilt kit out, and return in as requested on the sign-out sheet. Our next Design A Block event will be the Quilt Show in April. 3 Orange You Glad LET S COLOR TOGETHER! A marvelous color is orange. A little goes a long way. A Google search reveals that orange is optimistic and uplifting, perhaps extroverted and a show off. Orange is associated with joy, warmth, creativity, and change. When I was starting to quilt, I browsed the quilt magazines. I soon learned that whenever I was drawn to a quilt or design, it included blue and orange. I still consider blue and orange a single color. The orange draws the eye and quickens the heart. It adds excitement and enjoyment. Flowers and sunsets are enhanced with a little orange, as is a quilt. What could be better than a little orange with blue? Rowena Bellando QOV/Patriotic Quilt At our November evening meeting we will be honored to award a Quilt of Valor to Retired Special Forces Operator, First Sergeant Wade Christensen. First Sergeant Christensen served 23 years and 2 months with 6 combat deployments, June 1993 to August Please join us in thanking First Sergeant Christensen for his service and sacrifice. 3

And, ladies, it s not as stripy as it sounds. Bring an assortment of Fabric Strips, 2 ½ by WOF and have fun swapping them with friends. I have to say the first time I played this I didn t have enough strips and had to borrow some, so bring a bundle to swap. The Day meeting will be playing Quilt Bingo and there are prizes. 4

5 PROGRAMS Well it looks like we are now rolling right into the fall/winter weather that means there s more time to stay inside and sew we have some great things coming up so don t miss out November Shirley Pyle will be sharing her beautiful quilts with us at both the day and evening meetings I m sure it will be a beautiful trunk show. I love it when our own members are willing to show off their quilts. December No speakers are slated for this month it s all about CHRISTMAS PARTIES!!! But we do have the Bonnie Hunter workshop December 7 th at the Winston Community Center from 9:00am to 4:00pm. More info to follow for those that have signed up for the workshop. January We have the fabulous Violet Craft coming to the guild. Both the evening and day groups will be treated to a trunk show. January 10, 9:00am 4:00pm is her workshop in Winston at the Community Center. There will be more info for those that have signed up. Kathy Knapp Community Quilts: Community Quilts needs quilters for the many quilts that have been turned in. The ladies are working hard putting these quilts together and delivering them but need help and support in finishing them. If you are able to help please let Joan know. Thank you. 6 STITCH AND SEW EMPORIUM SEW DAYS Patti is off having fun on a very cool vacation so you are hearing from me. Actually without her permission. Hopefully she ll not care. (Smile) With the holidays being so close to our sew days we don t have a sew day in November or December but that doesn t mean we don t need things for the Stitch and Sew Emporium. Please be thinking about items you can make and donate. As you make that fun thing for a Christmas present, make one more for the Emporium. If you have an idea of an item someone would love to have, tell someone and get together over the next two months and have fun sewing something for our store. The Stitch and Sew Emporium is one of our fund raisers for the guild and we need each member's cooperation and contributions to make it a success. You are all so clever and talented I just know you ll come up with some really nice things. Potholders, anyone? An ornament? A small goody bag? Or a Large Tote?
